One-pot chemical activation and pyrolysis process was developed for biochar production from red macroalgae residue of Gelidium *** macroalgae residue was activated by various catalysts(KOH,NaOH,H_(3)PO_(4),and CH_(4)ON_(2))with the two concentrations(2.5 wt%and 5 wt%)using a pulverization system followed by slow pyrolysis at 500℃.The activated biochars showed a porous morphology with an increase of water holding capacity compared to the unactivated *** properties of activated biochar observed by further characterization(i.e.,FTIR,SEM,TGA)revealed their feasibility to be used as an *** results of adsorption experiment confirmed that adsorption was dependent not only on the surface area but also on the surface charge,and functional *** sorption performance of activated biochars(AcBC),in terms of the adsorption of methylene blue,was comparable to commercial activated charcoal(Norit^(■)).NaOH(2.5 wt%)-activated biochar had the removal efficiency of 87%versus 97%for commercial activated charcoal.

A practical system of metals-(2,4-pentanedionate) (M(acac)n (M= Fe, Zn, Co and V)) and P2O5 in the pres- ence of HNO3 catalyzes regioselective nitration of ar-himachalene 1 to mono-nitro-ar-himachalene 2 in mod- erate to high yields. Under mild conditions, the selectivity of nitration of 1 to 2 is excellent compared to the classical method using the nitro-sulphuric mixture HNO3/H2SO4, both mono- and di-nitro-ar-himachalene 2 and 3 are obtained. The reaction offers a very good method for the preparation of nitro-aromatic compounds and provides a useful entry to new functionalized terpenic products.

Relation between serum progranulin, inflammatory markers and visceral fat in childhood obesity

Aim: To study serum progranulin (PGRN) level in children with obesity and its relationship to inflamamatory markers and visceral fat. Methods: Fifty obese children and 50 controls aged 10-18 years were recruited. Demographic, anthropometric and biochemical features were collected according to a standard protocol. Serum progranulin levels, serum IL-6 and hsCRP were measured using elISA. Insulin resistance was calculated by the homeostasis model (HOMA-IR) using the following formula: HOMA-IR = fasting insulin (mU/L) × fasting glucose (mmoL/L)/ 22.5. The maximum visceral fat thickness (VFT) and the minimum subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) were measured by ultrasonography. Results: In the obese group, a significant increase was found in serum PGRN (48.87 ± 42.33 ng/mL) compared to control group (30.18 ± 23.82 ng/mL). Progranulin correlated significantly with VFT (r = 0.475), IL6 (r = 0.368), Insulin(r = 0.440) and HOMA-IR (r = 0.379). The mean serum progranulin in the high tertile VFT group was significantly higher than those in the low tertile and middle tertile groups (P = 0.030 and P = 0.039 respectively). VFT was highly positively correlated to progranulin, SFT, IL6, insulin, HOMA-IR and hsCRP (P = 0.001, 0.000, 0.001, 0.001, 0.003 and 0.003). However, the correlation coefficient between SFT and progranulin was insignificant. Summary: we demonstrated for the first time that serum PGRN concentrations increased in Egyptian obese children. The concentrations of serum PGRN correlated closely with visceral fat and IL6. Conclusion: PGRN may contribute to the pathogenesis of chronic inflammation in obesity. It could be a novel marker of visceral fat in obesity. Thus PGRN could be a potential therapeutic target for management of chronic inflammation in obesity.

An Integrated Model of Job Involvement, Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment: A Structural Analysis in Jordan’s Banking Sector

The purpose of this research is to investigate the interrelationships among the three behavioural constructs of job involvement, job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Accordingly, a structural model is developed to delineate the interactions among these constructs and explore the mediating effect of job satisfaction on the relationship between job involvement and organizational commitment. A questionnaire-based survey was designed to test the aforementioned model based on a dataset of 315 employees working in twelve out of twenty six banks operating in the capital city of Jordan, Amman. The model and posited hypotheses were tested using structural equation modelling analysis. The results indicated that job involvement positively and significantly affects job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Additionally, job satisfaction proved to be positively related to organizational commitment. Furthermore, job satisfaction positively and significantly partially mediated the relationship between job involvement and organizational commitment.

Patterns and Changes in the Treatment of Patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus in Egypt: The DISCOVER Program

The DISCOVER study is a three-year, non-interventional prospective study conducted in 37 countries, including Egypt, to assess the treatment patterns and outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus initiating a second-line antidiabetic therapy (add-on or switch). In this report of the Egyptian cohort of DISCOVER, baseline data were collected according to routine clinical practice at 38 study sites, using a standardized electronic case report form, in the period from December-2014 to November-2019. We enrolled 583 patients (mean age: 52.9 ± 9.8 years and median duration since diagnosis: median 36.5, IQR 18.1, 70.4 months). The mean HbA1c value at baseline was 8.6 ± 1.4%, indicating poor glycemic control. The most commonly prescribed first-line medications were metformin or sulfonylurea monotherapy. For second line-therapy, the majority of patients switched to dual therapy with metformin plus sulfonylureas or DPP-4 inhibitors. Fewer patients switched to triple therapy, treatment by four or more medications, or insulin treatment (15, 12, and 35 patients, respectively). The most commonly cited reasons for switching to second-line therapy were lack of efficacy, weight gain, hypoglycemic events, and side effects (549, 54, 25, and 21 patients, respectively). The set treatment target of enrolled patients at the initiation of second-line therapy was an HbA1c level of 6.9%. Follow-up data will assess the outcomes of such changes in the Egyptian population.

