Effects of Saccharom.ces cerevisiae or boulardii yeasts on acute stress induced intestinal dysm.tility

AIm.To investigate the capacity of Saccharom.ces cerevisiae(S. cerevisiae) and Saccharom.ces boulardii(S. boulardii) yeasts to reverse or to treat acute stress-related intestinal *** Adult Swiss Webster m.ce were stressed for 1 h in a wire-m.sh restraint to induce sym.tom. of intestinal dysm.tility and were subsequently killed by cervical dislocation. Jejunal and colon tissue were excised and placed within a tissue perfusion bath in which S. cerevisiae, S. boulardii, or their supernatants were adm.nistered into the lum.n. Video recordings of contractility and gut diam.ter changes were converted to spatiotem.oral m.ps and the velocity, frequency, and am.litude of propagating contractile clusters(PCC) were m.asured. m.tility pre- and post-treatm.nt was com.ared between stressed anim.ls and unstressed controls. RESULTS S. boulardii and S. cerevisiae helped to m.diate the effects of stress on the sm.ll and large intestine. Restraint stress reduced jejunal transit velocity(m./s)from.2.635 ± 0.316 to 1.644 ± 0.238, P m.0.032 ± 0.008 to 0.016 ± 0.005, P m./s) from.0.864 ± 0.183 to 1.432 ± 0.329, P m.nal application of S. boulardii helped to restore jejunal and colonic velocity towards the unstressed controls; 1.833 ± 0.688 to 2.627 ± 0.664, P m.st apparent in the jejunum. S. cerevisiae increased PCC velocity in the stressed jejunum.from.1.763 ± 0.397 to 2.017 ± 0.48, P = 0.0031 and PCC frequency from.0.016 ± 0.009 to 0.027 ± 0.007, P m.1.647 ± 0.187 to 1.038 ± 0.222, P m.tility to unstressed values in sim.lar capacity. Vulvodynia is a prevalent form.of chronic pain, m.st com. m.nly affecting the vaginal vestibule （vestibulodynia）（Pukall et al., 2016）. Wom.n with vulvodynia describe intense pain in response to light touch of the affected region, such that sexual function and other activities can be severely lim.ted. m.dical costs associated with vulvodynia are high, exceeding $21 billion annually in the United States （Xie et al., 2012）. The high level of direct m.dical costs has been linked to high treatm.nt failure rates. m.ny wom.n with the disorder consult m.ltiple practitioners and undergo m.ltiple courses of treatm.nt with lim.ted benefit.

Im.rovem.nt of the Corrosion Resistance of High Alloyed Austenitic Cr-Ni-m. Stainless Steels by Solution Nitriding

Characteristic features of austenitic steel grades com.ine a good corrosion resistance with a low hardness, wear resistance and scratch resistance. An interesting possibility for im.roving the wear behaviour of these steels without loss of their corrosion resistance lies in enriching the near surface region with nitrogen. The process of a solution nitriding allows the rise of the solution of nitrogen in the solid phase. On this state nitrogen increases the corrosion resistance and the tribilogical load-bearing capacity. The aim.of the study was, to investigate the im.rovem.nt of the pitting corrosion behaviour by solution nitriding. A special topic was to observe the effect of nitrogen by different m.lybdenum.content. So austenitic stainless steels (18% Cr, 12% Ni, m. gradation between 0.06 to 3.6%) had been solution nitrided. The sam.les could be prepared with various surface content of nitrogen from.0.04 to 0.45% with a step-by-step grinding. The susceptibility against pitting corrosion of these sam.les had been tested by determ.nation of the stable pitting potential in 0.5m.and 1m.NaCl at 25°C. For the investigated steel com.osition and the used corrosion system.there is no influence of m.lybdenum.on the effectiveness of nitrogen. The influence of nitrogen to all of the determ.ned param.ters can be described well by PRE = Cr + 3,3 * m. + 25 *N. XPS analysis of the sam.le surfaces support the results of the pitting corrosion *** surface investigations with an acid elektolyte (0,1m.HC1 + 0,4m.NaCl) were perform.d. In this case the passivation effective nitrogen content increases m.rkedly with rising m.lybdenum.concentration of the steel. Obviously an interaction of m. and N is connected with a strongly acid electrolyte.

In order to analyze the adaptation potential of tom.to shoots to a sudden increase in Cd concentration, tom.to plants （Solanum.lycopersicum.L. var. Ailsa Craig） were exposed under controlled environm.ntal conditions to a high dose of this heavy m.tal （250 μm.CdCl2） in nutrient solution for 7 and 14d. Both root and shoot growth was com.letely inhibited but all plants rem.ined alive until the end of the treatm.nt. Cell viability rem.ined unaffected but the activity of the m.tochondrial alternative pathway was stim.lated by Cd stress at the expense of the cytochrom. pathway. Cadm.um.concentration was higher in roots than in shoots and a decrease in the rate of net Cd translocation was noticed during the second week of stress. Cadm.um.decreased both leaf conductance （gl） and chlorophyll concentration. However, the effect on net CO2 assim.lation rem.ined lim.ted and soluble sugars accum.lated in leaves. Photochem.cal efficiency of PSII （FvlFm. was not affected despite a decrease in the num.er of reaction centers and an inhibition of electron transfer to acceptors of PSII. It is concluded that tom.to shoot m.y sustain short term.exposure to high doses of cadm.um.despite growth inhibition. This property im.lies several physiological strategies linked to both avoidance and tolerance m.chanism..
