A causation mechanism for coal bursts during roadway development based on the major horizontal stress in coal:Very specific structural geology causing a localised loss of effective coal confinement and Newton’s second law

In 2017,one of the international authorities on coal bursts,mark Christopher,published a paper entitled"Coal bursts that occur during development:A rock mechanics enigma",in which several relevant technical issues were *** paper outlines what is considered to be a credible,first-principles,mechanistic explanation for these three current development coal burst conundrums by reference to early published coal testing work examining the significance of a lack of"constraint"to coal stability and an understanding of how very specific structural geology and other geological features can logically cause this to occur in situ,albeit on a statistically very rare *** basic model is examined by reference to published information pertaining to the development coal-burst that occurred at the Austar Coal Mine in New South Wales,Australia,in 2014 and from the Sunnyside District in Utah,the United ***"cause and effect"model for development of coal bursts presented also offers a meaningful explanation for the statistical improbability for what are nonetheless potentially highly-destructive events,being able to explain the statistical rarity being just as important to the credibility of the model as explaining the local conditions associated with burst *** model could also form the basis for a robust,riskbased approach utilising a"hierarchy of controls",to the operational management of the development coal burst ***,the use of pre-mining predictions for likely burst-prone and non-burstprone areas,the use of the mine layout to avoid or at least minimise mining within burst-prone areas if appropriate,and finally the development of an operational Trigger Action Response Plan(TARP)that reduces the likelihood of inadvertent roadway development into a burst-prone area without suitable safety controls already being in place.

Determination of bacterial viability by selective capture using surface-bound siderophores

A significant challenge in bacterial detection is the identification of viable bacteria over debris, specifically post decontamination. Of increasing concern are antibiotic resistant strains that require accurate and rapid post decontamination analysis. Current strategies are fraught with disadvantages and most of them are not selective for viable bacteria. However, bacteria are critically dependent upon iron sequestration, synthesizing and releasing siderophores (SDPs) to tightly bind iron, with the subsequent uptake of iron bound SDPs. This is a highly conserved process that occurs only in intact bacteria. Herein we report a facile method to use bacterial SDPs to selectively and rapidly identify only viable bacteria in complex matrices, and discriminate them from their dead counterparts. Desferrioxamine B (Desf B) tethered to a glass slide is used to specifically capture viable bacteria from a mixture of viable and dead Escherichia coli, as demonstrated by fluorescence microscopy. We re- port both direct conjugation of Desf B on thin-film-coated glass slides as well as biotin-streptavidin conjugation strategies, both of which are successful in the said goal. We have analyzed the density of images obtained upon fluorescence staining using edge detection with a Canny edge detector. This novel application of a software analysis tool originally developed for satellite imaging to biological staining allows for accurate quantitation of observed data.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Syphilis Prevalence and Risk Factors among Migrant Workers in Konongo, Ghana

Migrant workers, particularly gold mining workers, have been identified as a group at risk for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI). A cross-sectional study was undertaken on the correlates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and syphilis infections in a sample of migrants (Ghanaian citizens [156] and non-Ghanaian citizens [8]) working in a gold mining centres in Konongo, Ghana. The study was conducted between the months of January 2013 to December 2013. Of a total of 600 eligible migrant workers, only 164 (27.33%;males 114, females 50) of the eligible migrants took part in the study. Subjects voluntarily completed a risk-factor questionnaire and provided blood specimen for testing for the presence of antibodies to HIV and Treponema pallidum, the causative agent of syphilis. These data were analyzed using both univariate and multivariate techniques. The median age of the participants was 29.0 years (range 18 - 62 years). Of the 164 migrant workers tested, HIV and syphilis seroprevalence were 6.7% and 3.7% respectively. On multivariate analysis, the independent determinants for HIV infection were being female [odds ratio (OR) 2.94;95% confidence interval (95% CI 0.86 - 10.0);unmarried (OR 10.13;95% CI 1.2 - 81.09);drug use (OR 3.76;95% CI 0.38 - 36.3);and blood transfusion (OR 2.45;95% CI 0.27 - 22.37). Similarly, on multivariate analysis, the independent determinants for syphilis infection were having concurrent sexual partners (OR 2.16;95% CI 0.38 - 12.12);and blood transfusion (OR 5.07;95% CI 0.51 - 50.37). Consistent with similar studies worldwide, our results suggest high prevalence of HIV and syphilis infections among migrant workers who work in gold mining centres in Ghana.

Malignant melanoma in the pediatric population

Controversial pigmented lesions in children are a problem for pathologist, clinicians and families that are confronted with this dilemma. Some skin lesions in this population defy diagnosis with pathologists split between a benign diagnosis and a cancer diagnosis. Three cases of controversial pigmented lesions in the pediatric population are presented. Three patients underwent radical resection of the controversial pigmented lesion, intra-operative lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymph node(SLN) biopsy. Due to the low morbidity of the SLN procedure a case is made to perform lymphatic mapping in this clinical scenario. If the SLNs are negative, not much is lost except for the scar and this becomes another line of evidence that perhaps the original lesion was benign. If the SLN shows metastatic cells, then the original skin lesion must be malignant and the patient is offered stage Ⅲ recommendations that would include complete node dissections and adjuvant Interferon therapy. This strategy provides for adequate treatment of the worse-case scenario, that the skin lesion is malignant. The cost to the patient is a low morbidity procedure, the SLN biopsy.
