Computational discovery of ultra-strong, stable, and lightweight refractory multi-principal element alloys. Part II: comprehensive ternary design and validation

Here the discovery of refractory multi-principal element alloys(MPEAs)with high-temperature strength and stability is pursued within a constrained and application-relevant design space.A comprehensive approach is developed and applied to explore all 165 ternary systems in the Al-Ce-Fe-Hf-Mo-Nb-Ta-Ti-V-W-Zr family.A subset of ternary systems that contain large areas in composition–temperature space with high strength and robust BCC phase stability is *** sets of high-performing alloys are identified,each set optimized for one combination of phase constraint,optimization target,and temperature *** mechanical tests support the viability of the *** work highlights the importance of considering phase stability,exploring non-equiatomic regions of composition space,and applying application-relevant *** I and II provide three down-selection techniques for identifying high-performing BCC refractory MPEAs,design guidelines,and many candidates predicted to have BCC phase stability and strengths 2–3 times higher than any reported to date.

Mixed ionic electronic conductors(MIECs)have attracted increasing attention as anode materials for solid oxide fuel cells(sOFCs)and they hold great promise for lowering the operation temperature of ***,there has been a lack of understanding of the performance-limiting factors and guidelines for rational design of composite metal-MIEC *** a newly-developed approach based on 3 D-tomography and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy,here for the first time we quantify the contribution of the dual-phase boundary(DPB)relative to the three-phase boundary(TPB)reaction pathway on real MIEC electrodes.A new design strategy is developed for Ni/gadolinium doped ceria(CGO)electrodes(a typical MIEC electrode)based on the quantitative analyses and a novel Ni/CGO fiber-matrix structure is proposed and fabricated by combining electrospinning and tape-casting methods using commercial *** only 11.5 vol%nickel,the designer Ni/CGO fiber-matrix electrode shows 32%and 67%lower polarization resistance than a nano-Ni impregnated CGO scaffold electrode and conventional cermet electrode *** results in this paper demonstrate quantitatively using real electrode structures that enhancing DPB and hydrogen kinetics are more efficient strategies to enhance electrode performance than simply increasing TPB.

Biogenic hydroxyapatites from mammalian bones naturally contain traces of ions, like Mg, which play a vital role in the bone remodeling process. In this way, synthetic hydroxyapatites should include this kind of mineral. In this work, hydroxyapatite added with Mg was synthesized by wet precipitation using（NH;）H;PO;, Ca（NO;）;.4 H;O,and Mg（NO;）;.6 H;O（0, 0.032, 0.061, and 0.123 M）. Inductively coupled plasma and X-ray diffraction evidenced the Mg inclusion in the hydroxyapatite lattice in the same levels reported for natural hydroxyapatites. The calcination at 600℃ was performed to remove the reaction by-products, but it also gave rise to physicochemical changes as the coalescence and crystals recrystallization. It produced, in turn, an improvement in the crystalline quality, according to Raman analysis. Despite those physicochemical changes, all the samples remained nanometric according to scanning electron microscopy imaging.

It is theorized that enhanced thermal heating may result from exposing single-walled carbon nanotubes （sWNTs） embedded in a conductive host to radiofrequency （RF） electric fields. We examine the RF-induced （13.56 MHz） heating behaviors of 95% metallic- and semiconducting-enriched sWNTs （m-/s-sWNTs） suspended in aqueous solutions with varying NaC1 molarity （0.001 mM-1 M）. The heating effects were only evident for host molarities below 1 mM （equivalent to 0.1 s/m） at which the s-sWNT heating rates dominated those of the m-sWNTs. The heating effects were localized to aligned and aggregated ＂sWNT ropes＂ -1 cm in length that formed in suspension, parallel to the electric-field vector, during the RF exposure. For molarities above 1 mM, no enhancements were evident, owing to the large heating effects of the bulk ionic NaC1 suspensions, which were observed in previous studies. Although larger enhancement effects proportional to the host conductivity have been theoretically predicted for m-/s-sWNT suspensions, this was not observed most likely because of the aggregation and screening effects, which diminished the scattered electric field near the m-/s-sWNTs. Our research may further the development of better nanoparticle heating agents for applications such as non-invasive RF-induced cancer hyperthermia.

The impact of fuel-ion diffusion in inertial confinement fusion implosions is assessed using nuclear reaction yield ratios and reaction *** T3He-gas-filled(with trace D)shock-driven implosions,the observed TT/T3He yield ratio is∼23lower than expected from temperature ***3He-gas-filled(with trace T)shock-driven implosions,the timing of theD3He reaction history is∼50 ps earlier than those of the DT reaction histories,and average-ion hydrodynamic simulations cannot reconcile this timing *** experimental observations are consistent with reduced T ions in the burn region as predicted by multi-ion diffusion theory and particle-in-cell simulations.