A Validated High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (Hptlc) Method for the Quantitative Determination of Tricin in Two <i>Spergularia</i>Species

A simple, sensitive, precise and robust high-performance thin-layer chromatographic (HPTLC) method for analysis of tricin has been developed and validated for the determination of tricin in genus Spergularia. Analysis of tricin was performed on pre-coated TLC aluminum plates with silica gel as the stationary phase. Linear ascending development was carried out in double twin trough glass chamber saturated with a mobile phase consisting of chloroform: methanol (37:3 v/v). Spectro-densitometric scanning was performed by TLC scanner III (CAMAG) in absorbance mode at the wavelength of 270 nm. The system was found to give compact spots for tricin (Rf value of 0.34 ± 0.04). The linear regression analysis data for the calibration plots showed a good linear relationship with r2 = 0.9981 in the concentration range 2-15 μl with respect to peak area. According to the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines, the method was validated for precision, recovery, and robustness. The tricin content quantified from Spergularia marina and S. daiandra was found to be 0.398 mg/100g and 1.642 mg/100g fresh weight, respectively. Statistical analysis of the data showed that the method is reproducible and selective for the estimation of tricin.

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare inflammatory disease involving essentially cartilaginous structures. Other systemic manifestations can be encountered as the eye and ear disturbance. Aortic aneurysms affect few cases. If affection of airway cartilages occurs, prognosis may be worsened by eventual stenotic lesions. We report a 22-year-old woman with Relapsing polychondritis. When she was referred to our hospital 4 weeks after the onset of respiratory symptoms, she was having severe breathing difficulty. Immediate tracheostomy followed by steroid therapy improved her respiratory condition, although the treatment was complicated because of her diabetes. While airway involvement of Relapsing polychondritis can be life threatening, it is curable with steroid therapy. Clinicians should keep in mind that airway obstruction could be caused by this disease.

Primary non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma of the thyroid gland was rarely described. We report the case of a 44-year-old man admitted for an anterior neck swelling, hoarseness and dyspnea. The chest radiograph showed a trachea deviation. He had no clinical, biological or radiological sign of other lymphoma locations. Ultrasound examination of the neck revealed a bilateral heterogeneous thyroid lesion. Cytology revealed lymphoid cells having high nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio with multiple and irregular nucleoli. An urgent thyroid surgery consisting of total thyroidectomy had been performed since the presence of compressive signs due to the tumor. The histopathological examination of a biopsy from the thyroid tissue confirmed a high-grade non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Then, L-thyroxin substitution therapy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy were initiated. A prolonged remission was noted.

AIM：To develop a novel model of colitis in rats, using a combination of iodoacetamide and enteropathogenic E. coli（EPEC）, and to elucidate the pathophysiologic processes implicated in the development of ulcerative colitis （UC）. METHODS： Hale Sprague-Dawley rats （/7 = 158） were inoculated intrarectally on a weekly basis with 4 different combinations：（a） 1% methylcellulose （HC）, （b） 100 μL of 6% iodoacetamide （IA） in 1% HC, （c） 200 p.L containing 4×10^8 colony factor units （CFU） of EPEC, and （d） combined treatment of （IA） followed by bacteria （13） after 2 d. Thirty days post treatment, each of the four groups was divided into two subgroups; the inoculation was stopped for one subgroup and the other subgroup continued with biweekly inoculation until the end of the experiment. Colitis was evaluated by the clinical course of the disease, the macroscopic and microscopic alterations, activity of myeloperoxidase （HPO）, and by TNF-α gene expression. RESULTS： Findings indicative of UC were seen in the combined treatment （IA ＋ B） as well as the IA continued treatment groups： the animals showed slow rate of increase in body weight, diarrhea, bloody stools, high colonic ulcer score, as well as histological alterations characteristic of UC, with an extensive inflammatory reaction. During the course of the experiment, the MPO activity was consistently elevated and the TNF-α gene expression was upregulated compared to the control animals. CONCLUSION： The experimental ulcerative colitis model used in the present study resembles, to a great extent, the human disease. It is reproducible with characteristics indicative of chronicity.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a health problem affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Diabetic nephropathy (DN), as a significant complication of DM, has become the most common cause of endstage renal failure. Oxidative stress constitutes the key and common events in the pathogenesis of DN and antioxidants may play a beneficial role in its prevention. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Zinc Chloride on streptozotocin-induced diabetic nephropathy in rats compared to Gliclazide, a reference antidiabetic agent. Results showed that Zinc Chloride was able to control STZ-induced DN in rats as it normalized the elevated blood pressure, the increased insulin release, and the decreased blood glucose level. Zinc Chloride also improved kidney function as determined by the restoration of blood urea and creatinine level. Finally, Zinc Chloride was able to boost the antioxidant defenses of the kidney by increasing the reduced glutathione content and decreasing lipid peroxides content in addition to significantly decreasing kidney nitric oxide content compared to diabetic control rats. These results suggest that exposure to Zinc Chloride can protect from diabetic nephropathy and can be used as an adjuvant approach to treatment and prevention of renal damage.
