Background Stroke aetiology remains cryptogenic in a relevant proportion of patients with acute ischaemic stroke(AIS).We assessed whether enhanced diagnostic workup after AIS yields a higher rate of prespecified pathological findings compared with routine diagnostic care *** Hospitalised patients with AIS were prospectively enrolled in the investigator-initiated observational HEart and BRain Interfaces in Acute Ischaemic Stroke(HEBRAS)study at the Charité,Berlin,*** with AIS without known atrial fibrillation(AF)underwent cardiovascular MR imaging(CMR),MR-angiography of the aortic arch and prolonged Holter-ECG monitoring on top of routine diagnostic *** Among 356 patients with AIS(mean age 66 years,37.6%female),enhanced workup yielded a higher rate of prespecified pathological findings compared with routine care(17.7%vs 5.3%;p<0.001).Consequently,fewer patients were classified as cryptogenic after enhanced diagnostic workup(38.5%vs 45.5%,p<0.001).Routine care included echocardiography in 228(64.0%)*** was successfully performed in 292(82.0%)patients and revealed more often a prespecified pathological finding compared with routine echocardiography(16.1%vs 5.3%).Furthermore,study-related ECG monitoring(median duration 162 hours(IQR 98–210))detected AF in 16(4.5%)patients,while routine monitoring(median duration 51 hours(IQR 34–74))detected AF in seven(2.0%)*** Enhanced diagnostic workup revealed a higher rate of prespecified pathological findings in patients with AIS compared with routine diagnostic care and significantly reduced the proportion of patients with cryptogenic *** registration number NCT02142413.

Background: It remains unclear if ad libitum water drinking, as a hydration strategy, prevents exercise-associated hyponatremia(EAH) during prolonged exercise. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of EAH within the broader context of fluid regulation among soldiers performing a 40-km route-march ingesting water ad ***: Twenty-eight healthy male soldiers participated in this observational trial. Pre-and post-exercise body mass, blood and urine samples were collected. Blood samples were assessed for serum sodium([Na+]), glucose, creatinine, urea nitrogen(BUN), plasma osmolality, creatine kinase(CK), and plasma arginine vasopressin(AVP) concentrations. Plasma volume(PV) was calculated using hematocrit and hemoglobin. Urine samples were analyzed for osmolality and (Na+)Water intake was assessed by weighing bottles before, during and after the march. The mean relative humidity was 55.7%(21.9–94.3%) and the mean dry bulb temperature was 27.1°C(19.5°C-37.0°C) during the ***: Twenty-five soldiers(72±10 kg)(Mean±SD) completed the march in 09:11±00:43(hr:min). Participants consumed 736±259 ml/h of water and lost 2.8±0.9 kg(4.0%±1.4%, P<0.05) of body mass. Significant(pre-march vs. post-march;P<0.05) decreases in serum [Na+](141 mmol/L vs. 136 mmol/L), plasma osmolality(303 m Osmol/kg H2O vs. 298 m Osmol/kg H2O), and serum creatinine(111 μmol/L vs. 101 μmol/L) and urine [Na+](168 mmol/L vs. 142 mmol/L), as well as significant increases in plasma AVP(2 pg/ml vs. 11 pg/ml), plasma CK(1423 U/L vs. 3894 U/L) and urine osmolality(1035 m Osmol/kg H2O vs. 1097 m Osmol/kg H2O) were found. The soldier(72 kg) with the lowest postexercise sodium level completed the march in 08:38. He drank 800 ml/h, lost 2% body mass, and demonstrated(prepost) increases in plasma osmolality(294–314 m Osmol/kg H2O), BUN(20–30 mg/dl), AVP(2–16 pg/ml) and PV(41%). When hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells(HSPC)are harvested for transplantation, either from the bone marrow or from mobilized blood, the graft contains a significant number of T cells. It is these T cells that are the major drivers of graft-vs-host disease(Gv HD). The risk for Gv HD can simply be reduced by the removal of these T cells from the graft. However, this is not always desirable, as this procedure also decreases the engraftment of the transplanted HSPCs and, if applicable, a graft-vs-tumor effect. This poses an important conundrum in the field: T cells act as a double-edged sword upon allogeneic HSPC transplantation, as they support engraftment of HSPCs and provide anti-tumor activity, but can also cause Gv HD. It has recently been suggested that T cells also enhance the engraftment of autologous HSPCs, thus supporting the notion that T cells and HSPCs have an important functional interaction that is highly beneficial, in particular during transplantation. The underlying reason on why and how T cells contribute to HSPC engraftment is still poorly understood. Therefore, we evaluate in this review the studies that have examined the role of T cells during HSPC transplantation and the possible mechanisms involved in their supporting function. Understanding the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms can provide new insight into improving HSPC engraftment and thus lower the number of HSPCs required during transplantation. Moreover, it could provide new avenues to limit the development of severe Gv HD, thus making HSPC transplantations more efficient and ultimately safer.

