Bone tissue engineering via nanostructured calcium phosphate biomaterials and stem cells

Tissue engineering is promising to meet the increasing need for bone regeneration. Nanostructured calcium phosphate （CAP） biomaterials/scaffolds are of special interest as they share chemical/crystallographic similarities to inorganic components of bone. Three applications of nano-CaP are discussed in this review： nanostructured calcium phosphate cement （CPC）; nano-CaP composites; and nano-CaP coatings. The interactions between stem cells and nano-CaP are highlighted, including cell attachment, orientation/ morphology, differentiation and in vivo bone regeneration. Several trends can be seen：（i） nano-CaP biomaterials support stem cell attachment/proliferation and induce osteogenic differentiation, in some cases even without osteogenic supplements; （ii） the influence of nano-CaP surface patterns on cell alignment is not prominent due to non-uniform distribution of nano-crystals; （iii） nano-CaP can achieve better bone regeneration than conventional CaP biomaterials; （iv） combining stem cells with nano-CaP accelerates bone regeneration, the effect of which can be further enhanced by growth factors; and （v） cell microencapsulation in nano-CaP scaffolds is promising for bone tissue engineering. These understandings would help researchers to further uncover the underlying mechanisms and interactions in nano-CaP stem cell constructs in vitro and in vivo, tailor nano-CaP composite construct design and stem cell type selection to enhance cell function and bone regeneration, and translate laboratory findings to clinical treatments.

Radiation-induced cardiovascular disease(RICVd) is the most common nonmalignant cause of morbidity and mortality among cancer survivors who have undergone mediastinal radiation therapy(RT).Cardiovascular complications include effusive or constrictive pericarditis,cardiomyopathy,valvular heart disease,and coronary/vascular *** are pathophysiologically distinct disease entities whose prevalence varies depending on the timing and extent of radiation exposure to the heart and great *** refinements in RT dosimetry and shielding will inevitably limit future cases of RICVd,the increasing number of long-term cancer survivors,including those treated with older higher-dose RT regimens,will ensure a steady flow of afflicted patients for the foreseeable ***,there is a pressing need for enhanced understanding of the disease mechanisms,and improved detection methods and treatment *** characterized mechanisms responsible for the establishment of chronic fibrosis,such as oxidative stress,inflammation and epigenetic modifications,are discussed and linked to potential treatments currently under *** imaging modalities may serve as powerful screening tools in RICVd,and recent research and expert opinion advocating their use is *** arguing for the aggressive use of percutaneous interventions,such as transcutaneous valve replacement and drug-eluting stents,are examined and considered in the context of prior therapeutic *** and its treatment options are the subject of a rich and dynamic body of research,and patients who are at risk or suffering from this disease will benefit from the care of physicians with specialty expertise in the emerging field of cardiooncology.

Ipsilateral femur and tibia fractures in pediatric patients:A systematic review

AIM To better understand how pediatric floating knee injuries are managed after the wide spread use of new orthopaedic *** We searched EMBASE, COCHRANE and MEdLINE computerized literature databases from the earliest date available in the databases to February 2017 using the following search term including variants and pleural counterparts: Pediatric floating knee. All studies were thoroughly reviewed by multiple authors. Reference lists from all articles were scrutinized to identify any additional studies of interest. A final database of individual patients was assembled from the literature. Univariate and multivariate statistical tests were applied to the assembled database to assess differences in *** The English language literature contains series with a total of 97 pediatric patients who sustained floating knee injuries. Patients averaged 9.3 years of age and were mostly male(73). Approximately 25% of the fractures were open injuries, more tibia(27) than femur(10). Over 75% of the fractures of both the tibia and the femur involved the diaphysis. More than half(52) of the patients were treated non-operatively for both fractures. As a sequela of the injury 32(33%) patients were left with a limb length discrepancy, 24(25%) patients had lengthening of the injured limb at follow up, while 8(8%) had shortening of the affected limb. Infection developed in 9 patients and 3 had premature physeal closure. Younger patients were more likely to be treated non-operatively(P d patients treated with operative intervention had statistically significant shorter hospital length of stays(P = 0.001).CONCLUSION Given the predominance of non-operative managementin published studies, the available literature is not clinically relevant since the popularization of internal fixation for pediatric long-bone

Approaches to improve quality of care in inflammatory bowel diseases

Studies across medical disciplines have shown gaps in the care recommended in evidence based guidelines and the care actually delivered. Quality improvement projects using systematic audit and feedback interventions such as quality measures, will become increasingly important tools to address these gaps in care. These gaps are also apparent in the care of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Multiple organizations, including the American Gastroenterology Association and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, have developed programs designed to implement quality measures to improve the care of inflammatory bowel disease (IBd) patients. Early results show promise of improving quality, but numerous barriers remain. Gastroenterologists need to be aware of these processes to provide the highest care possible to patients with IBd. We review the existing literature on approaches to quality improvement and their potential application and barriers when applied to IBd care.

