Clinical Profile of Women with Mental Disorders in Dakar Hospitals

Introduction: In Senegal, knowledge of the clinical profile of mental disorders in women has not been the subject of many studies, even though it is of vital importance to those involved in mental health. Thus, the aim of our study was to describe the clinical aspects of psychiatric disorders in women hospitalized at fann. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional, retrospective, and descriptive study over a five-year period. We identified 402 cases that met the selection criteria. The data collection form provided information on aspects of the clinical profile of mental disorders, such as medical, surgical, gynecological, obstetrical and psychiatric history, instigator of the request for care, diagnosis, duration and number of hospitalizations. ICD-10 was used for the various pathologies identified. Results: Asthma was noted in 7% of patients, as was hypertension. Gynecological surgery was found in 43 patients (11%). Eight patients were menopausal (2%). The mean number of gestations was 2.09, with a standard deviation of 2.257 and extremes between 0 and 10 gestations. Patients with a history of abortion numbered 58 (14%). The decision to hospitalize the patients was made by 96% (384 patients) of those around them. Hetero aggression was the most recurrent reason for hospitalization (19%). Pathology group f20-29 (schizophrenia, schizotypal disorder, and delusional disorders) was the majority group. Conclusion: The clinical profile of the mentally ill woman in Dakar is a woman in her mid-forties who most often presents with a personal psychiatric history, and her hospitalization is prompted by hetero-aggression and/or logorrhea. She usually suffers from schizophrenia and related disorders. Hospitalization usually lasts between 11 and 20 days.

Introduction: Women are currently more likely than men to suffer from mental health problems. The prevalence of mental health problems among women is also increasing. However, few studies conducted in Africa provide epidemiological data on women. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological profile of women with mental health problems in Dakar. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional, retrospective, descriptive study over a five-year period, from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2021. It concerned all women hospitalised for psychiatric reasons at the Psychiatry Department of fann Hospital, Dakar, Senegal. The data collection form provided information on the sociodemographic profile, i.e., age, current address, marital status, ethnicity, religion, level of education, professional activity, and use of psychoactive substances. Results: The prevalence of mental disorders was 34.9% and concerned the following ICD-10 pathology groups [f00 - 09], [f10 - f19], [f20 - f29], [f30 - f39], [f40 - 48], [f50 - f59] and [f60 - f69]. The mean age of the patients was 37 years, with a standard deviation of 13 and extremes from 16 to 74 years. Most patients were unmarried (56%). Among the married patients, the monogamous regime was in the majority in our study: 56% compared with 44% for the polygamous regime. Women had to attend french school in 74% of cases. In our study, 32% of patients had reached university level. The majority were unemployed (67%). The notion of mourning was found in 214 patients (30.2%). The birth of one or more children marked the lives of 184 patients (26%). Divorce was noted in 103 patients (14.5%). Marital conflicts were experienced by 94 patients (13.3%). Twenty percent of the patients had used psychoactive substances. Conclusion: The epidemiological profile of a woman with a mental disorder in Dakar is that of a single woman in her forties who had attended university and was a housewife. Introduction. UVA phototherapy, acitretin and oral corticosteroids are currently the front-line treatment of disseminated cutaneous lichen planus. We studied the efficacy of narrowband UVB therapy in this indication. Patients and methods. We retrospectively studied the dossiers of patients suffering from disseminated cutaneous lichen planus, treated with narrowband phototherapy in the Phototherapy Unit of the University hospital in Montpellier, from May to November of the year 2001. Disseminated lichen planus was defined as lichen involving at least 20p. 100 of the skin surface. Twenty patients were included. UVB were applied thrice weekly using a Philips TL01 cubicle (311313 nm). The protocol was that used for the treatment of psoriasis. We defined 4 types of response: complete response (disappearance of more than 90p. 100 of the lesions), partial response (disappearance of at least 50p. 100) poor response (improvement in 20 to 50p. 100) and failure (less than 20p. 100 reduction in the lesions). Assessment of relapses in the long term was made using a telephone survey among the patients treated or their physicians. Results. Complete response was obtained in 11 out of the 20 patients (55p. 100) and partial response in 4 (20p. 100), corresponding to 75p. 100 of the responders. Response was obtained with a median delay of 3 months, ranging from 2 to 6 months, following a median of 30 sessions (12 to 50) and acumulated dose of UVB of 36± 4.8 joules/cm2. The phototype, gender, age and duration of evolution before treatment did not influence the response. The relapse rate was and estimated 18p. 100 (2/11) 42 months after treatment had been stopped. Discussion. In our opinion, these results underline the efficacy of narrowband UVB in the treatment of disseminated cutaneous lichen planus. They confirm those of earlier studies and are superimposable with those of oral UVA phototherapy.

