The performance of industrial waste incineration bottom ash in controlled low-strength material （CLSM） was investigated in this paper, as the quarry dust was added. CLSM mixtures were made from the industrial waste incineration bottom ash, quarry dust, and cement. Tests for fresh density, bleeding, compressive strength, shear strength, hydraulic conductivity, and excavatability were carried out. The com- pressive strength ranges from 60 kPa to 6790 kPa, the friction angle varies from 5°to 19°, and the cohesion is from 4 to 604 kPa. Most of the mixtures are found to be non-excavatable. It is indicated that the quarry dust addition increases the compressive strength and shear parame- ters, decreases bleeding, and increases the removability modulus.

Objective:To study disseminated cryptococcal infection in a tertiary care hospital in Southern ***:The clinical profile of 12 disseminated cryptococcosis patients with the age group of 28-52 years was retrospectively ***:7(58.3%) presented with fever 30 days whereas 2(16.7%) did not have *** the 12(100%) had headache. 2(16.7%) had altered sensorium,one(8%) seizure.5(41.7%) had diarrhea and vomiting.6(50%) had oral candidiasis,and anemia.9(75%) had elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR).6(50%) had neck *** fluid(CSF) pressure was elevated in all 12(100%) patients. Blood culture positive for Cryptococcus neqformans(***) in 11(91.7%) and CSF culture positive in all 12(100%),one(8%) had urine culture *** ink preparation was positive in 10(83.3%).CD4 count was less than 50/microl in 4(33.3%),between 50-100 in 6(50%) and 2(16.7%) in the range of 100-200.6(50%) were treated with parenteral amphotericin B(0.7 mg/kg/d) during intensive phase followed by oral fluconazole 400 mg/d for 8 weeks then maintenance oral fluconazole 200 mg/d.5(41.6%) were treated with fluconazole alone.8(66.7%) improved and 4(33.3%) patients *** those who succumbed to the illness,2(16.7%) received amphotericin and fluconazole,2(16.7%) patients received fluconazole ***:Disseminated cryptococcosis can cause considerable mortality in HIV patients and immunocompromised non- HIV *** times,its presentation closely mimics that of *** diagnosis and appropriate treatment should be started as early as possible.

Celiac disease(CD) is now recognized as a common disorder among Middle Eastern(ME) and North African(NA) *** aim of this review is to assess the available data regarding CD in the ME and NA and to compare this information with that of Western countries.A literature review was performed using the electronic databases PubMed and Medline(1950-2008) as search engines,and "celiac disease" was used as a Mesh *** search was limited to ME and NA *** prevalence of CD in ME and NA countries among low risk populations is similar to that of Western countries,but is higher in high risk populations such as those with type 1 *** is underestimated because of lack of clinical suspicion and lack of patient *** presentations in term of gastrointestinal,hematologic,skeletal,and liver manifestations are similar between both populations except for a high prevalence of short stature in some ME and NA *** studies have addressed atypical or silent *** in the West,diagnosis is initially made by serological tests and is confirmed by small intestinal ***-free diet is the main mode of treatment with a higher apparent adherence rate than in the *** disease complications result from *** disease is strongly associated with HLA DQ2 and to a lesser extent with HLA DQ8 *** conclusion,CD prevalence is underestimated,with little data available about its malignant *** parameters in the ME and NA are otherwise similar to those in Western countries.

Neurobrucellosis is a rare form of localized brucellosis usually with no systemic manifestations. We report a rare case of brucellosis presenting as meningoencephalitis associated with *** patient had a lymphocytic predominant CSF and was initially treated with empirical anti tubercular therapy and steroids.A week later,when his CSF culture grew Brucella species,the treatment was changed to a combination of streptomycin,doxycycline and rifampicin and the patient improved with this *** case illustrates the need to consider neurobrucellosis as a close differential diagnosis of neurotuberculosis in endemic areas when the patient presents with meningo encephalitis with lymphocytic CSF.

AIM:To investigate the clinical features and survival of patients treated for cholangiocarcinoma in our institution and to analyze the factors affecting their ***:This retrospective cohort study assessed patients diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma between January 1997 and December 2007 at the University Malaya Medical Centre in *** clinical data and associated outcomes were collected using a structured ***:Of the 69 patients diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma,38 (55%) were male;mean patient age was 61 *** patients (17%) had intrahepatic,38 (55%) had perihilar and 19 (28%) had distal *** 12 patients underwent curative surgery,including seven R0 *** one patient died within 30 d after *** overall median survival was 4 mo,whereas the median survival of R0 resected patients was 16 *** overall 1-,2-and 3-year cumulative survival rates were 67%,17% and 17%,*** rates were significantly associated with curative resection (P=0.002),intrahepatic tumor (P=0.003),negative margin status (P=0.013),early tumor stage (P=0.016),higher tumor differentiation (P=0.032) and absence of jaundice (P=0.038).Multivariate analysis showed that tumor location was a significant independent predictor of patient ***:Curative,margin-negative resection of early stage,well-differentiated intrahepatic tumors is associated with improved patient survival.