Nanoscale control of Ag nanostructures for plasmonic fluorescence enhancement of near-infrared dyes

Potential utilization of proteins for early detection and diagnosis of various diseases has drawn considerable interest in the development of protein-based detection techniques. Metal induced fluorescence enhancement offers the possibility of increasing the sensitivity of protein detection in clinical applications. We report the use of tunable plasmonic silver nanostructures for the fluorescence enhancement of a near-infrared （NIR） dye （Alexa Fluor 790）. Extensive fluorescence enhan- cement of -2 orders of magnitude is obtained by the nanoscale control of the Ag nanostructure dimensions and interparticle distance. These Ag nanostructures also enhanced fluorescence from a dye with very high quantum yield （7.8 fold for Alexa Fluor 488, quantum efficiency （Qy） = 0.92）. A combination of greatly enhanced excitation and an increased radiative decay rate, leading to an associated enhancement of the quantum efficiency leads to the large enhancement. These results show the potential of Ag nanostructures as metal induced fluorescence enhancement （MIFE） substrates for dyes in the NIR ＂biological window＂ as well as the visible region. Ag nanostructured arrays fabricated by colloidal lithography thus show great potential for NIR dye-based biosensing applications.

Characterization of microstructure evolution of cement paste by micro computed tomography

Micro computed tomography (Micro-CT) was applied to obtain three-dimensional images of the microstructure of cement paste (water-to-cement mass ratio of 0.5) at different ages. By using the Amira software, component phases of the cement paste such as pores, hydration products, and unhydrated clinker particles were segmented from each other based on their 3d image grey levels; their relative contents were also calculated with the software, and the data are 61.2%, 0% and 38.8% at the beginning of hydration and 11.8%, 78.5% and 9.7% at 28 d age, respectively. The hydration degree of cement paste at different ages was compared with the experimental data acquired by loss on ignition (LOI) tests. The results show that the calculated and measured data reasonably agree with each other, which indicates that micro-CT is a useful and reliable approach to characterize the micro structure evolution of hydrating cement paste.

Background:To generate and validate a method to estimate axial length estimated(AL_(est))from spherical equivalent(SE)and corneal curvature[keratometry(K)],and to determine if this AL_(est)can replace actual axial length(AL_(act))for correcting transverse magnification error in optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)images using the Littmann-Bennett ***:data from 1301 participants of the Raine Study Gen2-20 year follow-up were divided into two datasets to generate(n=650)and validate(n=651)a relationship between AL,SE,and *** developed formula was then applied to a separate dataset of 46 participants with AL,SE,and K measurements and OCTA images to estimate and compare the performance of AL_(est)against AL_(act)in correcting transverse magnification error in OCTA images when measuring the foveal avascular zone area(FAZA).Results:The formula for AL_(est)yielded the equation:AL_(est)=2.102K−0.4125SE+7.268,R^(2)=*** was good agreement between AL_(est)and AL_(act)for both study *** mean difference[standard deviation(Sd)]between FAZA corrected with AL_(est)and AL_(act)was 0.002(0.015)mm^(2)with the 95%limits of agreement(LoA)of−0.027 to 0.031 mm^(2).In comparison,mean difference(Sd)between FAZA uncorrected and corrected with AL_(act)was−0.005(0.030)mm^(2),with 95%LoA of−0.064 to 0.054 mm^(2).Conclusions:AL_(act)is more accurate than AL_(est)and hence should be used preferentially in magnification error correction in the clinical *** corrected with AL_(est)is comparable to FAZA corrected with AL_(act),while FAZA measurements using images corrected with AL_(est)have a greater accuracy than measurements on uncorrected ***,in the absence of AL_(act),clinicians should use AL_(est)to correct for magnification error as this provides for more accurate measurements of fundus parameters than uncorrected images.

Economical Optimization of Grid Power Factor Using Predictive data

We present an electrical grid optimization method for economical benefit. After simplifying an IEEE feeder diagram, we build a compact smart grid system including a photovoltaic-inverter system, a shunt capacitor, an on-load tapchanger(OLTC) and transmission lines. The system power factor(PF) regulation and reactive power dispatching are indispensable to improve power quality. Our control method uses predictive weather and load data to decide engaging or tripping the shunt capacitor, or reactive power injection by the photovoltaic-inverter system, ultimately to keep the system PF in a good range. From the perspective of economics, the economical model is considered as a decision maker in our predictive data control ***-only control strategy is a common photovoltaic(PV)regulation method, which is treated as a baseline case. Simulations with GridLAB-d on profiled loads and residential loads have been carried out. The comparison results with baseline control strategy and our predictive data control method show the appreciable economical benefit of our method.

WHAT ARE THE dIFFERENCES OF POLYMER SURFACE RELAXATION FROM THE BULK?

The polymer surface relaxation in thin films has been a long debating issue. We report a new method on studying surface relaxation behaviors of polymer thin films on a solid substrate. This method involved utilizing a rubbed polyimide surface with a pretilting angle in a liquid crystalline cell. due to the surface alignment, the liquid crystals were aligned along the rubbing direction. during heating the liquid crystalline cell, we continuously monitored the change of orientation of the liquid crystals. It is understood that at a temperature where the orientation of liquid crystal is lost, the surface relaxation on the glass substrate takes place to lose the polyimide surface orientation. It was found that the relaxation temperature at which the liquid crystals lose their orientation depends on the film thickness of the polyimide. A quantitative linear relationship between the relaxation temperature and reciprocal of the film thickness can be observed. Furthermore, different topologies of the rubbed and relaxed thin films were amplified using the polyethylene decoration method and observed using atomic force microscopy.
