Foraging, feeding, and physiological stress responses of wild wood mice to increased illumination and common genet cues

In nature, animals are exposed to a broad range of threats imposed by predators, which may strongly influence the ecology of prey species directly or indirectly by affecting their behavior via fear of predation. Here, we studied wood mice Apodemus sylvaticus behavioral and physiological responses to simulated predation risk. Risk avoidance was analyzed by live trapping with control traps and traps treated with feces of common genet Genetta genetta （direct cue of risk） under new moon nights and following by simulated full moon conditions （indirect cue）. The time devoted to foraging behavior and capture time were analyzed by video recording mice activity around traps. Food intake was calculated based on the amount of bait remaining in each trap. Fecal cortico- sterone metabolites （FCms） were measured by enzyme-immunoassay as indicators of physio- logical stress responses. Fewer wood mice were captured during full moon, yet only non-breeding adult males clearly avoided common genet odor. mice were captured sooner at night during the simulated full moon conditions and later in predator-treated traps. Foraging activity was lower when individuals faced predator＇s feces, but neither food intake nor FCm levels were affected by predation risk cues. direct and indirect cues of predation risk selectively affected wood mice behavior, although behavioral responses seem to be modulated by different costs-benefit balances related to the individual＇s perception of risk. The lack of physiological responses to predation risk cues suggests that wood mice did not perceive them as reliable stressors or the response was too small or transient to be measured by FCm.

Linseed oil was epoxidized using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), acetic acid (AcOH) and ion exchange resin AmberliteIR-120 as a catalyst. Epoxidized oil was separately dissolved in isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or diethylene glycol butylether (dGBE) and phosphorylated with different amounts of phosphoric (H3PO4) acid (1%, 2%, 3% and 5%). Theformation of phosphate polyesters was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and 31P nuclearmagnetic resonance (NmR) spectra. Based on the synthesized polyols, polyurethane (PU) coatings were *** coating based on linseed oil diethylene glycol ester polyol was used as the reference. For the characterizationof coatings, mechanical tests and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used. The flammability parameters ofwood samples with PU coatings at a heat flux of 35 kW/m2 were determined. It was found that PU coatings basedon IPA polyols had higher mechanical characteristics, char residue upon thermal decomposition and flameretardancy.

The cycloaddition of CO_(2) to epoxides to afford cyclic organic carbonates is an increasingly relevant non-reductive strategy to convert CO_(2) to useful products able to serve as high-boiling solvents,chemical intermediates,and monomers for the preparation of more sustainable *** development of efficient and robust hetero-geneous catalysts for such transformation is,therefore,crucial and can be carried out by several strategies that often require the preparation of sophisticated and/or expensive organic networks,linkers,or compounds.A different approach to the preparation of heterogeneous catalysts for CO_(2)-epoxide coupling is by applying surface science methodologies to graft molecular fragments or single atoms on various supports leading to well-defined active *** this context,surface organometallic chemistry(SOmC),along with comparable methodologies,is a valuable approach for the preparation of efficient,single-site Lewis acids and catalysts for the target cycloaddition reaction on metal oxides,whereas,other grafting methodologies,can be applied to prepare analogous catalysts on different kinds of ***,we discuss very recent advances in the application of surface methodologies for the preparation of single atom catalysts as an increasingly relevant approach towards highly active Lewis acids for the cycloaddition of CO_(2) to ***,we show that Lewis acids and catalysts prepared by facile surface methodologies hold significant potential for future application is the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from CO_(2).

Tumorigenicity-inhibiting compounds have been identifled in our daily *** example,isothiocyanates(ITCs)found in cruciferous vegetables were reported to have potent cancer=prevention *** best characterized ITC is sulforaphane(SF).SF can simultaneously modulate multiple cellular targets involved in carcinogenesis,including(1)modulating carcinogen-metabolizing enzymes and blocking the action of mutagens;(2)inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis;and(3)inhibition of neo-angiogenesis and *** targets cancer stem cells through modulation of nuclear factor kappa B(NF-κB),Sonic hedgehog(SHH),epithelial-mesenchymal transition,and Wnt/βcatenin *** chemotherapy/SF combination was tested in several studies and resulted in favorable *** its favorable toxicological profile,SF is a promising agent in cancer prevention and/or *** this article,we discuss the human metabolism of SF and its effects on cancer prevention,treatment,and targeting cancer stem cells,as well as providing a brief review of recent human clinical trials on SF.