Candida species have been associated with the emergence of strains resistant to selected antifungal agents. Plant products have been used traditionally as alternative medicine to ease mucosal fungal infections. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Piper betle extract on the growth profile and the ultrastructure of commonly isolated oral candidal cells. The major component of Po betle was identified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrophotometry （LC-MS/MS）. Seven ATCC control strains of Candida species were cultured in yeast peptone dextrose broth under four different growth environments：（i） in the absence of P. betle extract; and in the presence of P. beUeextract at respective concentrations of （ii） 1 ***-1; （iii） 3 ***-1; and （iv） 6 ***- 1 The growth inhibitory responses of the candidal cells were determined based on changes in the specific growth rates （μ）. Scanning electron microscopy （SEM） was used to observe any ultrastructural alterations in the candida colonies. LC-MS/MS was performed to validate the presence of bioactive compounds in the extract. Following treatment, it was observed that the p-values of the treated cells were significantly different than those of the untreated cells （P〈0.05）, indicating the fungistatic properties of the P. beUe extract. The candidal population was also reduced from an average of 13.44× 10^6 to 1.78×10^6 viable cell counts （CFU）.mL-1, SEM examination exhibited physical damage and considerable morphological alterations of the treated cells. The compound profile from LC-MS/MS indicated the presence of hydroxybenzoic acid, chavibetol and hydroxychavicol in P. betle extract. The effects of P. betle on candida cells could potentiate its antifungal activity.

Mitogen-activated protein kinases(MAPKs) are the main regulators of cellular proliferation, growth, and survival in physiological or pathological conditions. Aberrant MAPK signaling plays a pivotal role in carcinogenesis, which leads to development and progression of human cancer. Dual-specificity phosphatase 6(DUSP6), a member of the MAPK phosphatase family, interacts with specifically targeted extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 via negative feedback regulation in the MAPK pathway of mammalian cells. This phosphatase functions in a dual manner, pro-oncogenic or tumor-suppressive, depending on the type of cancer. To date, the tumor-suppressive role of DUSP6 has been demonstrated in pancreatic cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, esophageal squamous cell and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and ovarian cancer. Its pro-oncogenic role has been observed in human glioblastoma, thyroid carcinoma, breast cancer, and acute myeloid carcinoma. Both roles of DUSP6 have been documented in malignant melanoma depending on the histological subtype of the cancer. Loss-or gain-of-function effects of DUSP6 in these cancers highlights the significance of this phosphatase in carcinogenesis. Development of methods that use the DUSP6 gene as a therapeutic target for cancer treatment or as a prognostic factor for diagnosis and evaluation of cancer treatment outcome has great potential. This review focuses on molecular characteristics of the DUSP6 gene and its role in cancers in the purview of development, progression, and cancer treatment outcome.

AIM:To study the presence of Helicobacter pylori(***) virulence factors and clinical outcome in *** infected ***:A prospective analysis of ninety nine ***-positive patients who underwent endoscopy in our Endoscopy suite were included in this *** was isolated from antral biopsy samples and the presence of cagA,iceA,and iceA2 genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction and a reverse hybridization *** for *** infection was performed in all patients using the rapid urease test(CLO-Test).RESULTS:From a total of 326 patients who underwent endoscopy for upper gastrointestinal symptoms,99 patients were determined to be *** ulceration was seen in 33 patients(33%).The main virulence strain observed in this cohort was the cagA gene isolated in 43 *** was associated with peptic ulcer pathology in 39.5%(17/43) and in 28%(16/56) of non-ulcer ***1 was present in 29 patients(29%) and iceA2 in 15 patients(15%).Ulcer pathology was seen in 39%(11/29) of patients with iceA1,while 31%(22/70) had normal *** corresponding values for iceA2 were 33%(5/15) and 33%(28/84),***:Virulence factors were not common in our *** incidence of factors cagA,iceA1 and iceA2 were very low although variations were noted in different ethnic groups.
