A database of modeled gridded dry deposition velocities for 45 gaseous species and three particle size ranges across North America

The dry deposition process refers to the flux loss of an atmospheric pollutant due to uptake of the pollutant by the earth’s *** deposition flux of a chemical species is typically calculated as the product of its surface-layer concentration and its dry deposition velocity(V_(d)).Field measurement based V_(d) data are very scarce or do not exist for many chemical species considered in chemistry transport *** the present study,gaseous and particulate dry deposition schemes were applied to generate a database of hourly V_(d) for 45 gaseous species and three particle size ranges for two years(2016–2017)at a 15 kmby 15 km horizontal resolution across North *** V_(d) of the 45 gaseous species ranged fromec across the whole domain,with chemical species-dependentmedian(mean)values being in the range of 0.018–1.37 cm/sec(0.05–1.43 cm/sec).The spatial distributions of the two-year average V_(d) showed values higher than 1–3 cm/sec for those soluble and reactive species over certain land *** species have the highest V_(d) over water surfaces,while insoluble but reactive species have the highest V_(d) over *** V_(d) of PM_(2.5) across the whole domain ranged from 0.039 to 0.75 cm/sec with median(mean)value of 0.18(0.20)cm s^(−1),while the mean V_(d) for PM_(2.5)–10 is twice that of PM_(2.5).Uncertainties in the modeled V_(d) are typically on the order of a factor of 2.0 or larger,which needs to be considered when applying the dataset in other studies.

Human pluripotent stem cell(h PSC)-derived progenies are immature versions of cells,presenting a potential limitation to the accurate modelling of diseases associated with maturity or ***,it is important to characterise how closely cells used in culture resemble their native *** order to select appropriate time points of retinal pigment epithelium(RPe)cultures that reflect native counterparts,we characterised the transcriptomic profiles of the h PSC-derived RPe cells from 1-and 12-month *** differentiated the human embryonic stem cell line H9 into RPe cells,performed single-cell RNA-sequencing of a total of 16,576 cells to assess themolecular changes of the RPe cells across these two culture time *** results indicate the stability of the RPe transcriptomic signature,with no evidence of an epithelial–mesenchymal transition,and with the maturing populations of the RPe observed with time in *** of Gene Ontology pathways revealed that as the cultures age,RPe cells upregulate expression of genes involved in metal binding and antioxidant *** might reflect an increased ability to handle oxidative stress as cells *** with native human RPe data confirms a maturing transcriptional profile of RPe cells in *** results suggest that long-term in vitro culture of RPe cells allows the modelling of specific phenotypes observed in native mature *** work highlights the transcriptional landscape of h PSC-derived RPe cells as they age in culture,which provides a reference for native and patient samples to be benchmarked against.

Predictive value of cytokines for developing complications after polytrauma

AIM: To investigate posttraumatic cytokine alterations and their value for predicting complications and mortality in polytraumatized patients. MeTHODS: Studies on the use of specific cytokines to predict the development of complications and mortality were identified in MeDLINe, eMBASe, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library. Of included studies, relevant data were extracted and study quality was ***: Forty-two studies published between 1988 and 2015 were identified, including 28 cohort studies and 14 "nested" case-control studies. Most studies investigated the cytokines interleukin(IL)-6, IL-8, IL-10 and tumor necrosis factor(TNF-a). IL-6 seems related to muliorgan dysfunction syndrome, multiorgan failure(MOF) and mortality; IL-8 appears altered in acute respiratory distress syndrome, MOF and mortality; IL-10 alterations seem to precede sepsis and MOF; and TNF-a seems related to MOF. CONCLUSION: Cytokine secretion patterns appear to be different for patients developing complications when compared to patients with uneventful posttraumatic course. More research is needed to strengthen the evidence for clinical relevance of these cytokines.

