Inhibition of pacemaker activity in interstitial cells of Cajal by LPS via NF-κB and MAP kinase

AIM:To investigate lipopolysaccharide(LPS) related signal transduction in interstitial cells of Cajal(ICCs) from mouse small ***:For this study,primary culture of ICCs was prepared from the small intestine of the *** was treated to the cells prior to measurement of the membrane currents by using whole-cell patch clamp *** was used to examine the expression of the proteins in ***:LPS suppressed the pacemaker currents of ICCs and this could be blocked by AH6809,a prostaglandin E2-EP2 receptor antagonist or NG-Nitro-Larginine Methyl Ester,an inhibitor of nitric oxide(NO) ***-like receptor 4,inducible NO synthase or cyclooxygenase-2 immunoreactivity by specific antibodies was detected on ***(antioxidant agent) had no action on LPS-induced action in *** actions were blocked by nuclear factor kB(NF-kB) inhibitor,actinomycin D(a gene transcription inhibitor),PD 98059(a p42/44 mitogen-activated protein kinases inhibitor) or SB 203580 [a p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases(MAPK) inhibitor].SB 203580 also blocked the prostaglandin E2-induced action on pacemaker currents in ICCs but not ***:LPS inhibit the pacemaker currents in ICCs via prostaglandin E2-and NO-dependent mechanism through toll-like receptor 4 and suggest that MAPK and NF-kB are implicated in these actions.

Effects of prostaglandin F_(2α) on small intestinal interstitial cells of Cajal

AIM：To explore the role of prostaglandin F2α（PGF2α） on pacemaker activity in interstitial cells of Cajal（ICC）from mouse small intestine. METHODS：In this study,effects of PGF2αin the cultured ICC cells were investigated with patch clamp technology combined with Ca 2＋ image analysis. RESULTS：Externally applied PGF2α（10μmol/L）produced membrane depolarization in current-clamp mode and increased tonic inward pacemaker currents in voltage-clamp *** application of flufenamic acid（a non-selective cation channel inhibitor）or niflumic acid（aCl channel inhibitor）abolished the generation of pacemaker currents but only flufenamic acid inhibited the PGF2α-induced tonic inward *** addition,the tonic inward currents induced by PGF2αwere not inhibited by intracellular application of 5’-[-thio]diphosphate trilithium *** with Ca 2＋ free solution, U-73122,an active phospholipase C inhibitor,and thapsigargin,a Ca 2＋ -ATPase inhibitor in endoplasmic reticulum,abolished the generation of pacemaker currents and suppressed the PGF2α-induced tonic inward ***,chelerythrine or calphostin C,protein kinase C inhibitors,did not block the PGF2α-induced effects on pacemaker *** recording intracellular Ca 2＋（[Ca 2＋ ]i）concentration using fluo-3/AM,PGF2α broadly increased the spontaneous[Ca 2＋ ]i oscillations. CONCLUSION：These results suggest that PGF2αcan modulate pacemaker activity of ICC by acting non-selective action channels through phospholipase C-dependent pathway via[Ca2＋]i regulation

AIM： To investigate prevalence of C/onorchis sinensis in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, and the relation of the infection to hepatobiliary diseases in 26 hospitals in Korea. METHODS： Consecutive patients who had been admitted to the Division of Gastroenterology with gastrointestinal symptoms were enrolled from March to April 2005. Of those who had been diagnosed with clonorchiasis, epidemiology and correlation between infection and hepatobiliary diseases were surveyed by questionnaire. RESULTS： Of 3080 patients with gastrointestinal diseases, 396 （12.9%） had clonorchiasis and 1140 patients （37.2%） had a history of eating raw freshwater fish. Of those with a history of raw freshwater fish ingestion, 238 （20.9%） patients had clonorchiasis. Cholangiocarcinoma was more prevalent in C. sinensis-infected patients than nonnfected patients [34/396 （8.6%） vs 145/2684 （5.4%）, P = 0.015]. Cholangiocarcinoma and clonorchiasis showed statistically significant positive cross-relation （P = 0.008）. Choledocholithiasis, cholecystolithiasis, cholangitis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and biliary pancreatitis did not correlate with clonorchiasis. CONCLUSION： Infection rate of clonorchiasis was still high in patients with gastrointestinal diseases in Korea, and has not decreased very much during the last two decades. Cholangiocarcinoma was related to clonorchiasis, which suggested an etiological role for the parasite.

Effect of internal sloshing on added resistance of ship

The motion responses of ships carrying liquid cargo are affected not only by external wave excitation, but also by internal sloshing-induced forces and moments. Sloshing flow is coupled with the ship motion. This means the added resistance in waves may change when sloshing occurs inside the tank of the ship. In this study, the motion responses and added resistance of a ship, coupled with the sloshing-induced internal forces and moments are considered by using the linear potential theory. The three-dimensional Rankine panel method, in which the physical quantities are represented by using B-spline basis function, is applied. The sloshing flow of inner tanks is also simulated by Using the Rankine panel method and linearized boundary value problem. To study the added resistance, a near-field method, which integrates the second-order pressure on a body surface, is applied. The model ship is a blunt modified Wigley model with two inner tanks. Numerical results obtained without inner tanks are compared with the experimental data, and then the effect of filling ratio of inner tanks on ship motion and added resistance are observed. The components that induce added resistance are examined, and the effects of surge motion on sloshing flow and added resistance are briefly considered. This study shows that the sloshing flow inside the inner tanks may significantly influence not only the motion responses, but also added resistance, especially, when the incident wave frequency approaches the resonance frequency of the sloshing flow.

