BACKGROUND: Solid-pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas is a rather rare but low-grade malignant tumor with good prognosis after surgical excision. METHODS: In 3 patients with solid-pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas which were proved pathologically, the imaging features ( CT in all and MRI in one patient) of the tumor were analyzed. RESULTS: In the 3 female patients under 35-year-old who presented no jaundice, CT revealed that huge solid-cystic masses of the pancreatic head with calcification in one and slight dilation of the pancreatic duct in another, but without dilation of the bile duct system in all. MRI demonstrated mixed signal intensity on T1WI and T2WI of the mass in one patient. CT and MRI revealed obvious enhancement of the cystic wall and solid part of the masses. CONCLUSIONS: CT and MRI findings of solid-pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas are characteristic, and the diagnosis can be made preoperatively with the combination of clinical features.

Chronic post-hypoxic myoclonus, also known as Lance-Adams syndrome (LAS), is a rare complication of successful cardiopulmanry resuscitation often accompanied by action myoclonus and cerebellar ataxia. It is seen in patients who have un-dergone a cardiorespiratory arrest, regained consciousness afterwards, and then developed myoclonus days or weeks after the event. Worldwide, 122 cases have been reported in the literature so far, including 1 case of Chinese. Here we report 2 Chinese LAS patients with detailed neuroimagings. Cranial single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) of patient 1, a 52-year-old woman, showed a mild hypoperfusion in her left temporal lobe, whereas patient 2, a 54-year-old woman, manifested a mild bilateral decrease of glucose metabolism in the frontal lobes and a mild to moderate decrease of the N-acetyl aspartate (NAA) peak in the bilateral hippocampi by cranial [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomographic (PET) scan and cranial magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), respectively. We also review the literature on the neuroimaging, pathogenesis, and treatment of LAS.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer development and progression is driven by the accumulation of genetic changes. In this study we constructed tissue microarray containing specimens from pancreatic cancer, adjacent non-cancer tissue and normal tissue to survey the expression of p53, p16 and cyclooxyganase-2 (COX-2). METHODS: Tissue microarray containing 337 specimens from different stages of pancreatic cancer, adjacent noncancer tissue and normal tissues was constructed, and the expression of p53, p16 and COX-2 was assayed by immunohistochemistry to consecutive formalin-fixed tissue microarray sections. RESULTS: The expression of p53, p16 and COX-2 was significantly higher in tumorous tissues than in non-tumorons ones. A significant relationship was observed between p53 and COX-2, or p16 and COX-2. But no obvious correlation was seen between p53 and p16 expressions. Logistic regression analysis showed p53 and COX-2 as dependent predictors in pancreatic carcinogenesis, and a reciprocal relationship to neoplastic progression between p53 and COX-2. CONCLUSION: Combination analysis of p53 and COX-2 may be useful in predicting pancreatic carcinogenesis.

Histamine ameliorates spatial memory deficits induced by MK-801 infusion into ventral hippocampus as evaluated by radial maze task in rats

BACKGROUND: The demand for the clinical use of hepa- tocytes is increasing. The aim of this study was to develop a method for procurement of high qualitative pig hepatocytes and to evaluate the state of freshly isolated and cultured hepatocytes. METHODS: The domestic extracorporeal circulating perfu- sion apparatus was used to isolate and harvest swine hepato- cytes by the two-step perfusion method with EDTA and collagenase. The viability, function and morphology of the freshly isolated and cultured cells were evaluated and ob- served by the trypan blue exclusion test, biochemical mea- surements, phase contrast microscopy and transmission electron micrography (TEM). RESULTS: The total yield of isolated hepatocytes reached to 1.5(±0.4)×l010 per liver with a viability of 92(±5)%, and the purity of hepatocytes reached to 98% Immediately after isolation, phase-contrast microscope and TEM showed that undamaged hepatocytes appeared bright, translucent and spherical in shape, with a characteristic well-contrasted border. After 24 hours, the concentrations of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotrans- ferase ( AST ), lactate dehydrogenase ( LDH ), albumin (ALB), creatinine (Cr) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) in the fluid of culture were declined significantly. CONCLUSION: This method of procuring swine hepato- cytes could get high quality cells with active metabolic function.

