Multiphase CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloys(HEAs)were prepared by a powder metallurgy process com-bining mechanical alloying(MA)and vacuum hot-pressing sintering(HPS).The single-phase face-centered cubic(FCC)HEA powder prepared by MA was sintered into a bulk HEA specimen containing FCC phase matrix along with precipitated M 23 C 6 phase and nanoscaleσphase *** the sintering temper-ature was 1223 K,the ultimate strength reaches 1300±11.6 MPa,and the elongation exceeds 4%±0.6%.Microstructural characterization reveals that the formation of nanoscale particles and deformation twins play critical roles in improving the strain hardening(SH)*** the MA time promoted the formation of the precipitated phase and enhanced the SH ability by increasing the number of precip-itated *** SH capacity increases significantly with increasing sintering temperature,which is attributed to a significant enhancement in the twinning capacity due to grain growth and the reduced number ofσphase *** systematic studies,the planar glide of dislocations was found to be the main mode of deformation,while deformation twinning appeared as an auxiliary deformation mode when the twinning stress was *** the formation of precipitates leads to grain bound-ary and precipitation strengthening effects,crack initiation is more prominent owing to increased grain boundary brittleness around the precipitated M 23 C 6 *** prominence of crack initiation is a contra-diction that must be reconciled with regard to precipitation *** work serves as a useful reference for the preparation of high-strength HEA parts by powder metallurgy.

Evolution of deformation and relaxation behaviors of a prototypical Cu_(46)Zr_(46)A_(l8)metallic glass was explored by extensive creep tests under both physical aging and cyclic *** insights into the microstructure-induced dynamic heterogeneity which accommodates creep deformation were successively revealed via experimental measurements and spectral *** annihilation of local defects within metallic glass with increasing annealing time and cyclic numbers was observed through the reduction of amplitude in both activation energy spectra and relaxation-time spectra,which were also accompanied by an ascending value of β_(KWW).It is further found that the corresponding deformation units within the metallic glass do not disappear permanently,but are recoverable over the course of cyclic *** apparent suppressed relaxation process can be gradually alleviated with increasing resuming time between two consecutive cycles,behaving differently from physical aging,which indicates a notable discrepancy between thermal treatment and mechanical treatment.

The aims of this work turn towards the valorization of the underutilized Raw Sugar Beet Pulp by-product to produce white Cellulose Microfibers(CMFs),and its potential effect as a reinforcement for the development of High-Density Polyethylene(HDPE)*** CMFs were first obtained by subjecting raw SBP to alkali and bleaching *** characterization techniques were performed to confirm the successful removal of the amorphous compounds from the surface of individual fibers,including SEM,XRD,TGA,and FT-IR *** CMF loadings(5–10 wt%)were incorporated as bio-fillers into HDPE polymer to evaluate their reinforcing ability in comparison to raw and alkali-treated SBP using twin-screw extrusion followed by injection ***–(Ethylene–Butene)–Styrene Three-Block Co-Polymer Grafted with Maleic Anhydride was used as a compatibilizer to improve the interfacial adhesion between fibers and the ***,mechanical,and rheological properties of the produced composite samples were *** was found that the young’s modulus were gradually increased with increasing of fibers loadings,with a maximum increase of 30%and 26%observed for composite containing 10 wt%of CMFs and raw SBP,respectively,over neat ***,the use of coupling agent enhances the ductile behavior of the *** was also found that all fiber improves the hardness and toughness behavior of all reinforced composites as well as the complex modulus particularly at 10 wt%.The thermal stability slightly increases with the addition of *** study demonstrates a new route for the valorization of SBP *** fibers can be considered as a valuable bio-fillers candidate for the development of composite materials with enhanced properties.

Reproducibility of clinical output is important when investigating therapeutic efficacy in pre-clinical animal *** to its physiological relevance,a swine myocardial infarction(MI)model has been widely used to evaluate the effectiveness of stem cells or tissue-engineered constructs for ischemic heart *** methods are used to induce MI in the swine ***,it is difficult,using these approaches,to obtain a similar level of functional outcomes from a group of animals due to interpersonal variation,leading to increased experimental ***,in order to minimize human intervention,we developed an approach to use a customized occluder that has dimensional similarities with that of the coronary artery of animals in the case of the swine *** carried out angiography to measure the diameter of the middle left anterior descending artery of each individual animal to fabricate the customized occluder using a 3D-printing *** fabricated occluder contained a central hole smaller than that of the targeted middle left anterior descending artery to mimic an atherosclerotic coronary artery that has an approximately 20%blocked ***,the 3D-printed occluder can provide continuous blood flow through the central pore,indicating a high survival rate(88%)of up to 28 days *** method showed the possibility of creating consistent myocardial infarction induction as compared to the conventional representative closed-chest method(50%survival rate),thus highlighting how our method can have a profound effect on accelerating reliable experiments for developing new therapeutic approaches to ischemic heart diseases.

Determining driver perceptions about distractions and modeling their effects on driving behavior at different age groups

This study was aimed at determining the driving distractions which are perceived most hazardous and determining the effects of these distractions and age on speed and headway. A questionnaire survey was done to find out the opinion of drivers related to the most hazardous distraction. 639 responses were collected in the survey which were used to determine the top-rated distractions for drivers in Bahrain. Roadside observations were taken to observe the speed, headway, age and type of distraction for the driver. Speed was observed for 48 drivers while headway was observed for 36 drivers along with other parameters. The most hazardous distractions, according to the participants of the questionnaire, are using mobile phones, handling children, and accidents or incidents on the road. Further, the results of the two-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) test and regression analysis demonstrated that using mobile phones and age have a significant effect on both speed and headway. Speed tends to decrease with distraction for all age groups while decreasing the headway for young and middle-aged drivers. The effect of distraction is higher than the effect of age on speed, as well as headway. Texting has the most significant effect among distractions on headway. It is hereby recommended that policymakers should focus on increasing awareness and stringent law enforcement related to handling mobile phones and children, especially for young and middle-aged drivers.