China's Import–exchange Rate Linkage:Evidence from the China-bound Exports of Japan and Korea

This paper examines how the China-bound exports of Japan and Korea are related to exchange rates, motivated by the fact that processing trade makes up a large proportion of China＇s trade, and that Japan and Korea are the leading source countries for processing imports. Because processing imports are inputs for exports, the link between such imports and China＇s exchange rates are ambiguous. We estimate export functions that include China＇s RMB real effective exchauge rates （REER） along with bilateral real exchange rates （B RER） using Johausen ＇s cointegration method aud find that the RMB REER significantly affects Japanese and Korean exports to China, even more so than BRER in most cases examined. These two exchange rates appear in the export equations with opposite signs. Subsequently, we use the estimated model to illustrate the importance of accounting for a concurrent change in B RER when analyzing the effects of a hypothetical RMB revaluation on China＇s trade balances despite the apparently weak imports-B RER linkage.

Exploration of cobalt selenite-carbon composite porous nanofibers as anode for sodium-ion batteries and unveiling their conversion reaction mechanism

Efforts have been made to develop a promising anode material with a novel composition for sodiumion batteries(SIBs).In this study,the sodium-ion storage mechanism of transition metal selenite that comprises transition metal cation coupled with two anions is *** cobalt selenite(CoSeO_(3))-carbon composite nanofibers containing numerous pores are synthesized via electrospinning *** heat treatment of the electrospun nanofibers containing selenium,CoSe_(2)nanoclusters are *** the subsequent oxidation,CoSe_(2)transformed into amorphous CoSeO_(3)and some part of carbon was oxidized into CO_(2),leaving the pores inside the *** unveil the electrochemical reaction mechanism,analytical methods including cyclic voltammetry,ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,ex-situ transmission electron microscopy,and in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques were *** on the analyses,the following conversion reaction from the second cycle onward is suggested:CoO+xSeO_(2)+(1-x)Se+4(x+1)Na^(+)+4(x+1)e~-?Co+(2x+1)Na_(2)O+Na_(2)***,the electrochemical properties of porous CoSeO_(3)-carbon composite nanofibers are analyzed in *** anode material exhibited stable cycle stability up to 200 cycles at 0.5 A g^(-1)and high rate performance up to 5 A g^(-1).

Rational design and synthesis of hierarchically structured SnO2 microspheres assembled from hollow porous nanoplates as superior anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Herein, hierarchically structured SnO2 microspheres are designed and synthesized as an efficient anode material for lithium-ion batteries using hollow SnO2 nanoplates. Three-dimensionally ordered macroporous （3-DOM） SnOx-C microspheres synthesized by spray pyrolysis are transformed into hierarchically structured SnO2 microspheres by a two-step post-treatment process. Sulfidation produces hierarchically structured SnS-SnS2-C microspheres comprising tin sulfide nanoplate and carbon building blocks. A subsequent oxidation process produces SnO2 microspheres from hollow SnO2 nanoplate building blocks, which are formed by Kirkendall diffusion. The discharge capacity of the hierarchically structured SnO2 microspheres at a current density of 5 Ag^-1 for the 600th cycle is 404 mA·h·g^-1. The hierarchically structured SnO2 microspheres have reversible discharge capacities of 609 and 158 mA·h·g^-1 at current densities of 0.5 and 30 Ag^-1, respectively. The ultrafine nanosheets contain empty voids that allow excellent lithium-ion storage performance, even at high current densities.

Metal@Silica Yolk-Shell Nanostructures as Versatile Bifunctional Nanocatalysts

Recent developments in nanochemistry offer precise morphology control of nanomaterials, which has significant impacts in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Rational design of bifunctional catalysts can influence various aspects of catalytic properties. In this review, a new class of bifunctional catalysts with a metal@silica yolk-shell nanostructure is introduced. This structure has many advantages as a heterogeneous catalyst since it ensures a homogeneous environment around each metal core, and particle sintering is effectively eliminated during high temperature reactions. The catalysts exhibit high activity and recyclability in gas- and solution-phase reactions. It is anticipated that appropriate selection of bifunctional components and optimal structural control will significantly further enhance the catalytic properties, and enable target reaction-oriented development of new catalysts.

Preparation of Li[Ni_(1/3)Co_(1/3)Mn_(1/3)]O_2 powders for cathode material in secondary battery by solid-state method

Employing Li2CO3, NiO, Co3O4, and MnCO3 powders as starting materials, Li[Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3]O2 was synthesized by solid-state reaction method. Various grinding aids were applied during milling in order to optimize the synthesis process. After successive heat treatments at 650 and 950 ℃, the prepared powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The powders prepared by adding salt (NaCl) as grinding aid exhibit a clear R3m layer structure. The powders by other grinding aids like heptane show some impurity peaks in the XRD pattern. The former powders show a uniform particle size distribution of less than 1 μm average size while the latter shows a wide distribution ranging from 1 to 10 μm. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysiss show that the ratio of Ni, Co, and Mn content in the powder is approximately 1/3, 1/3, and 1/3, respecively. The EDX data indicate no incorporation of sodium or chlorine into the powders. Charge-discharge tests gave an initial discharge capacity of 160 mAh·g-1 for the powders with NaCl addition while 70 mAh·g-1 for the powders with heptane.
