Towards defining soil quality of Mediterranean calcareous agricultural soils:Reference values and potential core indicator set

To avoid soil degradation,adapt to climate change and comply with the sustainable Development goals 2030(UN General Assembly),establishing the quality/fertility of the agricultural soils of the Mediterranean region and evaluate how these evolve with time is *** enables adequate management practices to be *** Mediterranean calcareous region has received little attention in this sense,in spite its soil ***,24 different representative calcareous agricultural soils of the Mediterranean region,including the main management strategies of agricultural soils(rainfed and irrigated),were sampled from the island of Mallorca;and their physical,chemical and biological properties *** values obtained for most of the soil characteristics allowed to establish an initial approach to the reference values for the type of calcareous agricultural soils considered,and to clearly distinguish the effect of rainfed or irrigation management practices on soils properties and *** enzyme activities were not stimulated by the irrigation conditions assayed or they were only in dry conditions,suggesting optimum enzyme activities could be obtained when alternating dry and humid soil *** organic carbon,calcium carbonate and active lime revealed of significant importance in the collection of ***,the results obtained clearly indicate the heterogeneity of the region and its implications on the different soil ***,this study could serve as a starting point to adequately establish the quality(fertility)for Mediterranean calcareous agricultural soils and their reference values by conducting further research in this region and including more type of soils.

In 1934,Frits Zernike demonstrated that it is possible to exploit the sample’s refractive index to obtain superior contrast images of biological *** refractive index contrast of a cell surrounded by media yields a change in the phase and intensity of the transmitted light *** change can be due to either scattering or absorption caused by the *** cells are transparent at visible wavelengths,which means the imaginary component of their complex refractive index,also known as extinction coefficient k,is close to ***,we explore the use of c-band ultra-violet(UVC)light for high-contrast high-resolution label-free microscopy,as k is naturally substantially higher in the UVC than at visible *** differential phase contrast illumination and associated processing,we achieve a 7-to 300-fold improvement in contrast compared to visible-wavelength and UVA differential interference contrast microscopy or holotomography,and quantify the extinction coefficient distribution within liver sinusoidal endothelial *** a resolution down to 215 nm,we are,for the first time in a far-field label-free method,able to image individual fenestrations within their sieve plates which normally requires electron or fluorescence superresolution *** illumination also matches the excitation peak of intrinsically fluorescent proteins and amino acids and thus allows us to utilize autofluorescence as an independent imaging modality on the same setup.

Mating system and genetic diversity of a rare desert legume Ammopiptanthus nanus (Leguminosae)

Ammopiptanthus nanus is an endangered evergreen shrub endemic to the deserts of central Asia and plays an important role in delaying further desertification. We examined allozyme variation and AFLP diversity in A. nanus populations and investigated the mating system of this species using progeny arrays assayed for poly-morphic allozyme loci. Mating system analysis in the Keyi’eryongke’er population showed low levels of out-crossing, and strong inbreeding depression. Low levels of genetic variation were detected at both population (allozyme, Pp=14.0%, A=1.14, He=0.031; AFLP, Pp=14.5%, shannon’s information index I=0.063) and species (allozyme, Pp=21.1%, A=1.21, He=0.040; AFLP, Pp=20.9%, I=0.083) levels; while moderate genetic differentiation existed among populations, as indicated by allozymes (GsT=0.081) and AFLP (GsT=0.151-0.193). Founder effect, bottlenecks in evolutionary history, the mixed mating system and co-ancestry may have influenced the level of genetic diversity in A. nanus. Markers of both types provide new insights for conservation management, indicating that the Biao’ertuokuoyi and Keyi’eryongke’er populations should be given priority for in situ conservation and regarded as seed sources for ex situ conservation.

The industrial obtainment and manufacturing of food cause high levels of pollution because of the generation of waste byproducts. Over the past few years, there has been a significantly increased interest in preserving, restoring and establishing an ecological balance during food production. Many investigators propose biotechnological solutions to the treatment of industrial wastes, especially waste from the dairy industry. The aim of this review is to present biotechnological approaches to the treatment and utilization of wastes from the dairy industry, specifically for milk whey and also discussed biotechnological methods to reduce environmental pollution and obtain chemical compounds with potential applications in the industry.

