The effect of downstream resistance on flow diverter treatment of a cerebral aneurysm at a bifurcation: A joint computational-experimental study

Intracranial aneurysm can lead to hemorrhagic stroke upon rupture. Deployment of flow diverters can restrict the blood flow into aneurysm and mitigate the rupture risk. computational fluid dynamics（cFD） and ultrasonography with pulse-wave and color Doppler ultrasound measurements were employed jointly to investigate the complex flow pattern in cerebral aneurysms, both before and after the deployment of flow diverters. Patient-specific configurations of both bifurcation and side-wall aneurysms were selected. The effect of downstream flow resistance was investigated by adjusting the volume flow rate and pressure at the outlet vessels computationally and experimentally. Velocity profiles in the aneurysm measured from ultrasonography showed good agreement with those from computer simulations. The discrepancy in velocity between the computational and experimental sets of data is less than 10%. The downstream resistance can alter the volume flux into a bifurcation aneurysm with a flow diverter deployed by 236%, while the corresponding value of a side-wall aneurysm is negligible. The vorticity of the aneurysmal flow was reduced by more than 80% in both cases after stenting. This study demonstrated that careful investigation of downstream flow resistance of a bifurcation aneurysm is essential to provide an accurate assessment of the aneurysmal flow dynamics after flow diverter deployment.

The main objective of this paper is to review the chemical and genetic methods used in authentication of ginseng, especially the recent advances in microsatellite genotyping and its application to the authentication of other traditional chinese medicines (TcM). The standardization and modernization of TcM hinge on the authentication of their botanical identities. Analysis of well-characterized marker compounds is now the most popular method for identifying the herbal materials and quality.c.ntrol of TcM, eg, ginsenoside profiling for authentication of Panax species. However, in many herbal species the chemical composition of the plant changes with the external environment and processing conditions, which lowers the reliability of these authentication methods. In the light of the advances in molecular biotechnology in the past few decades, genetic tools are now considered to provide more standardized and reliable methods for authentication of herbal materials at the DNA level. Leptotrichia hongkongensis ***.,a novel Leptotrichia species with the oral cavity as its natural reservoir

A straight, non-sporulating, Gram-variable bacillus (HKU24T) was recovered from the blood culture of a patient with metastatic breast carcinoma. After repeated subculturing in BAcTEc Plus Anaerobic/F blood culture broth, HKU24T grew on brucella agar as non-hemolytic, pinpoint colonies after 96 h of incubation at 37 °c in an anaerobic environment and aerobic environment with 5% cO2. Growth was enhanced with a streak of Staphylococcus aureus. HKU24T was non-motile and catalase-negative, but positive for alkaline phosphatase, β-glucosidase, and α-glucosidase. It hydrolyzed phenylphosphonate and reduced resazurin. 16S rRNA, groEL, gyrB, recA, and rpoB sequencing showed that HKU24T occupies a distinct phylogenetic position among the Leptotrichia species, being most closely related to Leptotrichia trevisanii. Using HKU24T groEL, gyrB, recA, and rpoB gene-specific primers, fragments of these genes were amplified from one of 20 oral specimens. Based on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, we propose a new species, Leptotrichia hongkongensis sp. nov., to describe this bacterium.

Mechanoluminescence （ML） is the emission of light consecutive to a mechanical force or stress imposed to a crystalline material. Many inorganic and organic compounds present this phenomenon that is known for over 400 years. Lanthanide and uranyl salts were among the first substances investigated for this property. Mechanoluminescence, also referred to as triboluminescence, is often considered as being a badly understood phenomenon. In fact it is because of two main reasons. Firstly, a variety of different mechanical stresses, from simple rubbing, to applied pressure, crushing, impact of a weight, ultrasound, laser-generated shock wave, crystallization, dissolution of crystals, or even wind can trigger it. Secondly, ML is very sensitive to the purity and morphology of the sample： in inorganic compounds, generation of traps by doping ＂impurities＂（e.g. lanthanide ions） is responsible for light emission so that the exact composition of the sample has to be known to a very detailed level; for chelates, the crystallization conditions are crucial since they often generate extended networks of weak interactions that are instrumental in triggering ML when they are broken. In fact mechanisms of ML are relatively well known and theories and models often reproduce very well the experiments. Additionally, practical applications are at hand, for example stress, crack, and impact sensors based on SrAI204：Eu11 or Et3NH[Eu（dbm）4] are used to test structures and materials as diverse as road bridges, reinforced concrete elements, pressur- ized containers or airplane wings and to image the propagation of cracks or stress distribution. Military and security applications involve detecting the passage of vehicle or soldiers and producing counter- feiting inks while more joyful applications are luminous balls, wrapping papers and adhesive tapes. Quality of life after laparoscopic vs open sphincter-preserving resection for rectal cancer

AIM: To compare quality of life (QoL) outcomes in chinese patients after curative laparoscopic vs open surgery for rectal cancer. METHODS: Eligible chinese patients with rectal cancer undergoing curative laparoscopic or open sphincterpreserving resection between July 2006 and July 2008 were enrolled in this prospective study. The QoL outcomes were assessed longitudinally using the validated chinese versions of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of cancer QLQ-c30 and QLQcR38 questionnaires before surgery and at 4, 8, and 12 mo after surgery. The QoL scores at the different time points were compared between the laparoscopic and open groups. A higher score on a functional scale indicated better functioning, whereas a higher score on a symptom scale indicated a higher degree of ***: Seventy-four patients (49 laparoscopic and 25 open) were enrolled. The two groups of patients were comparable in terms of sociodemographic data, types of surgery, tumor staging, and baseline mean QoL scores. There was no significant decrease from baseline in global QoL for the laparoscopic group at different time points, whereas the global QoL was worse compared to baseline beginning at 4 mo but returned to baseline by 12 mo for the open group (P = 0.019, Friedman test). compared to the open group, the laparoscopic group had significantly better physical (89.9±1.4 vs 79.2±3.7, P = 0.016), role (85.0±3.4 vs 63.3±6.9, P = 0.005), and cognitive (73.5±3.4 vs 50.7±6.2, P = 0.002) functioning at 8 mo, fewer micturition problems at 4-8 mo (4 mo: 32.3±4.7 vs 54.7±7.1, P = 0.011; 8 mo: 22.8±4.0 vs 40.7±6.9, P = 0.020), and fewer male sexual problems from 8 mo onward (20.0±8.5 vs 76.7±14.5, P = 0.013). At 12 mo after surgery, no significant differences were observed in any functional or symptom scale between the two groups, with the exception of male sexual problems, which remained worse in the open group (29.2±11.3 vs 80.0±9.7, P = 0.026). cONcLUSION: Laparoscopic sphin