Pollen tube growth is essential for successful double fertilization, which is critical for grain yield in crop plants. Rapid alkalinization factors(RALFs) function as ligands for signal transduction during fertilization. However, functional studies on RALF in monocot plants are ***, we functionally characterized two pollen-specific RALFs in rice(Oryza sativa) using multiple clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repeats(CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9-induced loss-of-function mutants,peptide treatment, expression analyses, and tag reporter lines. Among the 41 RALF members in rice, OsRALF17 was specifically expressed at the highest level in pollen and pollen *** applied OsRALF17 or OsRALF19peptide inhibited pollen tube germination and elongation at high concentrations but enhanced tube elongation at low concentrations, indicating growth regulation. Double mutants of OsRALF17 and OsRALF19(ralf17/19) exhibited almost full male sterility with defects in pollen hydration, germination, and tube elongation,which was partially recovered by exogenous treatment with OsRALF17 peptide. This study revealed that two partially functionally redundant OsRALF17 and OsRALF19 bind to Oryza sativa male-gene transfer defective 2(OsMTD2) and transmit reactive oxygen species signals for pollen tube germination and integrity maintenance in rice. Transcriptomic analysis confirmed their common downstream genes, in osmtd2 and ralf17/19. This study provides new insights into the role of RALF, expanding our knowledge of the biological role of RALF in regulating rice fertilization.

Bismuth(Bi),as an impurity element in copper and copper-based alloys,usually has a strong tendency of grain boundary(GB)segregation,which depends on the GB ***,the influence of such a segregation on the properties of ultrahigh-purity copper has been rarely reported and the exact structural arrangements of Bi atoms at different GBs remain largely *** this study,we investigated the influ-ence of trace amounts of Bi(50-300 wt ppm)on the ductility of an ultrahigh-purity copper(99.99999%)in the range of room temperature to 900°*** tensile results show that the addition of Bi seriously damages the ductility of the ultrahigh-purity copper at temperatures of 450-900°C,which is due to the GB segregation of *** this basis,such a segregation behavior at different types of GBs,including high and low angle GBs(HAGBs/LAGBs),and twin boundaries(TBs),via the scanning electron microscope-electron backscattered diffraction(SEM-EBSD)and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope(AC-STEM)investigations,combined with the first-principles calculations were systematically *** atomistic characterizations demonstrate an anisotropic Bi segregation,where severe enrich-ment of Bi atoms typically occurs at the HAGBs,while the absence of Bi adsorption prevails at LAGBs or *** particular,the segregated Bi at random HAGBs exhibited the directional bilayer adsorption,while the special symmetrical7 HAGB presented a unique Bi-rich cluster *** findings pro-vide a comprehensive experimental and computational understanding on the atomic-scale segregation of impurities in metallic materials.

Clinical outcome after pulmonary metastasectomy from primary hepatocellular carcinoma:Analysis of prognostic factors

AIM: To review the surgical outcomes in terms of the surgical indications and relevant prognostic factors. METHODS: Sixteen patients underwent therapeutic lung surgery between March 1999 and May 2006. The observation period was terminated on May 31, 2007. The surgical outcomes and the clinicopathological factors were compared. RESULTS: There was no mortality or major morbidity encountered in this study. The mean follow-up period after metastasectomy was 26.7 ± 28.2 (range: 1-99 mo), and the median survival time was 20 mo. The 1-and 5-year survival rates were 56% and 26%, respectively. At the end of the follow-up, 1 patient died from hepatic failure without recurrence, 6 died from hepatic failure with a recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and 4 died from recurrent HCC with cachexia. Among several clinical factors, Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that liver transplantation as a treatment for the primary lesion, grade of cell differentiation, and negative evidence HBV infection were independent predictive factors. On Cox's proportional hazard model, there were no significant factors affecting survival after pulmonary metastasectomy in patients with HCC. CONCLUSION: A metastasectomy should be performed before other treatments in selected patients. Although not significant, patients with liver transplantation of a primary HCC survived longer. Liver transplantation might be the most beneficial modality that can offer patients better survival. A multi-institutional and collaborative study would be needed for identifying clinical prognostic factors predicting survival in patients with HCC and lung metastasis.

Nowadays,thermal condition and solute field are considered as the potential dominant factors controlling competitive grain growth during directional solidification ***,the controlling modes and critical conditions of competitive grain growth have been drastically debated over the past two *** this work,thermal condition and solute field are combined to study the competitive grain growth in the converging case by experimental observation and numerical simulation of bicrystal *** find the competitive grain growth is controlled by the cooperative effect of thermal condition and solute field,and the controlling modes are related to the bicrystal misorientation between favorably and unfavorably oriented *** the unfavorably oriented grain is low misoriented,unfavorably oriented grain dominates grain selection,and the competitive grain growth performs as solute field ***,with the increase of unfavorably oriented grain’s misorientation,the grain selection converts into favorably oriented grain domination,and the competitive grain growth changes to thermal condition *** explain these abnormal transformation phenomena,we propose a misorientation dependent thermal condition-solute field cooperative domination model and identify the critical conditions by a critical misorientation(θ_(cm)).According to dynamic equation of dendrite growth,we calculate the critical misorientationθ;to prove this *** theoretical calculation results agree well with the experimental results.