Many cities have pledged to achieve carbon *** urban water industry can also contribute its share to a carbon-neutral *** a multi-city time-series analysis approach,this study aims to assess the progress and lessons learned from the greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions management of urban water systems in four global cities:Amsterdam,Melbourne,New York City,and *** cities are advanced in setting GHG emissions reduction targets and reporting GHG emissions in their water *** four cities have reduced the GHG emissions in their water industries,compared with those from more than a decade ago(i.e.,the latest three-year moving averages are 13%–32%lower),although the emissions have“rebounded”multiple times over the *** emissions reductions were mainly due to various engineering opportunities such as solar and mini-hydro power generation,biogas valorization,sludge digestion and incineration optimization,and aeration system *** cities have recognized the many challenges in reaching carbon-neutrality goals,which include fluctuating water demand and rainfall,more carbon-intensive flood-prevention and water-supply strategies,meeting new air and water quality standards,and revising GHG emissions accounting *** study has also shown that it is difficult for the water industry to achieve carbon neutrality on its own.A collaborative approach with other sectors is needed when aiming toward the city’s carbon-neutrality *** an approach involves expanding the usual system boundary of the water industry to externally tap into both engineering and non-engineering opportunities.

Characterization of Water Quality in Xiao Xingkai Lake:Implications for Trophic Status and Management

Increasing cases of lake eutrophication globally have raised concerns among stakeholders,and particularly in *** the causes of eutrophication in waterways is essential for effective pollution prevention and *** Xingkai Lake is part of and connected to Xingkai(Khanka)Lake,a boundary lake between China and *** this study,we investigated the spatio-temporal variabilities in water quality(i.e.,dissolved oxygen(DO),total nitrogen(TN),total phosphorus(TP),chemical oxygen demand(CODMn)and ammonium-nitrogen(NH4+-N))in Xiao Xingkai Lake,from 2012 to 2014,after which a Trophic Level Index was used to evaluate trophic status,in addition to the factors influencing water quality variation in the *** DO,TN,TP,CODMn and NH4+-N concentrations were 0.44-15.57,0.16-5.11,0.01-0.45,0.16-48.31,and 0.19-0.78 mg/L,*** to the environmental Quality Standards for surface water(GB 3838-2002)in China,the lake transitioned to an oligotrophic status in 2013 and 2014 from a mesotrophic status in 2012,TN and TP concentrations were the key factors influencing water quality of Xiao Xingkai ***-para-metric test results showed that sampling time and sites had significant effects on water *** quality was worse in summer and in tourism and aquaculture areas,followed by agricultural drainage ***,lake water trophic status fluctuated between medium eutrophic and light eutrophic status from September 2012 to September 2014,and was negatively correlated with water *** quality in tourism and aquaculture sites were medium eutrophic,while in agricultural areas were light *** to the results,high water-level fluctuations and anthropogenic activities were the key factor driving variability in physicochemical parameters associated with water quality in Xiao Xingkai Lake.

Inocula selection in microbial fuel cells based on anodic biofilm abundance of Geobacter sulfurreducens

Microbial fuel cells （MFCs） rely on microbial conversion of organic substrates to electricity. The optimal perfor- mance depends on the establishment of a microbial community rich in electrogenic bacteria. Usually this micro- bial community is established from inoculation of the MFC anode chamber with naturally occurring mixed inocula. In this study, the electrochemical performance of MFCs and microbial community evolution were eval- uated for three inocula including domestic wastewater （DW）, lake sediment （LS） and biogas sludge （BS） with varying substrate loading （Lsub） and external resistance （Rext） on the MFC. The electrogenic bacterium Geobacter sulfurreducens was identified in all inocula and its abundance during MFC operation was positively linked to the MFC performance. The IS inoculated MFCs showed highest abundance （18% ± 1%） of G. sulfurreducens, maximum current density [Imax = （690 ± 30） mA.m 2] and coulombic efficiency （Ce = 29% ±1%） with acetate as the substrate./max and Ce increased to （1780 ± 30） mA.m-2 and 58%± 1%, respectively, after decreasing the Rext from 1000 Ωto 200 Ω, which also correlated to a higher abundance ofG. sulfurreducens （21% ±0.7%） on the MFC anodic biofilm. The data obtained contribute to understanding the microbial community response to Lsub and Roy, for of timizing electricity eneration in MFCs.

