Elucidating galaxy assembly bias in SDSS

We investigate the level of galaxy assembly bias in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) main galaxy sample using ELUCID,a state-of-the-art constrained simulation that accurately reconstructed the initial density perturbations within the SDSS *** top of the ELUCID haloes,we develop an extended HOD model that includes the assembly bias of central and satellite galaxies,parameterized as Q_(cen)and Q_(sat),respectively,to predict a suite of one-and two-point *** particular,our fiducial constraint employs the probability distribution of the galaxy number counts measured on 8 h^(-1)Mpc scales n_8^(g) and the projected cross-correlation functions of quintiles of galaxies selected by n_(8)^(g) with our entire galaxy *** perform extensive tests of the efficacy of our method by fitting the same observables to mock data using both constrained and non-constrained *** discover that in many cases the level of cosmic variance between the two simulations can produce biased constraints that lead to an erroneous detection of galaxy assembly bias if the non-constrained simulation is *** applying our method to the SDSS data,the ELUCID reconstruction effectively removes an otherwise strong degeneracy between cosmic variance and galaxy assembly bias in SDSS,enabling us to derive an accurate and stringent constraint on the *** fiducial ELUCID constraint,for galaxies above a stellar mass threshold M_(*)=10^(10.2)h^(-2)M_(⊙),is Q_(cen)=-0.09±0.05 and Q_(sat)=0.09±0.10,indicating no evidence for a significant (>2σ) galaxy assembly bias in the local Universe probed by ***,our method provides a promising path to the robust modelling of the galaxy-halo connection within future surveys like DESI and PFS.

Background Pediatric cancer survivors are at increased risk of muscle weakness and low areal bone mineral density(aBMD).However,the prevalence of muscle strength deficits is not well documented,and the associations of muscle strength with aBMD are unknown in this ***,this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of upper-and lower-body muscle strength deficits and to examine the associations of upper-and lower-body muscle strength with age-,sex,and race-specific aBMD Z-scores at the total body,total hip,femoral neck,and lumbar *** This cross-sectional study included 116 pediatric cancer survivors(12.1±3.3 years old,mean±SD;42.2%female).Upper-and lower-body muscle strength were assessed by handgrip and standing long jump test,***‑energy X‑ray absorptiometry was used to measure aBMD(g/cm2).Associations between muscle strength and aBMD were evaluated in multivariable linear regression *** regression was used to evaluate the contribution of muscle strength(1-decile lower)to the odds of having low aBMD(Z-score≤1.0).All analyses were adjusted for time from treatment completion,radiotherapy exposure,and body mass *** More than one-half of survivors were within the 2 lowest deciles for upper-(56.9%)and lower-body muscle strength(60.0%)in comparison to age-and sex-specific reference *** strength deficits were associated with lower aBMD Z-scores at all sites(B=0.133–0.258,p=0.001–0.032).Each 1-decile lower in upper-body muscle strength was associated with 30%–95%higher odds of having low aBMD Z-scores at all *** 1-decile lower in lower-body muscle strength was associated with 35%–70%higher odds of having low aBMD Z-scores at total body,total hip,and femoral *** Muscle strength deficits are prevalent in young pediatric cancer survivors,and such deficits are associated with lower aBMD Z-scores at all *** results suggest that interventions designed to improve muscle strength in t

Role of climatic variability in shaping intraspecific variation of thermal tolerance in Mediterranean water beetles

The climatic variability hypothesis(CVH)predicts that organisms in more thermally variable environments have wider thermal breadths and higher thermal plasticity than those from more stable ***,due to evolutionary trade-offs,taxa with greater absolute thermal limits may have little plasticity of such limits(trade-off hypothesis).The CVH assumes that climatic variability is the ultimate driver of thermal tolerance variation across latitudinal and altitudinal gradients,but average temperature also varies along such *** explored intraspecific variation of thermal tolerance in three typical Mediterranean saline water beetles(families Hydrophilidae and Dytiscidae).For each species,we compared two populations where the species coexist,with similar annual mean temperature but contrasting thermal variability(continental *** population).We estimated thermal limits of adults from each population,previously acclimated at 17,20,or 25℃.We found species-specific patterns but overall,our results agree with the CVH regarding thermal ranges,which were wider in the continental(more variable)*** the two hydrophilid species,this came at the cost of losing plasticity of the upper thermal limit in this population,supporting the trade-off hypothesis,but not in the dytiscid *** results support the role of local adaptation to thermal variability and trade-offs between basal tolerance and physiological plasticity in shaping thermal tolerance in aquatic ectotherms,but also suggest that intraspecific variation of thermal tolerance does not fit a general pattern among aquatic *** such intraspecific variation could lead to inaccurate predictions of the vulnerability of aquatic insects to global warming.

