Azathioprine monotherapy withdrawal in inflammatory bowel diseases: A retrospective mono-centric study

BACKGROUND There is no consensus on the recommended duration of and optimal time to stop azathioprine(AZA)therapy in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).Determining the optimal duration and cessation time can help to balance the risks of long-term intake with the possibility of relapse after *** To describe the events following AZA *** Retrospective analysis was performed to examine data from adult patients affected by IBD who were followed at the University of Padua and had started but then discontinued AZA between 1995 and *** on therapy duration,reasons for cessation,and type of relapse after cessation were *** regression models were used to estimate the risk of relapse in different *** A total of 133 ulcerative colitis patients and 141 Crohn’s disease patients were *** with AZA was stopped in the 1st year in approximately 34%of patients but was continued for more than 10 years in approximately 10%of *** discontinuation was due to primary failure or disease relapse in 30%of patients and due to disease remission in 25.2%of *** of the remaining cases stopped AZA therapy due to side effects(primarily clinical intolerance,cytopenia,and pancreatic disease).Patients who stopped AZA for clinical remission had an 83%lower risk of relapse during the observation time than other groups,with a relapse-free rate of 89%after 1 year and 79%after 2 *** AZA administration is effective and safe,but it requires careful monitoring for potential minor and major side *** 10%of patients who achieved remission with AZA needed a new treatment within 1 year of drug interruption.

Photodynamic therapy in cancer treatment - an update review

Cancer remains a worldwide health problem, being the disease with the highest impact on global health. Even with all the recent technological improvements, recurrence and metastasis still are the main cause of death. since photodynamic therapy (PDT) does not compromise other treatment options and presents reduced long-term morbidity when compared with chemotherapy or radiotherapy, it appears as a promising alternative treatment for controlling malignant diseases. In this review, we set out to perform a broad up-date on PDT in cancer research and treatment, discussing how this approach has been applied and what it could add to breast cancer therapy. We covered topics going from the photochemical mechanisms involved, the different cell death mechanisms being triggered by a myriad of photosensitizers up to the more recent-on-going clinical trials.

Female indris determine the rhythmic structure of the song and sustain a higher cost when the chorus size increases

Among the behavioral traits shared by some nonhuman primate species and humans there is singing. Unfortunately, our understanding of animals' rhythmic abilities is still in its infancy. Indris are the only lemurs who sing and live in monogamous pairs, usually forming a group with their offspri ng. All adult members of a group usually participate in choruses that are emitted regularly and play a role in advertising territorial occupa ncy and in tergroup spaci ng. Males and females emit phrases that have similar frequency ranges but may differ in their temporal structure. We examined whether the individuals' contribution to the song may change according to chorus size, the total duration of the song or the duration of the individual con tribution using the in ter-on set intervals within a phrase and between phrases. We found that the rhythmic structure of indri's songs depends on factors that are different for males and females. We showed that females have sigrdficantly higher variation in the rhythm of their contribution to the song and that, changes according to chorus size. Our findings indicate that female indris sustain a higher cost of singing than males whe n the nu mber of singers in creases. These results suggest that cross-species investigatio ns will be crucial to un derstanding the evoluti on ary frame in which such sexually dimorphic traits occurred.

simulation of Thermal Explosion of Catalytic Granule in Fluctuating Temperature Field

Method for numerical simulation of the temperature of granule with internal heat release in a medium with random temperature fluctuations is proposed. The method utilized the solution of a system of ordinary stochastic differential equations describing temperature fluctuations of the surrounding and granule. Autocorrelation function of temperature fluctuations has a finite decay time. The suggested method is verified by the comparison with exact analytical results. Random temperature behavior of granule with internal heat release qualitatively differs from the results obtained in the deterministic approach. Mean first passage time of granules temperature intersecting critical temperature is estimated at different regime parameters.

study of the local environment of certain ion is quite a complex problem. Due to the unique luminescent properties, Eu^3＋ ions can be used as a structural probe. In this paper, effect of doping concentration,excitation wavelength and excitation mechanism on asymmetry ratio was systematically studied using Y3Al5O12：Eu^3＋, YVO4：Eu^3＋ and Y2O3：Eu^3＋nanophosphors. The asymmetry ratio gives information about the local surrounding and environmental changes around the Eu^3＋ ions. Asymmetry ratios of YAG：Eu^3＋and YVO4：Eu^3＋ nanopowders were calculated using standard technique and the obtained average values were found to be 0.75 and 8.2, respectively. However, it is found that standard method of asymmetry ratio calculation is suitable only for samples where all Eu^3＋ ions occupy one site. The ＂multisite model＂ of asymmetry ratio calculation was developed and used for Y2O3：Eu^3＋ nanocrystalline powders. Average value of asymmetry ratio for Eu^3＋ ions occupied ＂normal＂ sites is 6.0 and for Eu^3＋ ions occupied ＂defect＂sites is 2.3.

Transition metal sulfides have been regarded as promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries(sIB).However,they face the challenges of poor electronic conductivity and large volume change,which result in capacity fade and low rate *** this work,a composite containing ultrasmall Cos(~7 nm)nanoparticles embedded in heteroatom(N,s,and O)-doped carbon was synthesized by an efficient one-step sulfidation process using a Co(salen)*** ultrasmall Cos nanoparticles are beneficial for mechanical stability and shortening Na-ions diffusion ***,the N,s,and O-doped defect-rich carbon provides a robust and highly conductive framework enriched with active sites for sodium storage as well as mitigates volume expansion and polysulfide *** anode for sIB,Cos@HDC exhibits a high initial capacity of 906 mA h g^(-1)at 100 mA g^(-1)and a stable long-term cycling life with over 1000 cycles at 500 mA g^(-1),showing a reversible capacity of 330 mA h g^(-1).Meanwhile,the Cos@HDC anode is proven to maintain its structural integrity and compositional reversibility during ***,Na-ion full batteries based on the Cos@HDC anode and Na_(3)V_(2)(PO_(4))_(3)cathode demonstrate a stable cycling behavior with a reversible specific capacity of~200 m A h g^(-1)at least for 100 ***,advanced synchrotron operando X-ray diffraction,ex-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy,and comprehensive electrochemical tests reveal the structural transformation and the Co coordination chemistry evolution of the Cos@HDC during cycling,providing fundamental insights into the sodium storage mechanism.
