Synergistic effect of Si and K in improving the growth,ion distribution and partitioning of Lolium perenne *** saline-alkali stress

The application of Si or K has proven to be beneficial for the growth of plants under saline-alkali stress. However, the synergistic effect of Si and K in improving the growth, ion distribution, and partitioning in Lolium perenne L. under saline-alkali stress remains unclear. In this study, the growth characteristics and ion-selective absorption of ryegrass(Lolium perenne L.) exposed to different levels of saline-alkali stress were evaluated. The growth parameters of ryegrass were significantly improved when Si was applied by itself or coupled with K under low saline-alkali stress. Under a high saline-alkali level, only simultaneous application of Si and K could significantly improve the growth of ryegrass. When Si and K were applied together, the K^(+)/Na^(+) and Ca^(2+)/Na^(+) ratios in root, stem, and leaf of ryegrass were maximally improved as compared to the individual treatments and control. The K^(+) and Ca^(2+) concentrations in the vacuole, cell wall, and organelle of leaf were increased dramatically. This improvement was due to the ability of applied ions to compete with Na^(+), allowing the plant to maintain osmotic potential and leaf water content. The concentration of Na^(+) was significantly reduced when Si and K were applied and mainly concentrated in the soluble fraction and cell wall. The Si concentration in ryegrass increased markedly by the combined application of Si and K, and most of it was accumulated in the cell wall and soluble fraction, which could help in chlorophyll synthesis, reduce membrane injury, and increase water absorption under saline-alkali stress. This study emphasized the advantage of Si and/or K on the growth of plants under different saline-alkaline levels and provided a guide for the production of Si-K fertilizer and its application in saline-alkali soil.

In this study,we investigated the transcriptional spatio-temporal dynamics of the taste 1 receptor(T1R)gene family repertoire in seabream(Sparus aurata[sa]),during larval ontogeny and in adult *** early larval development,sa T1R expression arises heterochronously,*** extraoral taste-related perception in the gastrointestinal tract(GIT)anticipates first exogenous feeding(at 9 days post hatching[dph]),followed by the buccal/intraoral perception from 14 dph onwards,supporting the hypothesis that the early onset of the molecular machinery underlying sa T1R expression in the GIT is not induced by food but rather genetically *** adulthood,we characterized the expression patterns of sa T1R within specific tissues(n=4)distributed in oropharingeal,GIT and brain regions substantiating their functional versatility as chemosensory signaling players to a variety of biological functions beyond oral taste ***,we provided for the first time direct evidences in fish for m RNA coexpression of a subset of sa T1R genes(mostly sa T1R3,*** common subunit of the heterodimeric T1R complexes for the detection of“sweet”and“umami”substances),with the selected gut peptides ghrelin(ghr),cholecystokinin(cck),hormone peptide yy(pyy)and proglucagon(pg).Each peptide defines the enteroendocrine cells(ECCs)identity,and establishes on morphological basis,a direct link for T1R chemosensing in the regulation of fish digestive ***,we analyzed the spatial gene expression patterns of 2 taste signaling components functionally homologous to the mammalian G(i)a subunit gustducin,namely sa G(i)a1 and sa G(i)a2,and demonstrated their co-localization with the sa T1R3in EECs,thus validating their direct involvement in taste-like transduction mechanisms of the fish *** conclusion,data provide new insights in the evolutionary conservation of gut sensing in fish suggesting a conserved role for nutrient sensors modulating entero-endocrine secretion.

The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)outbreak has drawn the scientific community's attention to pre-existing metabolic conditions that could aggravate the infection,causing extended viral shedding,prolonged hospitalization,and high death *** dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)emerges as a surrogate for COVID-19 severity due to the constellation of metabolic alterations it *** review outlines the impact MAFLD exerts on COVID-19 severity in obese subjects,besides the possible mechanistic links to the poor *** data collected showed that MAFLD patients had poorer COVID-19 outcomes than non-MAFLD obese *** is generally accompanied by impaired glycemic control and systemic arterial hypertension,both of which can decompensate during the COVID-19 clinical ***,MAFLD subjects had higher plasma inflammatory marker concentrations than non-MAFLD subjects,which might be related to an intensified cytokine storm syndrome frequently associated with the need for mechanical ventilation and *** conclusion,MAFLD represents a higher risk than obesity for COVID-19 severity,resulting in poor outcomes and even progression to non-alcoholic *** should include MAFLD subjects in the high-risk group,intensify preventive measurements,and prioritize their vaccination.

