A historical re-analysis of the calamitous midget typhoon passing through hong Kong region on 18 September 1906 and its storm surge impact to hong Kong region

A typhoon passed through hong Kong region suddenly and unexpectedly on 18 September 1906(the“Typhoon 1906”)and had a disastrous impact on Victoria Harbour and its surroundings in just a couple of *** the year 1906 was the“Bingwu”year in the Chinese calendar,the typhoon is also known historically as the“Bingwu Typhoon”.Tremendous loss of lives and property resulted,and the shipping and fishing communities were *** mysteries arising from this calamitous typhoon have existed to date:1)Why the hong Kong region Observatory was not able to provide any forewarning?2)whether the storm surge reported in some contemporary records is entirely credible?This paper will focus on both of *** this paper,we re-analyse historical weather observations recorded in various historical documents and estimate the possible storm size,intensity and track of Typhoon 1906 using tropical cyclone *** on the re-analyses,the storm surges,storm tides and wave heights in hong Kong region are also estimated using storm surge and wave *** results reveal that Typhoon 1906 was a midget typhoon,with a radius of maximum winds of 11 km or smaller,during its passage through hong Kong *** explains why it was technically impossible for a forewarning to be given at that time when real-time weather observations from ships,meteorological satellites and radars were *** also estimate that the maximum storm surges(storm tides)in hong Kong region were not higher than 0.82 m(2.43 mCD)and 1.98 m(4.15 mCD)in Victoria Harbour and Tolo Harbour *** figures are found to be limited by the intensity and the storm size of the ***,we conclude that the previously documented storm surge figures are not supported by the present study.

Hydrogels are soft materials consisting of a three-dimensional network of polymer *** the years,hydrogels with different compositions have been developed as drug carriers for diverse biomedical applications,ranging from cancer therapy and wound care to the treatment of neurodegenerative and inflammatory *** of these carriers,however,are designed only to deliver single *** based on hydrogels for co-delivery of multiple agents,with the release rate of each of the co-delivered agents tunable,are *** study reports a one-pot method of fabricating alginate-based complex fibers with the Janus morphology,with carboxymethyl cellulose sodium functioning as a polymeric modifier of the properties of each of the fiber *** using malachite green and minocycline hydrochloride as model drugs,the generated fibers demonstrate the capacity of enabling the release profile of each of the co-delivered drugs to be precisely *** with their negligible toxicity and the retention of the activity of the loaded drugs,the complex fibers reported in this study warrant further development and optimization for applications that involve co-delivery of multiple agents.

Six common algal fatty acids （FAs） with different numbers of double bonds, lipophilic fractions and proteins extracted from the diatom Navicula pelliculosa and algal ceils were chlorinated to evaluate their potential in generating disinfection by-products （DBPs）. The result showed that the more double bonds in the FAs, the higher the amounts of chloroform and dichloroacetic acid （DCAA） produced, but such a pattern was not observed for trichloroacetic acid （TCAA）. Based on the previously reported composition of fatty acids in algal lipids, the DBP generation potentials of algal lipids were calculated. These predicted values were much lower than those measured in the chlorinated algal lipophilic fraction, suggesting unknown lipophilic fraction（s） served as potent DBPs precursors. Another calculation attempted to predict DBP production in algal cells based on algal lipid and protein composition, given quantified measured DBP production per unit algal lipid and proteins. The analysis showed that the observed DBP production was similar to that predicted （〈 35% difference）, suggesting that algal biochemical compositions may serve as a bioindicator for preliminary estimation of chloroform, DCAA and TCAA formation upon chlorinating algae.

Wolbachia is a bacterium that is present in 60%of insects but it is not generally found in Aedes aegypti,the primary vector responsible for the transmission of dengue virus,Zika virus,and other human diseases caused by RNA *** has been shown to stop the growth of a variety of RNA viruses in Drosophila and in ***-infected *** have both reproductive advantages and disadvantages over wild *** Wolbachia-infected females are fertilized by either normal or infected males,the offspring are healthy and *** the other hand,if Wolbachia-negative females are fertilized by Wolbachia-positive males,the offspring do not *** phenomenon is called cytoplasmic ***,Wolbachia-positive females have a reproductive advantage,and the Wolbachia is expanded in the *** the other hand,Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes lay fewer eggs and generally have a shorter *** recent years,scientists have successfully released these Wolbachia-adapted mosquitoes into the wild in several countries and have achieved a high level of replacement with Wolbachiapositive ***,we propose a minimal mathematical model to investigate the feasibility of such a release *** model has five steady-states two of which are locally asymptotically *** of these stable steady-states has no Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes while for the other steady-state,all mosquitoes are infected with *** apply optimal control theory to find a release method that will drive the mosquito population close to the steady-state with only Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes in a twoyear time *** some of the model parameters cannot be accurately measured or predicted,we also perform uncertainty and sensitivity analysis to quantify how variations in our model parameters affect our results.

The sediment reaction and diffusion equation,with generalized initial mid boundary condition is studied. By using Laplace transform and Jordan lemma, an analytical solution is got,,which is an extension of analytical solution provided by Cheng Kwokming James ( only diffusion was considered in analytical solution of Cheng). Some problems arisen in the computation of analytical solution formula are also analysed.

The flow field near a spur dike such as down flow and horseshoe vortex system(HVS)are susceptible to the topographic changes in the local scouring process,resulting in variation of the sediment transport with *** this study,large eddy simulations with fixed-bed at different scouring stages were conducted to investigate the changes in flow *** results imply that the bed deformation leads to an increase in flow rate per unit area,which represent the capability of sediment transportation by water,in the scour ***,the intensity of turbulent kinetic energy and bimodal motion near the sand bed induced by the HVS were also ***,the peak moments between the two sediment transport mechanisms were ***,understanding the complex feedback mechanism between topography and flow field is essential for the local scour problem.

Reductive cleavage of the NO bond of isoxazolidine ring with catalytic hydrogenation over Raney nickel was described. Bicyclic isoxazolidines could be effectively converted into the corresponding 1,3-amino-alcohol possessing a sultone or sultam moiety with high conversion and yield when the hydrogenation was catalyzed by freshly prepared Raney nickel under a pressure of 40 psi in the presence of triethylamine.