According to the National Company of Supplying(CONAB)in 2017 alone,the national production of acai pulp reached 219855 t,equating to 180 million dollar(USD).Almost 85%of the weight of fruit is constituted by residual biomass,even though researches have highlighted important applications for this biomass,most of it is discarded as organic ***,it is relevant to envisage in-depth studies about how to use these residues,particularly regarding the environmental impact of its target *** cellulose(CNC)and lignin are organic derivatives obtained through the physical-chemical treatment of lignocellulosic *** are abundant and currently considered as biopolymers because of their structural characteristics and their diverse applications in food and the medical *** work presents the mass yields achieved and the physical-chemical characteristics of the lignocellulosic derivatives extracted from the fiber of the acai berry.A statistical design was used to define the influence of process variables as temperature,reaction time and fiber size on the yield of these byproducts.A maximum yield close to 64%of type I CNC,with 45%of crystallinity degree was achieved at the minimum condition of temperature and fiber ***,through rheological analysis,it was possible to predict the nanocrystal aspect ratios,ranging from 71 to *** extracted lignin was rich in methoxy groups,p-coumaryl alcohol and p-coumaric acid,and its structural unit’s low state of aggregation can be an indication of low molecular weight,which envisions an appropriate use for this lignin to produce commodity chemicals.

In tropical areas,palm oil production generates significant amounts of waste,including palm kernel *** use of this waste in the civil engineering sector,presents a very challenging *** the present study,the production of lateritic soil(A-2 in GTR classification and A-7-6(9)in HRB classification)reinforced with palm kernel shells is *** order to improve their performances,these materials are mixed using the Fuller’s parabolic ***,experimental tests are used to characterize the physical and mechanical geotechnical properties of the lateritic *** characterizing the matrix(i.e.,lateritic soil)and the inclusions(i.e.,palm kernel shells)in their natural state,it is found that Avrankou’s lateritic soil has a high level of fine particles(56.6%),high plasticity(PI=21%)and low lift(ICBR=17%);which makes it unusable in the pavement *** also prove that the mixture composed of 39%of lateritic soil volume and 61%of PKS with a CBR index equals to 30 and the mixture composed of 45%of lateritic soil,40%PKS and 15%of lagoon sand with a CBR index equals to 41 can be used as sub-base layer for roads for low and medium traffic,respectively.

Management and outcome of hepatocellular adenoma with massive bleeding at presentation

To evaluate outcome of acute management and risk of rebleeding in patients with massive hemorrhage due to hepatocellular adenoma (HCA). MeTHODSThis retrospective cohort study included all consecutive patients who presented to our hospital with massive hemorrhage (grade II or III) due to ruptured HCA and were admitted for observation and/or intervention between 1999-2016. The diagnosis of HCA was based on radiological findings from contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or pathological findings from biopsy or resection of the HCA. Hemorrhage was diagnosed based on findings from computed tomography or MRI. Medical records were reviewed for demographic features, clinical presentation, tumor features, initial and subsequent management, short- and long-term complications and patient and lesion follow-up. ReSULTSAll patients were female (n = 23). Treatment in the acute phase consisted of embolization (n = 9, 39.1%), conservative therapy (n = 13, 56.5%), and other intervention (n = 1, 4.3%). Median hemoglobin level decreased significantly more on days 0-3 in the intervention group than in the patients initially treated conservatively (0.9 mmol/L vs 2.4 mmol/L respectively, P = 0.006). In total, 4 patients suffered severe short-term complications, which included hypovolemic shock, acute liver failure and abscess formation. After a median follow-up of 36 mo, tumor regression in non-surgically treated patients occurred with a median reduction of 76 mm down to 25 mm. Four patients underwent secondary (elective) treatment (i.e., tumor resection) to address HCA size of > 5 cm and/or desire for future pregnancy. One case of rebleeding was documented (4.3%). None of the patients experienced long-term complication (mean follow-up time: 36 mo). CONCLUSIONWith a 4.3% risk of rebleeding, secondary (elective) treatment of HCA after massive hemorrhage may only be considered in patients with persistent HCA > 5 cm.