Highly electroactive N–Fe hydrothermal carbons and carbon nanotubes for the oxygen reduction reaction

Glucose-derived carbons were prepared by hydrothermal carbonization of glucose followed by carbonization or activation to obtain carbon materials with different microporosities. These microporous carbons and carbon nanotubes(CNTs) were functionalized with melamine and/or iron(Ⅱ) phthalocyanine(FePc)following three different methodologies:(i) Functionalization with melamine via thermal treatment,(ii)incorporation of the lowest amount of FePc reported in the literature via incipient wetness impregnation followed by thermal treatment and(iii) functionalization with melamine followed by Fe Pc *** chemical and textural characterization of the prepared materials and their electrochemical assessment allowed to understand the role of microporosity in the incorporation of FePc and its effect on the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR). It was observed that FePc was preferentially incorporated inside the porous structure, especially in samples with more developed microporosity. However, functionalization with melamine modified the textural properties and the surface chemistry, favoring the incorporation of FePc on the surface. Regarding the electrochemical performance, the presence of FePc greatly enhanced the electroactivity of the microporous catalysts. An onset potential of 0.88 V and a four-electron pathway were obtained for glucose-derived carbons, whereas the limiting current densities and kinetic current densities rose by 126% and 222%, respectively, in comparison to the base sample. Notwithstanding, the highest electrochemical activity was observed for the sample prepared with CNTs, due to the synergy between the active metal centers and their highly graphitic carbon structure. The electrochemical parameters of CNTFeP csurpass the commercial Pt/C. The half-wave potential is 40 mV higher, the limiting current density increases by 17%, and a negligible production of by-products(< 1%) was observed.

Women's football:Player characteristics and demands of the game

The number of scientific investigations on women＇s football specific to the topics of player characteristics and demands of the game has considerably increased in recent years due to the increased popularity of the women＇s game worldwide, although they are not yet as numerous as in the case of men＇s football. To date, only two scientific publications have attempted to review the main findings of studies published in this area. However, one of them was published about 20 years ago, when women＇s football was still in its infancy and there were only a few studies to report on. The other review was more recent. Nonetheless, its main focus was on the game and training demands of senior elite female players. Thus, information on female footballers of lower competitive levels and younger age groups was not included. Consequently, an updated review is needed in this area. The present article therefore aims to provide an overview of a series of studies that have been published so far on the specific characteristics of female football players and the demands of match-play. Mean values reported in the literature for age （12-27 years）, body height （155-174 cm）, body mass （48-72 kg）, percent body fat （13%-29%）, maximal oxygen uptake （45.1-55.5 mL/kg/min）, Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level l （780-1379 m）, maximum heart rate （189-202 bpm）, 30 m sprint times （4.34-4.96 s）, and counter- movement jump or vertical jump （28-50 cm） vary mostly according to the players＇ competitive level and positional role. There are also some special considerations that coaches and other practitioners should he aware of when working with female athletes such as the menstrual cycle, potential pregnancy and lactation, common injury risks （particularly knee and head injuries） and health concerns （e.g., female athlete triad, iron deficiency, and anemia） that may affect players＇ football performance, health or return to play. A Robust and Efficient Adaptive Multigrid Solver for the Optimal Control of Phase Field Formulations of Geometric Evolution Laws

We propose and investigate a novel solution strategy to efficiently and accurately compute approximate solutions to semilinear optimal control problems,focusing on the optimal control of phase field formulations of geometric evolution *** optimal control of geometric evolution laws arises in a number of applications in fields including material science,image processing,tumour growth and cell *** this,many open problems remain in the analysis and approximation of such *** the current work we focus on a phase field formulation of the optimal control problem,hence exploiting the well developed mathematical theory for the optimal control of semilinear parabolic partial differential *** of the resulting optimal control problemis computationally challenging,requiring massive amounts of computational time and memory *** main focus of this work is to propose,derive,implement and test an efficient solution method for such *** solver for the discretised partial differential equations is based upon a geometric multigrid method incorporating advanced techniques to deal with the nonlinearities in the problem and utilising adaptive mesh *** in-house twogrid solution strategy for the forward and adjoint problems,that significantly reduces memory requirements and CPU time,is proposed and investigated ***,parallelisation as well as an adaptive-step gradient update for the control are employed to further improve *** with a detailed description of our proposed solution method together with its implementation we present a number of computational results that demonstrate and evaluate our algorithms with respect to accuracy and efficiency.A highlight of the present work is simulation results on the optimal control of phase field formulations of geometric evolution laws in 3-D which would be computationally infeasible without the solution strategies proposed in the present work.

The broke of a tailings dam from Vale S.A. destroyed a gigantic area killing 270 persons in Brumadinho/Brazil. Organizing activities after a mass disaster is a complex process that requires the involvement of many people and resources in the laboratory. To DNA identification of the victims, a daunting work had to be made by DNA laboratory staff in a collaborative effort with many partners. Efforts to implement good practice guidelines in Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) have revealed several important aspects that need to change in the forensic DNA laboratory. This article highlights the challenges of implementing DVI best practice guidelines in resource-poor settings, but with professionals from different sectors engaged in the same goal of briefly identifying victims and helping families and society.