mollusca is the second-largest animal phylum with over 100,000 extant species representing eight *** 1000 extant species in the class Polyplacophora,chitons have a relatively constrained morphology but with some notable *** genera possess“shell eyes”,i.e.,true eyes with a lens and retina that are embedded within the dorsal *** phylogeny of the major chiton clades is mostly well established,in a set of superfamily-level and higher level taxa supported by various approaches,including morphological studies,multiple gene markers,mitogenome-phylogeny,and phylotranscriptomic ***,one critical lineage has remained unclear,namely Schizochiton which was controversially suggested as being the potential independent origin of chiton shell ***,with the draft genome sequencing of Schizochiton incisus(superfamily Schizochitonoidea)plus assemblies of transcriptome data from other polyplacophorans,we present phylogenetic reconstructions using both mitochondrial genomes and phylogenomic approaches with multiple *** found that phylogenetic trees from mitogenomic data are inconsistent,reﬂecting larger scale confounding factors in molluscan ***,a consistent and robust topology was generated with protein-coding genes using diﬀerent models and *** results support Schizochitonoidea as the sister group to other Chitonoidea in Chitonina,in agreement with the established classiﬁ*** with evidence from fossils,our phylogenetic results suggest that the earliest origin of shell eyes is in Schizochitonoidea,and that these structures were also gained secondarily in other genera in *** results have generated a holistic review of the internal relationship within Polyplacophora,and a better understanding of the evolution of Polyplacophora.

male factor contributes to 50%-60% of overall infertility but is solely responsible in only 20% of couples. Although most male factor infertility is ascertained from an abnormal semen analysis, other male factors can be contributory especially if the sample returns normal. male infertility can be due to identifiable hormonal or anatomical etiologies that may be reversible or irreversible. This manuscript will highlight existing guidelines and our recommendations for hormone evaluation for male infertility and empiric therapies including multivitamins, estrogen receptor modulators （clomiphene）, estrogen conversion blockers （anastrozole）, and hormone replacement.

Histones package dNA in all eukaryotes and play key roles in regulating gene expression. Approximately 150 base pairs of dNA wraps around an octamer of core histones to form the nucleosome, the basic unit of chromatin. Linker histones compact chromatin further by binding to and neutralizing the charge of the dNA between nucleosomes. It is well established that chromatin packing is regulated by a complex pattern of posttranslational modifications （PTms） to core histones, but linker histone function is less well understood. In this review, we describe the current understand- ing of the many roles that linker histones play in cellular processes, including gene regulation, cell division, and devel- opment, while putting the linker histone in the context of other nuclear proteins. Although intriguing roles for plant linker histones are beginning to emerge, much of our current understanding comes from work in animal systems. many unanswered questions remain and additional work is required to fully elucidate the complex processes mediated by linker histones in plants.

multivariate statistical technique was used to determine the potassium （K＋） status and to assess soil fertility and K leaching potential in some calcareous soils. Water-soluble K＋（H20-K） and ammonium acetate-extractable K＋（NHaOAc- K） ranged from 0.019 to 0.590 （mean value 0.095） and 0.390 to 3.320 （mean value 0.954） cmolc kg-1, respectively. The nitric acid-extractable K＋（HNO3-K） varied from 1.03 to 13.63 （mean value 5.37） cmolc kg-1. The proportion of H20-K ranged from 0.34% to 14.8% of HNO3-K, and 2.2% to 53.2% of NHaOAc-K. The proportion of NHaOAc-K ranged from 5.8% to 80% of HNO3-K （mean value 23% of HNOa-K）. The tendency of the soil to lose K＋ by leaching was examined by determining K＋-Ca2＋ exchange isotherms. The soils mostly had moderate to high values of K＋ sorption capacity, ranging from 10% to 58% （mean value 28%） of added K＋. The Gapon coefficient varied widely from 1.1 to 12.0 （L mol-1）-1/2. Clay minerals were dominated by illite, smectites and vermiculite with small amounts of kaolinite. Principal component analysis （PCA） showed that the first four components accounted for 27.7%, 21.4%, 13.8%, and 8.9% of total variation, respectively. The non-hierarchical cluster analysis （k-means clustering） grouped 75 sampling sites into six clusters, based on the similarity of soil quality characteristics. The results suggested that such classes could form a basis for variable-rate application to maintain an adequate K＋ status for crop production and to reduce potential K＋ loss from soil by leaching.