AIM： To examine the of the gastric, jejuna physiological aging. changes in the histomorphology and colonic wall of dogs due to METHODS： Full thickness biopsies were taken from the gastrointestinal tracts of 28 dogs of different ages. The thickness of the different layers of the wall was measured and the numbers of proliferating cells as indicated by immunohistochemical detection of Ki67 were counted. RESULTS： In the three excision sites, the thickness of all subepithelial layers increased with rising age. The strongest correlation between age and thickness of the intestinal wall was found in the first 10 years of life and in the jejunum （r =0.6-0.71 for the deep lamina propria mucosa, the muscularis mucosa, and the circular layer of the tunica muscularis）. The number of proliferating cells decreased during aging, with the strongest correlation in the lamina propria mucosa and lamina muscularis mucosa of the jejunum and in the colonic submucosa （r =-0.61 to -0.71）. Epithelial proliferation was only weakly correlated to the age. CONCLUSION： The morphology of the deeper layers and the proliferation of mesenchymal cells of the intestinal wall of healthy dogs are correlated with age. Gastrointestinal epithelial proliferation is only weakly age-correlated.

In recent years,femtosecond(fs)-lasers have evolved into a versatile tool for high precision micromachining of transparent materials because nonlinear absorption in the focus can result in refractive index modifications or material ***,when high pulse energies or low numerical apertures are required,nonlinear side effects such as self-focusing,filamentation or white light generation can decrease the modification *** this paper,we apply simultaneous spatial and temporal focusing(SSTF)to overcome these *** main advantage of SSTF is that the ultrashort pulse is only formed at the focal plane,thereby confining the intensity distribution strongly to the focal volume and suppressing detrimental nonlinear side ***,we investigate the optical breakdown within a water cell by pump-probe shadowgraphy,comparing conventional focusing and SSTF under equivalent focusing *** plasma formation is well confined for low pulse energies,2 mJ,but higher pulse energies lead to the filamentation and break-up of the disruptions for conventional focusing,thereby decreasing the modification *** contrast,plasma induced by SSTF stays well confined to the focal plane,even for high pulse energies up to 8 mJ,preventing extended filaments,side branches or break-up of the ***,while conventional focusing leads to broadband supercontinuum generation,only marginal spectral broadening is observed using *** experimental findings are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations of the nonlinear pulse propagation and interaction ***,SSTF appears to be a powerful tool to control the processing of transparent materials,e.g.,for precise ophthalmic fs-surgery.

Plague is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis Lehmann and Neumann,*** it is essentially a disease of rodents,plague can also be transmitted to ***,plague has caused mas-sive morbidity and mortality events in human populations,and has recently been classified as a reemerging dis-ease in many parts of the *** public health threat has led many countries to set up wild and domestic an-imal surveillance programs in an attempt to monitor plague activity that could potentially spill over into human *** China and the USA have plague surveillance programs in place,but the disease dynamics dif-fer in each *** present data on plague seroprevalence in wildlife and review different approaches for plague surveillance in the 2 *** need to better comprehend plague dynamics,combined with the fact that there are still several thousand human plague cases per year,make well-designed wildlife surveillance pro-grams a critical part of both understanding plague risks to humans and preventing disease outbreaks in the future.

Relationship of Soil Qualities to Maize Growth Under Increasing Phosphorus Supply in Acid Soils of Southern Cameroon

A large array of soil properties influences plant growth response to phosphorus(P) fertilizer input in acid soils. We carried out a pot experiment using three contrasted acid soils from southern Cameroon with the following main objectives:i) to assess the main soil causal factors of different maize(Zea mays L.) growth response to applied P and ii) to statistically model soil quality variation across soil types as well as their relationships to dry matter production. The soils used are classified as Typic Kandiudox(TKO) ,Rhodic Kandiudult(RKU) ,and Typic Kandiudult(TKU) . Analysis of variance,regression,and principal component analyses were used for data analysis and interpretation. Shoot dry matter yield(DMY) was significantly affected by soil type and P rate with no significant interaction. Predicted maximum attainable DMY was lowest in the TKO(26.2 g pot-1) as compared to 35.6 and 36.7 g pot-1 for the RKU and TKU,respectively. Properties that positively influenced DMY were the levels of inorganic NaHCO3-extractable P,individual basic cations(Ca,Mg,and K) ,and pH. Their effects contrasted with those of exchangeable Al and C/N ratio,which significantly depressed DMY. Principal component analysis yielded similar results,identifying 4 orthogonal components,which accounted for 84.7% of the total system variance(TSV) . Principal component 1 was identified as soil nutrient deficiency explaining 35.9% of TSV. This soil quality varied significantly among the studied soils,emerging as the only soil quality which significantly(P < 0.05) correlated with maize growth. The 2nd,3rd,and 4th components were identified as soil organic matter contents,texture,and HCl-extractable P,respectively.