Objective: To sum up the preliminary experience in living related liver transplantation (LRLT). Methods: A 9-month-old male infant with biliary atresia (BA) who had undergone an unsuccessful Kasai operation was defined as a candidate for LR- LT. The donor was his 30-year-old mother. Her la- teral lobe of the left liver was transplanted into the infant's body as the graft. The left branches of the portal vein, left hepatic artery and left hepatic vein of the graft were end-to-end anastomosed to the por- tal vein, hepatic artery proper and hepatic vein of the recipient respectively. Biliary drainage was re- established via Roux-en-Y operation. Results: The donor retained her liver function within 2 weeks after the operation. Steroid and FK506 were prescribed in immunosuppressive therapy for the re- cipient. The blood bilirubin level of the infant de- creased to normal 2 weeks after operation. No acute rejection occurred. Biliary leakage in the early peri- od after the transplantation was controlled by drain- age, and E. coli infection was effectively treated with antibiotics. The donor and recipient are in satisfacto- ry condition to the present. Conclusion: LRLT is advisable for children with bili- ary atresia.

BACKGROUND: Recipients of liver transplantation could have postoperative structural injury and declined absorptive function in the gastrointestinal tract. Glutamine (Gln) is a special nutrient of small intestinal mucosa and of various kinds of cells proliferating rapidly. But Gln could form a kind of poisonous pyroglutamic acid in water solution, which is the limitation of Gln in clinical practice. Glycyl-glutamine (Gly-Gln) is highly soluble and can be hydro-lyzed to release glutamine. This study was undertaken to observe the effect of Gly-Gln dipeptide by enteral feeding on the intestinal structure and absorptive function after allogenetic liver transplantation in rats. METHODS: Twelve male inbred Lewis rats were selected randomly as donors, and 24 male inbred BN rats as recipients of allogenetic liver transplantation. The recipients were also randomly divided into two groups; control group (ALA group, n = 12 ) and experimental group ( GLN group , n =12). In each group, 6 normal BN rats were sampled as the normal parameter on the 3rd preoperative day. The 6 recipients in the control group received alanine 0. 6 g/kg daily for 3 days before operation and 7 days after operation by gastric perfusion, and the 6 recipients in the experimental group were given Gly-Gln 0.6 g/kg daily the same way. The 12 BN recipients underwent 3-day fasting (free access to water with 0. 23% sodium chloride) and ortho-topic liver transplantation in aseptic conditions and were given subcutaneous injection of CsA 2 mg/kg daily after the operation. The 12 BN recipients were sampled on the 8th postoperative day. All of the 24 BN rats were subjected to examination of mucosal structure, activities of Na + -K + - ATP and disaccharidase, and D-xylose absorption test. RESULTS: The 12 BN recipients were alive after liver transplantation. Effective and mild activation of O_(2) is essential but challenging for aerobic oxidation. In heterogeneous catalysis, high-valence manganese oxide(e.g., +4) is known to be active for the oxidation, whereas divalent MnO is ineffective due to its limited capacity to supply surface oxygen and its thermodynamically unstable structure when binding O_(2) in reaction conditions. Inspired by natural enzymes that rely on divalent Mn^(2+), we discovered that confining Mn^(2+) onto the Mn_(2)O_(3) surface through a dedicated calcination process creates highly active catalysts for the aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, benzyl alcohol, and *** Mn_(2)O_(3)-confined Mn^(2+) is undercoordinated and efficiently mediates O_(2) activation, resulting in 2–3 orders of magnitude higher activity than Mn_(2)O_(3) alone. Through low-temperature infrared spectroscopy, we distinguished low-content Mn^(2+) sites at Mn_(2)O_(3) surface, which are difficult to be differentiated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The combination of in-situ energydispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction further provides insights into the formation of the newly identified active Mn^(2+) sites. By optimizing the calcination step, we were able to increase the catalytic activity threefold *** finding offers promising frontiers for exploring active oxidation catalysts by utilizing the confinement of Mn^(2+)and oftenignored calcination skills.
