Tomographic particle image velocimetry measurement on three-dimensional swirling flow in dual-stage counter-rotating swirler

Three-Dimensional(3D)swirling flow structures,generated by a counter-rotating dualstage swirler in a confined chamber with a confinement ratio of 1.53,were experimentally investigated at Re=2.3×10^(5)using Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry(Tomo-PIV)and planar Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV).Based on the analysis of the 3D time-averaged swirling flow structures and 3D Proper Orthogonal Decomposition(POD)of the Tomo-PIV data,typical coherent flow structures,including the Corner Recirculation Zone(CRZ),Central Recirculation Zone(CTRZ),and Lip Recirculation Zone(LRZ),were extracted.The counter-rotating dual-stage swirler with a Venturi flare generates the independence process of vortex breakdown from the main stage and pilot stage,leading to the formation of an LRZ and a smaller CTRZ near the nozzle outlet.The confinement squeezes the CRZ to the corner and causes a reverse rotation flow to limit the shape of the CTRZ.A large-scale flow structure caused by the main stage features an explosive breakup,flapping,and Precessing Vortex Core(PVC).The explosive breakup mode dominates the swirling flow structures owing to the expansion and construction of the main jet,whereas the flapping mode is related to the wake perturbation.Confinement limits the expansion of PVC and causes it to contract after the impacting area.

Structural and magnetic properties of micropolycrystalline cobalt thin films fabricated by direct current magnetron sputtering

Pure cobalt(Co)thin films were fabricated by direct current magnetron sputtering,and the effects of sputtering power and pres-sure on the microstructure and electromagnetic properties of the films were investigated.As the sputtering power increases from 15 to 60 W,the Co thin films transition from an amorphous to a polycrystalline state,accompanied by an increase in the intercrystal pore width.Simultaneously,the resistivity decreases from 276 to 99μΩ·cm,coercivity increases from 162 to 293 Oe,and in-plane magnetic aniso-tropy disappears.As the sputtering pressure decreases from 1.6 to 0.2 Pa,grain size significantly increases,resistivity significantly de-creases,and the coercivity significantly increases(from 67 to 280 Oe),which can be attributed to the increase in defect width.Corres-pondingly,a quantitative model for the coercivity of Co thin films was formulated.The polycrystalline films sputtered under pressures of 0.2 and 0.4 Pa exhibit significant in-plane magnetic anisotropy,which is primarily attributable to increased microstress.

Ferroptosis is a novel form of regulated cell death characterized by iron-dependent excessive lipid peroxidation.The core organelle involved in ferroptosis is mitochondria.Mito-chondria undergoing ferroptosis are distinct from normal mitochondria in terms of morphology,biochemistry,gene expression,and energy metabolism.An increasing number of studies have shown that mitochondria and their associated metabolic pathways mediate ferroptosis in the development and progression of breast cancer.In this review,we discuss the relevant research about ferroptosis in breast cancer and provide a comprehensive summary of mitochondrial regulation in ferroptosis from the perspective of lipid metabolism,oxidative phosphorylation,ion metabolism,glycometabolism,and nucleotide metabolism.We also summarize the appli-cation of mitochondrial metabolism-related pathways as ferroptosis treatment targets.Here we provide new insights into the relationship between mitochondria,ferroptosis,and breast cancertreatment.

A CAD-BEM geometry transformation method for face-based primary geometric input based on closed contour recognition

Performance analysis during the early design stage can significantly reduce building energy consumption.However,it is difficult to transform computer-aided design(CAD)models into building energy models(BEM)to optimize building performance.The model structures for CAD and BEM are divergent.In this study,geometry transformation methods was implemented in BES tools for the early design stage,including auto space generation(ASG)method based on closed contour recognition(CCR)and space boundary topology calculation method.The program is developed based on modeling tools SketchUp to support the CAD format(like*.stl,*.dwg,*.ifc,etc.).It transforms face-based geometric information into a zone-based tree structure model that meets the geometric requirements of a single-zone BES combined with the other thermal parameter inputs of the elements.In addition,this study provided a space topology calculation method based on a single-zone BEM output.The program was developed based on the SketchUp modeling tool to support additional CAD formats(such as*.stl,*.dwg,*.ifc),which can then be imported and transformed into*.obj.Compared to current methods mostly focused on BIM-BEM transformation,this method can ensure more modeling flexibility.The method was integrated into a performance analysis tool termed MOOSAS and compared with the current version of the transformation program.They were tested on a dataset comprising 36 conceptual models without partitions and six real cases with detailed partitions.It ensures a transformation rate of two times in any bad model condition and costs only 1/5 of the time required to calculate each room compared to the previous version.