Mechanical alloying and subsequent heat treatment of Ag-Zn powders

Microstructural evolution during mechanical alloying of Ag and Zn, and subsequent heat treatments were investigated. The mechanical alloying was carried out in a sPEX 8000D miller. The microstructural characterization was obtained by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, transmission electron microscopy （TEM） and scanning electron microscopy （sEM）. The thermal behavior was studied using differential scanning calorimetry （DsC）. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that at the early stages of milling was possible to detect the ε, β, β′, α solid solutions and remaining Zn. Later, the ε, β, β′ and Zn phases disappeared while the Zn concentration of the α solid solution was strongly increased. After 7.2 ks of milling, the mechanical alloying process reached a steady state. During this period, both the composition and crystallite size of the α solid solution remained practically unchanged. On the other hand, subsequent heat treatments of milled powders showed that the α solid solution could also be obtained by the combination of mechanical alloying and heat treatment. Finally, the evolution of the microstructure during milling and annealing was combined to propose an optimal processing route in order to obtain a α solid solution.

BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer(CRC) is the second most common cause of cancer death worldwide. It is broadly described that cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2) is mainly overexpressed in CRC but less is known regarding post-translational modifications of this enzyme that may regulate its activity, intracellular localization and stability. since metabolic and proteomic profile analysis is essential for cancer prognosis and diagnosis, our hypothesis is that the analysis of correlations between these specific parameters and COX-2 state in tumors of a high number of CRC patients could be useful for the understanding of the basis of this cancer in *** To analyze COX-2 regulation in colorectal cancer and to perform a detailed analysis of their metabolic and proteomic *** Biopsies from both healthy and pathological colorectal tissues were taken under informed consent from patients during standard colonoscopy procedure in the University Hospital of Bellvitge(Barcelona, spain) and Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital(Campus Can Ruti)(Barcelona, spain). Western blot analysis was used to determine COX-2 levels. Deglycosylation assays were performed in both cells and tumor samples incubating each sample with peptide N-glycosidase F(PNGase F). Prostaglandin E2(PGE2) levels were determined using a specific ELIsA. 1 H high resolution magic angle spinning(HRMAs) analysis was performed using a Bruker AVIII 500 MHz spectrometer and proteomic analysis was performed in a nano-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer(nano LC-Ms/Ms) using a QExactive HF orbitrap *** Our data show that COX-2 has a differential expression profile in tumor tissue of CRC patients vs the adjacent non-tumor area, which correspond to a glycosylated and less active state of the protein. Fluidization behavior and reducibility of iron ore fines during hydrogen-induced fluidized bed reduction

Expansion of small Terrestrial Mammals and Their Parasites into the Barun Valley (Makalu Mt. Region, Nepal Himalaya) Linked with Changes in Glaciation and Human Activities

The article is based on collection of small terrestrial mammals(soriculus nigrescens,Episoriculus caudatus, Neodon sikimensis,Alticola stoliczkanus, Niviventer eha and Ochotona roylei) collected in the Barun Valley, east Nepal in the pre-monsoon period of *** and ecological characteristics and altitudinal stratification of these species are analysed, depending both on abiotic(geomorphological and climatic) and biotic(vegetation, and human presence and activities)factors. All the captured mammals were examined for ecto- and endoparasities. Infestations of Trombiculid mites and Ixodid ticks were tightly linked to the local habitat where these ectoparasites must survive during their nonparasitic phase. Analysis of their occurrence completes the reconstruction of migration routes during the expansion of small mammals into the Barun Valley and the exacerbating influence of human activities(summer pasturing,mountaineering expeditions and trekking parties).An indicator of anthropogenic influence was the occurrence of synantropic flies. The potential medical importance of these findings is *** is assumed a possible occurrence of arboviruses transmitted by ticks and also rickettsioses(transmitted by ticks and chigger mites). As far bacteriological infections, plague cannot be excluded.
