Visual communication in social play of a hierarchical carnivore species:the case of wild spotted hyenas

Communication relies on signals that can be produced via different sensory modalities to modify receivers’*** social interactions,the possibility to perceive subtle visual cues enhances the use of facial expressions to exchange *** of the most appropriate fields to explore the specific design features of visual signals is play ***,we explored the production and potential role of Relaxed Open Mouth(ROM)and Head Bobbing(HB)in regulating play fighting of wild spotted hyenas Crocuta crocuta,a highly hierarchical carnivore *** accordance with the assumptions of the signal optimization theory,wild hyenas produced ROM and HB almost exclusively when the sender was in direct visual contact with the receiver thus suggesting that senders were attentive to the playmates’*** to HB,the sequential analysis revealed that ROM often anticipated offensive patterns such as play biting thus supporting the hypothesis that ROM,but not HB,is a metacomunicative ***,when the offensive patterns were biased toward one of the 2 players,the session was punctuated by a higher number of *** findings support the general hypothesis that these 2 visual signals can play different roles in the management of play fighting in this carnivore *** complementary use of ROM and HB would suggest that spotted hyenas are highly competent and fast in processing facial displays of different nature to correctly“read others’intentions”and respond with appropriate motor actions to avoid misunderstanding during one of the most multifaceted and risky social interaction.

In astrophysics, the boundary conditions for plasma phenomena are provided by nature and the astronomer faces the problem of understanding them from a variety of observations [Hester J J et al 1996 Astrophys. J. 456 225], on the other hand, in laboratory plasma experiments the electromagnetic boundary conditions become a major problem in the set-up of the machine that produces the plasma, an issue that has to be investigated step by step and to be modified and adapted with great patience, in particular in the case of an innovative plasma confinement experiment. The PROTO-SPHERA machine [Alladio F et al 2006 Nucl. Fusion 46 S613] is a magnetic confinement experiment, that emulates in the laboratory the jet + torus plasma configurations often observed in astrophysics: an inner magnetized jet of plasma centered on the(approximate) axis of symmetry and surrounded by a magnetized plasma torus orthogonal to this jet. The PROTO-SPHERA plasma is simply connected, i.e., no metal current conducting rod is linked to the plasma torus, while instead it is the inner magnetized plasma jet(in the following always called the plasma centerpost) that is linked to the torus. It is mandatory that no spurious plasma current path modifies the optimal shape of the plasma centerpost. Moreover, as the plasma torus is produced and sustained, in absence of any applied inductive electric field, by the inner plasma centerpost through magnetic reconnections [Taylor J B and Turner M F 1989 *** 29 219], it is required as well that spurious current paths do not surround the torus on its outboard, in order not to lower the efficiency of the magnetic reconnections that maintain the plasma torus at the expense of the plasma centerpost. Boundary conditions have been corrected,up to the point that the first sustainment in steady state has been achieved for the combined plasma.

Reconstructing hourly residential electrical load profiles for Renewable Energy Communities using non-intrusive machine learning techniques

The successful implementation of Renewable Energy Communities(RECs)involves maximizing the self-consumption within a community,particularly in regulatory contexts in which shared energy is *** many countries,the absence of a metering infrastructure that provides data at an hourly or sub-hourly resolution level for low-voltage users(e.g.,residential and commercial users)makes the design of a new energy community a challenging *** study proposes a non-intrusive machine learning methodology that can be used to generate residential electrical consumption profiles at an hourly resolution level using only monthly consumption data(i.e.,billed energy),with the aim of estimating the energy shared by *** proposed methodology involves three phases:first,identifying the typical load patterns of residential users through k-Means clustering,then implementing a Random Forest algorithm,based on monthly energy bills,to identify typical load patterns and,finally,reconstructing the hourly electrical load profile through a data-driven rescaling *** effectiveness of the proposed methodology has been evaluated through an REC case study composed by 37 residential users powered by a 70 kWp photovoltaic *** Normalized Mean Absolute Error(NMAE)and the Normalized Root Mean Squared Error(NRMSE)were evaluated over an entire year and whenever the energy was shared within the *** Relative Absolute Error was also measured when estimating the shared energy at both a monthly(MRAE)and at an annual basis.(RAE).A comparison between the REC load profile reconstructed using the proposed methodology and the real load profile yielded an overall NMAE of 20.04%,an NRMSE of 26.17%,and errors of 18.34%and 23.87%during shared energy timeframes,***,our model delivered relative absolute errors for the estimation of the shared energy at a monthly and annual scale of 8.31%and 0.12%,respectively.

Objective: To evaluate transperineal laser ablation (TPLA) with Echolaser® (Echolaser® TPLA, Elesta S.p.A., Calenzano, Italy) as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer (PCa) using the Delphi consensus ***: Italian and international experts on BPH and PCa participated in a collaborative consensus project. During two rounds, they expressed their opinions on Echolaser® TPLA for the treatment of BPH and PCa answering online questionnaires on indications, methodology, and potential complications of this technology. Level of agreement or disagreement to reach consensus was set at 75%. If the consensus was not achieved, questions were modified after each round. A final round was performed during an online meeting, in which results were discussed and ***: Thirty-two out of forty invited experts participated and consensus was reached on all topics. Agreement was achieved on recommending Echolaser® TPLA as a treatment of BPH in patients with ample range of prostate volume, from 80 mL (80%), comorbidities (100%), antiplatelet or anticoagulant treatment (96%), indwelling catheter (77%), and strong will of preserving ejaculatory function (100%). Majority of respondents agreed that Echolaser® TPLA is a potential option for the treatment of localized PCa (78%) and recommended it for low-risk PCa (90%). During the final round, experts concluded that it can be used for intermediate-risk PCa and it should be proposed as an effective alternative to radical prostatectomy for patients with strong will of avoiding urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction. Almost all participants agreed that the transperineal approach of this organ-sparing technique is safer than transrectal and transurethral approaches typical of other techniques (97% of agreement among experts). Vertical GaN power MOSFET is a novel technology that offers great potential for power switching *** still in an early development phase,vertical GaN devices are yet to be fully optimized and require careful studies to foster their *** this work,we report on the physical insights into device performance improvements obtained during the development of vertical GaN-on-Si trench MOSFETs(TMOS’s)provided by TCAD simulations,enhancing the dependability of the adopted process optimization ***,two different TMOS devices are compared in terms of transfer-curve hysteresis(H)and subthreshold slope(SS),showing a≈75%H reduction along with a≈30%SS *** allow attributing the achieved improvements to a decrease in the border and interface traps,respectively.A sensitivity analysis is also carried out,allowing to quantify the additional trap density reduction required to minimize both figures of merit.
