Ensemble and single particle studies of the excitation power density (P)-dependent upconversion luminescence (UCL) of core and core-shell β-NaYF_(4):Yb,Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) doped with 20% Yb^(3+) and 1% or 3% Er^(^(3+)) performed over a P regime of 6 orders of magnitude reveal an increasing contribution of the emission from high energy Er^(3+) levels at P > 1 kW/cm^(2). This changes the overall emission color from initially green over yellow to white. While initially the green and with increasing P the red emission dominate in ensemble measurements at P m^(2), the increasing population of higher Er^(^(3+)) energy levels by multiphotonic processes at higher P in single particle studies results in a multitude of emission bands in the ultraviolet/visible/near infrared (UV/vis/NIR) accompanied by a decreased contribution of the red luminescence. Based upon a thorough analysis of the P-dependence of UCL, the emission bands activated at high P were grouped and assigned to 2–3, 3–4, and 4 photonic processes involving energy transfer (ET), excited-state absorption (ESA), cross-relaxation (CR), back energy transfer (BET), and non-radiative relaxation processes (nRP). This underlines the P-tunability of UCNP brightness and color and highlights the potential of P-dependent measurements for mechanistic studies required to manifest the population pathways of the different Er^(3+) levels.

A major feature of humans is that they can attain much higher population densities than any non-domestic animal species of similar body size(Damuth 1987).This is most likely due to the invention of agriculture(Herrera and Garcia-Bertrand 2018),which allowed humans to manage ecosystems in such a way that as much biomass as possible is converted into food(Vitousek et al.1986).

Experimental treatment of pancreatic cancer with two novel histone deacetylase inhibitors

AIm:To investigate in vitro and in vivo treatment with histone deacetylase inhibitors NVP-LAQ824 and NVP-LBH589 in pancreatic cancer. mETHODS:Cell-growth inhibition by NVP-LAQ824 and NVP-LBH589 was studied in vitro in 8 human pancreatic cancer cell lines using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) -2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(mTT) assay. In addition,the anti-tumoral effect of NVP-LBH589 was studied in a chimeric mouse model. Anti-tumoral activity of the drugs was assessed by immunoblotting for p21WAF-1,acH4,cell cycle analysis,TUNEL assay,and immunohistochemistry for mIB-1. RESULTS:In vitro treatment with both compounds significantly suppressed the growth of all cancer cell lines and was associated with hyperacetylation of nucleosomal histone H4,increased expression of p21WAF-1,cell cycle arrest at G2/m-checkpoint,and increased apoptosis. In vivo,NVP-LBH589 alone significantly reduced tumor mass and potentiated the efficacy of gemcitabine. Further analysis of the tumor specimens revealed slightly increased apoptosis and no significant reduction of cell ***:Our findings suggest that NVP-LBH589 and NVP-LAQ824 are active against human pancreatic cancer,although the precise mechanism of in vivo drug action is not yet completely understood. Therefore,further preclinical and clinical studies for the treatment of pancreatic cancer are recommended.

With big-data driven materials research,the new paradigm of materials science,sharing and wide accessibility of data are becoming crucial ***,a prerequisite for data exchange and big-data analytics is standardization,which means using consistent and unique conventions for,e.g.,units,zero base lines,and file *** are two main strategies to achieve this *** accepts the heterogeneous nature of the community,which comprises scientists from physics,chemistry,bio-physics,and materials science,by complying with the diverse ecosystem of computer codes and thus develops“converters”for the input and output files of all important *** converters then translate the data of each code into a standardized,codeindependent *** other strategy is to provide standardized open libraries that code developers can adopt for shaping their inputs,outputs,and restart files,directly into the same code-independent *** this perspective paper,we present both strategies and argue that they can and should be regarded as complementary,if not even *** represented appropriate format and conventions were agreed upon by two teams,the Electronic Structure Library(ESL)of the European Center for Atomic and molecular Computations(CECAm)and the NOvel mAterials Discovery(NOmAD)Laboratory,a European Centre of Excellence(CoE).A key element of this work is the definition of hierarchical metadata describing state-of-the-art electronic-structure calculations.

Voxel-based analyses of magnetization transfer imaging of the brain in hepatic encephalopathy

AIm: To evaluate the spatial distribution of cerebral abnormalities in cirrhotic subjects with and without hepatic encephalopathy (HE) found with magnetization transfer imaging (mTI).mETHODS: Nineteen cirrhotic patients graded from neurologically normal to HE grade 2 and 18 healthy control subjects underwent magnetic resonance imaging. They gave institutional-review-board-approved written consent. magnetization transfer ratio (mTR) maps were generated from mTI. We tested for significant differences compared to the control group using statistical non-parametric mapping (SnPm) for a voxelbased ***: The mTR of grey and white matter was lower in subjects with more severe HE. Changes were found in patients with cirrhosis without neurological defi cits in the basal ganglia and bilateral white matter. The loss in magnetization transfer increased in severity and spatial extent in patients with overt HE. Patients with HE grade 2 showed an mTR decrease in white and grey matter: the maximum loss of magnetization transfer effect was located in the basal ganglia [SnPm (pseudo-)t = 17.98, P = 0.0001].CONCLUSION: The distribution of mTR changes in HE points to an early involvement of basal ganglia and white matter in HE.

“Polymer-in-ceramic” based poly(ε-caprolactone)/ceramic composite electrolyte for all-solid-state batteries

Inspired by the concept of "polymer-in-ceramic",a composite poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL)/ceramic containing LiTFSI is prepared and investigated as a solid electrolyte for all-solid-state *** composite with the optimum concentration of 45 wt% LiTFSI and 75 wt% Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3(LAGP,NASICON-type structure) exhibits a high ionic conductivity(σi=0.17 mS cm-1) at 30℃,a transference number of 0.30,and is stable up to 5.0 *** composite electrolyte is a flexible and self-standing ***-state LiFePO4//Li batteries with this composite electrolyte demonstrate excellent cycling stability with high discharge capacity of 157 mA h g-1,high capacity retention of 96% and coulombic efficiency of 98.5% after 130 cycles at 30℃ and 0.1 C *** electrochemical properties are better than other PCL-based allsolid-lithium batteries,and validate the concept of "polymer-in-ceramic" by avoiding the drawback of lower conductivity in prior "polymer-in-ceramic" electrolyte at high concentration of the ceramic.

A simultaneous approach for integration of thermal energy storages in industrial processes using multiperiod heat integration

In times of increasing global warming,enormous efforts are required to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas(GHG)*** to the EU’s target of climate neutrality by 2050 and the even more ambitious goal of becoming climate-neutral in Germany by 2045,it is necessary to systematically increase energy efficiency and decarbonize the industrial heat *** methods of heat integration can be used to exploit existing potentials for waste heat utilization and to integrate renewable technologies for heating and *** using a non-stationary,multiperiod approach,additional energy savings can be achieved by integrating a thermal energy storage(TES)that enables heat transportation over *** paper presents a simultaneous approach for thermal energy storage integration into multiperiod heat integration *** approach can be used to minimize energy demand,costs and CO 2 emissions and is demonstrated in two case *** case study 1,it is shown that the presented approach is capable of integrating a TES properly into a simple multiperiod heat integration problem with two *** case study 2,a simplified example from a cosmetics manufactory is *** total utility demand can be reduced by up to 44.3%due to TES integration and the energetic optimal storage size can be determined as 125 m *** savings are strongly dependent on the constellation of heat flows between the periods,on the temperature levels and on the storage *** reductions of energy demand,costs and CO 2 emissions can be achieved with TES being properly integrated into a suitable operating environment.
