Egg-spot matching in common cuckoo parasitism of the oriental reed warbler: effects of host nest availability and egg rejection

Background: The success of cuckoo parasitism is thought to depend largely on the extent of egg matching between cuckoo and host eggs, since poor-matching cuckoo egg would lead to more frequent egg rejection by the host. In this study, we investigated how egg-spot matching between the Common Cuckoo(Cuculus canorus) and its host, the Oriental Reed Warbler(Acrocephalus orientalis) is affected by the local parasitism rate, nest availability in breeding synchronization and egg ***: We used the paired design of parasitized and their nearest non-parasitized nests where breeding occurred simultaneously to compare egg-spot matching. The image analysis was used to compare four eggshell pattern variables, namely spot size, density, coverage on the different areas of egg surface, and the distribution on the whole egg surface. Egg recognition experiments were conducted to test the effect of egg spots on egg rejection by the ***: Our results show that much better matching in almost all spot parameters tested on the side of the egg and the spot distribution on the whole egg occurred in parasitized nests than in non-parasitized nests. Matching of spot density between cuckoo and host eggs in parasitized nests increased with the synchronization between temporal availability of nests and the egg-laying period of female cuckoos. Egg recognition experiments in which the warbler eggs were deliberately painted with extra spots led to a significantly higher egg rejection rate(78.3%) than of unpainted ***: Our data suggest that both the high temporal encounter rate between cuckoo and warbler nests as well as the high egg rejection ability of the host are important factors for egg-spot matching of the cuckoos.

染料脱色过氧化物酶(DyP-type过氧化物酶)是含有亚铁血红素,能降解各种有毒染料的一类蛋白。为了研究运动发酵单胞菌Zymomonas mobilis ZM4(ATCC 31821)中一种新的DyP-type过氧化物酶的特点和功能,以***基因组DNA为模板,通过PCR扩增目的基因,克隆到大肠杆菌表达载体pET-21b(+)中。通过ZmDyP与其他DyP-type过氧化物酶的比对,发现它们存在着共同保守氨基酸D149、R239、T254、F256和GXXDG结构基序,说明ZmDyP是Dyp-type过氧化物酶家族的一个新成员。经IPTG诱导大肠杆菌中pET21b(+)-ZmDyP表达,并将表达的酶进行金属螯合层析纯化。SDS-PAGE分析表明,纯酶分子量为36 kDa,而活性染色显示分子量为108 kDa,表明该酶在活性状态下可能是一个三聚体。光谱扫描显示ZmDyP有一个典型的亚铁血红素吸收峰,说明它是含有亚铁血红素的蛋白。对ZmDyP性质进行了研究,发现以2,2-二氨-双(3-乙基苯并噻唑-6-磺酸)ABTS为底物,ZmDyP表现出更高的转化效率。这些研究结果丰富了DyP-type过氧化物酶家族信息,并且为ZmDyP的结构功能和反应机制研究奠定了基础。

As the lightest structural metal and one of the most abundant metallic elements on earth, magnesium(Mg) has been used as an "industrial metal" for lightweighting in the transportation and electronics industries, in addition to other traditional applications in aluminum alloying,steel desulfurization and protective anodes. In recent years, research has shown significant potential for Mg to become a "technology metal"in a variety of new applications from energy storage/battery to biomedical products. However, global Mg production has shown steady but moderate growth in the last three decades. Mg applications as an industry metal are still limited due to some sustainability concerns of primary Mg production, as well as a number of technical issues related to the structural and corrosion performance of commercial Mg *** Mg applications as an industrial or technology metal face tremendous technical challenges, which have been reflected in the intensified global research efforts in the last twenty years. This paper will review some past and present applications, and discuss future opportunities and challenges for Mg research and applications for the global Mg community.

Preparation and evaluation of nano-hydroxyapatite/poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) porous microsphere for aspirin carrier

A novel vehicle for the delivery of aspirin (ASA) was prepared from porous nano-hydroxyapatite/poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) [nano-HAP/P(St-DVB)] composite microspheres by grafting nano-HAP [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] onto porous P(St-DVB) microspheres. Four types of porous composite microspheres were prepared, each with different nano-HAP contents. The ASA-loaded composite microspheres prepared with 10% and 15% nano-HAP (mass ratio) exhibited excellent buoyancy with relatively short instantaneous floating time (within 10 min) and a long sustained floating time (12 h) in simulated gastric juice. They also offered good sustained release of ASA (up to 8 h). Furthermore, these composite microspheres displayed good buffering capacity that prevented the buildup of acidity caused by hydrolysis of ASA, keeping the pH of gastric juice within the normal range (pH 0.9 to 1.5). The results showed that porous nano-HAP/P(St-DVB) composite microspheres prepared with 10% and 15% nano-HAP could be used as a novel drug carrier for ASA, providing a sustained release dose without leading to stomach irritation, a side effect that is often associated with ASA medication.

Hedgehog(HH)信号通路在胚胎发育和器官形成中发挥重要作用。当该通路中成员发生异常如patched(PTCH)发生缺失或突变,smoothened(SMO)发生突变,Gli异常扩增或者蛋白质稳定性增加等,都会导致该通路异常激活,并诱导如基底细胞癌、成神经管细胞瘤等癌症发生。因此阻断HH信号通路是应用于癌症治疗的一个有效手段。目前以HH信号通路不同成员为靶点已开发出多种HH信号通路小分子抑制剂,其中以HH信号通路上游成员为靶点的抑制剂最多。在今后的研究中,应该更加注重于以HH信号通路下游为靶点,开发更加有效的抗癌药物。