Newcastle disease (ND) virus is a leading threat to commercial and domestic poultry in Pakistan. The virus infects and constitutes irreversible impairment to the nervous system, damages the respiratory system, and marks severe gastrointestinal lesions leading to heavy mortality in short-living birds and substantial losses in layers and breeders. The continuous emergence and evolution of the virus made it inclined to evade the humoral response and indirectly the circumvention of artificial active immunization. Newcastle disease is caused by the orthoavula genus of the paramyxoviridae family and has shown high genetic diversity even in their genotypes while information regarding enzootic trends of the virus is scanty in Pakistan. A total of 40 tracheal samples of NDV were collected from different commercial broiler farms and 11 isolates of NDV were identified. In the current study, we determined the genetic diversity of the Newcastle disease virus based on the partial sequencing of the fusion protein gene available in the NCBI database. Genetic analysis showed that seven isolates belonged to class I genotype VII and four belonged to class II genotype II. Interestingly, two isolates had epidemiological connections with vaccine-like class II genotype II. Our findings, concerning the recent outbreaks of class I genotype VII and class II genotype II of NDV in vaccinated commercial flocks, suggest possible potential partial mutations in the fusion protein gene. Genetic diversity and formation of the new cleavage site in an important neutralizing protein of wild strain are linked with the potency of artificial active immunization and a major cause of vaccine failure.

The use of dyes such as tartrazine (E102) and sunset yellow (E102) in food, beverages and health products for technological and commercial purposes is common. The adverse effects caused by these dyes, such as allergies and hyperactivity disorder have been reported, especially in children. In the present study, a chromatographic method was developed and validated for simultaneous determination of tartrazine and sunset yellow. The chromatographic separation was performed on a Lichrocart® C18 column (125 × 4.6 mm;5 μm) with a security Guard-C18 column (4 × 2.0 mm, 5 μm;Phenomenex, Torrance, CA, USA) maintained at 30°C. The mobile phase consisted of a mixture of acetonitrile/ammonium acetate buffer pH 6.8 in gradient mode with a flow rate of 1 mL/min. The injection volume was 10 μL. The detection wavelength was set at 455 nm. The parameters of specificity, linearity, precision, repeatability, accuracy and sensitivity were examined for validation. The developed method is linear in the range of 1 μg/mL to 100 μg/mL with a R2> 0.998. The intra-day and inter-day precisions (RSD) were less than 0.6% and 3.1% respectively. The detection limit was 0.03 μg/mL and the quantification limit was 0.1 μg/mL. The retention time of tartrazine was 2.86 min, while sunset yellow was detected at 5.67 min. A simple, rapid, accurate and robust HPLC/UV-Visible method was developed and validated for simultaneous identification and quantification of tartrazine and sunset yellow. This developed method was successfully applied for the simultaneous determination of tartrazine and sunset yellow in soft drinks sold in Benin.

Relationship between Radiological Lung findings and Laboratory ferritin and D-Dimer Levels in Patients with COVID-19 Infection

Introduction: Pulmonary symptoms of COVID-19 infection range from asymptomatic infection to severe pneumonia. Pathogenesis and severity of symptoms were found to be related to the body’s immune response. Objectives: ferritin and D-Dimer in COVID-19 confirmed cases can predict lung injury and possible poor patient prognosis. Materials and Methods: Patients who had been admitted to Dr. Sulaiman Alhabib-Arryan Hospital with positive COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests between March 2020 and December 2021 were studied for blood ferritin and D-Dimer levels in relation to pulmonary radiological findings. Results: A total of 494 cases are included in this study. Male patients represent 74.1% of the cases, and the mean age is 51.68 ± 13.37 years. Increased age, ferritin, D-Dimer levels, and respiratory symptoms are factors that showed a statistically significant association with positive computed tomography (CT) findings. Receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC) showed that ferritin has a higher capability than D-Dimer to detect CT findings and that both are equal in predicting possible patient mortality. Suggested cutoff values for ferritin > 336 ng/mL, with 78.21% sensitivity and 86.42% specificity and for D-Dimer > 0.55 mg/L fEU, with sensitivity of 74.82% and specificity of 75.31%. for mortality, the suggested cutoff point for ferritin is >864.6 ng/mL, which gives a sensitivity of 80.26 and a specificity of 64.83%. The suggested cutoff point for D-Dimer is >1.46 mg/L fEU, which gives a sensitivity of 65.79% and a specificity of 78.23%. Conclusion: Laboratory markers such as ferritin and D-Dimer can be an accurate predictor of lung injury in COVID-19 patients and their increased values can predict the poor patient prognosis and possible mortality if aggressive hospital care is not provided.