Modular Soft Robotic Crawlers Based on Fluidic Prestressed Composite Actuators

Soft robotic crawlers have limited payload capacity and crawling speed.This study proposes a high-performance inchworm-like modular robotic crawler based on fluidic prestressed composite(FPC)actuators.The FPC actuator is precurved and a pneumatic source is used to flatten it,requiring no energy cost to maintain the equilibrium curved shape.Pressurizing and depressurizing the actuators generate alternating stretching and bending motions of the actuators,achieving the crawling motion of the robotic crawler.Multi-modal locomotion(crawling,turning,and pipe climbing)is achieved by modular reconfiguration and gait design.An analytical kinematic model is proposed to characterize the quasi-static curvature and step size of a single-module crawler.Multiple configurations of robotic crawlers are fabricated to demonstrate the crawling ability of the proposed design.A set of systematic experiments are set up and conducted to understand how crawler responses vary as a function of FPC prestrains,input pressures,and actuation frequencies.As per the experiments,the maximum carrying load ratio(carrying load divided by robot weight)is found to be 22.32,and the highest crawling velocity is 3.02 body length(BL)per second(392 mm/s).Multi-modal capabilities are demonstrated by reconfiguring three soft crawlers,including a matrix crawler robot crawling in amphibious environments,and an inching crawler turning at an angular velocity of 2/s,as well as earthworm-like crawling robots climbing a 20 inclination slope and pipe.

Echo State Network Based on Improved Knowledge Distillation for Edge Intelligence

Echo state network(ESN) as a novel artificial neural network has drawn much attention from time series prediction in edge intelligence. ESN is slightly insufficient in long-term memory, thereby impacting the prediction performance. It suffers from a higher computational overhead when deploying on edge devices. We firstly introduce the knowledge distillation into the reservoir structure optimization, and then propose the echo state network based on improved knowledge distillation(ESN-IKD) for edge intelligence to improve the prediction performance and reduce the computational overhead. The model of ESN-IKD is constructed with the classic ESN as a student network, the long and short-term memory network as a teacher network, and the ESN with double loop reservoir structure as an assistant network. The student network learns the long-term memory capability of the teacher network with the help of the assistant network. The training algorithm of ESN-IKD is proposed to correct the learning direction through the assistant network and eliminate the redundant knowledge through the iterative pruning. It can solve the problems of error learning and redundant learning in the traditional knowledge distillation process. Extensive experimental simulation shows that ESN-IKD has a good time series prediction performance in both long-term and short-term memory, and achieves a lower computational overhead.

Peer-to-Peer Trading in Distribution Systems with the Utility's Operation

To realize a liberalized peer-to-peer (P2P) electricity market in distribution systems with network security, this paper develops a general framework for P2P trading in distribution systems with the utility's operation. The model is formulated as a bi-level programming. The utility's operation is an upper level problem, where a calculation method of network usage charges for P2P trading is also proposed. Peers' P2P trading is a lower level problem. An iterative algorithm based on analytical target cascading (ATC) is proposed to solve the model, where the interactions between utility and peers are presented. Numerical results on the IEEE 33-bus system demonstrate that the proposed method realizes a liberalized P2P market and ensures network security in distribution systems.

Simultaneous removal of Cd(Ⅱ)and As(Ⅴ)by ferrihydrite-biochar composite:Enhanced effects of As(Ⅴ)on Cd(Ⅱ)adsorption