Seismic attribute and well-log analysis for channel characterization in the upper San andres and Grayburg formations of the Midland Basin,Texas

The Permian Basin is one of the most prolific,and currently one of the most active,oil and gas basins in the *** Lower Permian strata in the Permian Basin have produced more than 14 billion barrels of oil(BBO),making it the largest volume of hydrocarbon in the *** in the Midland Basin during late Leonardian through early Guadalupian(ca.272e269 Ma)resulted in progradation of shelf edge and ultimately closure of the basin by Middle Permian *** analyzed a merged seismic survey covering parts of the Permian Basin(i.e.,Central Basin Platform and Midland Basin)in Andrews,Ector,and Midland Counties,*** seismic survey and well logs show the presence of gently dipping(ca.1°)clinoforms in the Upper San andres and Grayburg Formations on the eastern edge of the Central Basin Platform and western Midland *** seismic attributes,curvature,and spectral decomposition identify low sinuosity slope channels oriented north-south,but such channels do not appear beyond the *** shelf edge shifts from north to south during deposition of the Upper San andres and Grayburg *** identify five basinward shifts noted by the migration of the shelf edge toward the basin center and the presence of channel features along the depositional *** petrophysical analysis indicates that channels cut into carbonate rocks and are filled by siliciclastic sediments;this interpretation is supported by the most negative curvature anomalies along the channel axes caused by the differential compaction between the carbonate and siliciclastic *** are a few channels with a northwest-southeast strike,which matches the direction of the Concho Lineament observed by satellite *** observations are consistent with previous interpretations of the northern Midland Basin closure during Middle-Late Permian time.

Introduction: The severity of Sars-Cov-2 infection is associated with the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The progression to ARDS appears to be driven by a major inflammatory mechanism potentially sensitive to corticosteroids. Observation: This article describes the case of an elderly patient was admitted to emergency departments for intense asthenia, accompanied by motor diarrhoea, dyspnoea with desaturation in ambient air, in a context of strong suspicion of infection linked to COVID-19. The article also reviews the existing literature on the diagnosis and treatment of this severe form of the disease. Conclusion: Corticosteroids, and in particular dexamethasone, have been shown to be effective in the management of patients with COVID-19, an oxygen-releasing disease.

We propose a resistors,inductors and capacitors(RLC)electrical circuit to theoretically analyze and fully simulate a new type of non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger(SSH)model with complex *** formulate its construction and investigate its properties by taking advantage of the circuit’s *** physical properties can be identified in this system from the normal modes of oscillation of the RLC circuit,including the highly tunable bulk-edge correspondence between topological winding numbers and edge states and the non-Hermitian skin phenomenon originating from a novel complex energy plane *** present study is able to show the wide and appealing topological physics inherent to electric circuits,which is readily generalizable to a plenty of both Hermitian and non-Hermitian nontrivial systems.

Biaxial versus uniaxial strain tuning of single-layer MoS_(2)

Strain engineering has arisen as a powerful technique to tune the electronic and optical properties of twod imensional semiconductors like molybdenum disulfide(MoS_(2)).Although several theoretical works predicted that biaxial strain would be more effective than uniaxial strain to tune the band structure of MoS_(2),a direct experimental verification is still missing in the *** we implemented a simple experimental setup that allows to apply biaxial strain through the bending of a cruciform polymer *** used the setup to study the effect of biaxial strain on the differential reflectance spectra of 12 single-layer MoS_(2)flakes finding a redshift of the excitonic features at a rate between-40 meV/%and-110 meV/%of biaxial *** also directly compare the effect of biaxi al and uniaxial strain on the same single-layer MoS_(2)finding that the biaxial strain gauge factor is 2.3 times larger than the uniaxial strain one.