The coexistence of cadmium(Cd(Ⅱ))and arsenate(As(Ⅴ))pollution has long been an environmental problem.Biochar,a porous carbonaceous material with tunable functionality,has been used for the remediation of contaminated soils.However,it is still challenging for the dynamic quantification and mechanistic understanding of the simultaneous sequestration of multi-metals in biochar-engineered environment,especially in the presence of anions.In this study,ferrihydrite was coprecipitated with biochar to investigate how ferrihydritebiochar composite affects the fate of heavy metals,especially in the coexistence of Cd(Ⅱ)and As(Ⅴ).In the solution system containing both Cd(Ⅱ)and As(Ⅴ),the maximum adsorption capacities of ferrihydrite-biochar composite for Cd(Ⅱ)and As(Ⅴ)reached 82.03μmol/g and 531.53μmol/g,respectively,much higher than those of the pure biochar(26.90μmol/g for Cd(Ⅱ),and 40.24μmol/g for As(Ⅴ))and ferrihydrite(42.26μmol/g for Cd(Ⅱ),and 248.25μmol/g for As(Ⅴ)).Cd(Ⅱ)adsorption increased in the presence of As(Ⅴ),possibly due to the changes in composite surface charge in the presence of As(Ⅴ),and the increased dispersion of ferrihydrite by biochar.Further microscopic and mechanistic results showed that Cd(Ⅱ)complexed with both biochar and ferrihydrite,while As(Ⅴ)was mainly complexed by ferrihydrite in the Cd(Ⅱ)and As(Ⅴ)coexistence system.Ferrihydrite posed vital importance for the co-adsorption of Cd(Ⅱ)and As(Ⅴ).The different distribution patterns revealed by this study help to a deeper understanding of the behaviors of cations and anions in the natural environment.

Neurosyphilis complicated by anti-γ-aminobutyric acid-B receptor encephalitis: A case report

BACKGROUND Syphilis is an infectious disease caused by Treponema pallidum that can invade the central nervous system,causing encephalitis.Few cases of anti-N-methyl-Daspartate receptor autoimmune encephalitis(AE)secondary to neurosyphilis have been reported.We report a neurosyphilis patient with anti-γ-aminobutyric acid-B receptor(GABABR)AE.CASE SUMMARY A young man in his 30s who presented with acute epileptic status was admitted to a local hospital.He was diagnosed with neurosyphilis,according to serum and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)tests for syphilis.After 14 d of antiepileptic treatment and anti-Treponema pallidum therapy with penicillin,epilepsy was controlled but serious cognitive impairment,behavioral,and serious psychiatric symptoms were observed.He was then transferred to our hospital.The Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE)crude test results showed only 2 points.Cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed significant cerebral atrophy and multiple fluidattenuated inversion recovery high signals in the white matter surrounding both lateral ventricles,left amygdala and bilateral thalami.Anti-GABABR antibodies were discovered in CSF(1:3.2)and serum(1:100).The patient was diagnosed with neurosyphilis complicated by anti-GABABR AE,and received methylprednisolone and penicillin.Following treatment,his mental symptoms were alleviated.Cognitive impairment was significantly improved,with a MMSE of 8 points.Serum anti-GABABR antibody titer decreased to 1:32.The patient received methylprednisolone and penicillin after discharge.Three months later,the patient’s condition was stable,but the serum anti-GABABR antibody titer was 1:100.CONCLUSION This patient with neurosyphilis combined with anti-GABABR encephalitis benefited from immunotherapy.

Dissolution kinetics and reaction mechanism of Al_(2)O_(3) in molten CaF_(2)-CaO-Al_(2)O_(3) slag

The dissolution behavior of Al_(2)O_(3) in molten CaF_(2)-CaO-Al_(2)O_(3) slag,a basic slag system of electroslag remelting process,was investigated by rotating cylinder method using corundum rods to simulate Al_(2)O_(3) inclusions in steel.The experimental results show that the dissolution rate of Al_(2)O_(3);rods in CaF_(2)-CaO-Al_(2)O_(3) slag increases with the increase in rotating speed and temperature,and the rate-controlling step is the mass transfer in the slag.The dissolution rate of Al_(2)O,in CaF_(2)-CaO-Al_(2)O_(3) slag increases with the increase in the ratio of CaO to Al_(2)O_(3),which is due to the increase in dissolution driving force and the decrease in slag viscosity.The apparent activation energy of the mass transfer of AlOs in slag C is calculated to be 222.86 kJ mol^(-1).During the dissolution of Al_(2)0,inclusions in the slag,it reacts with F in liquid slag at first,then reacts with CaO to form the intermediate compounds of xCaO-yAl_(2)O_(3) system,and finally dissolves in molten slag.The dissolution rate of Al_(2)O_(3) inclusions in CaF_(2)-CaO-Al_(2)O_(3) slag for electroslag remelting is positively correlated with the ratio of the dissolution driving force and slag viscosity,and the correlation coeficient is 2.487×10^(-11).
