Recent advancements in stem cell technology open a new door for patients suffering from diseases and disorders that have yet to be *** cell-based therapy,including human pluripotent stem cells(hPsCs)and multipotent mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs),has recently emerged as a key player in regenerative *** are defined as self-renewable cell types conferring the ability to differentiate into various cellular phenotypes of the human body,including three germ *** are multipotent progenitor cells possessing self-renewal ability(limited in vitro)and differentiation potential into mesenchymal lineages,according to the International Society for Cell and Gene therapy(ISCt).this review provides an update on recent clinical applications using either hPSCs or MSCs derived from bone marrow(BM),adipose tissue(At),or the umbilical cord(UC)for the treatment of human diseases,including neurological disorders,pulmonary dysfunctions,metabolic/endocrine-related diseases,reproductive disorders,skin burns,and cardiovascular ***,we discuss our own clinical trial experiences on targeted therapies using MsCs in a clinical setting,and we propose and discuss the MSC tissue origin concept and how MSC origin may contribute to the role of MSCs in downstream applications,with the ultimate objective of facilitating translational research in regenerative medicine into clinical *** mechanisms discussed here support the proposed hypothesis that BM-MSCs are potentially good candidates for brain and spinal cord injury treatment,At-MSCs are potentially good candidates for reproductive disorder treatment and skin regeneration,and UC-MsCs are potentially good candidates for pulmonary disease and acute respiratory distress svndrometreatment.

Ecological immunology: do sexual attraction and immunity trade-off through a desaturase?

Given the limited availability of resources in nature, sexual attractiveness may trade off with immunocompetence, as the immunocompetence handicap hypothesis (ICHH) posits. In invertebrates, a direct link between trade-offs through hormonal/molecular effectors in sexual signals and immunity has not been found so far. Here, we assessed how variation in sexual signals affected parasite infection in two sex pheromone selected lines of the moth Chloridea virescens: an attractive line with a low ratio of 16:Ald/Z11-16:Ald and an unattractive line with a high ratio. When infecting these lines with an apicomplexan parasite, we found that the attractive Low line was significantly more susceptible to the parasite infection than the unattractive High line. Since the ratio difference between these two lines is determined by a delta-11-desturase, we hypothesized that this desaturase may have a dual role, i.e., in the quality of the sexual signal as well as an involvement in immune response, comparable to testosterone in vertebrates. However, when we used CRISPR/cas9 to knockout delta-11-desturase in the attractive Low line, we found that the pheromonal phenotype did change to that of the High line, but the infection susceptibility did not. Notably, when checking the genomic location of delta-11-desaturase in the C. virescens, we found that mucin is adjacent to delta-11-desaturase. When comparing the mucin sequences in both lines, we found four nonsynonymous SNPs in the coding sequence, as well as intronic variation between the two lines. these differences suggest that genetic hitchhiking may explain the variation in susceptibility to parasitic infection.

Calculation of the ex-core neutron noise induced by individual fuel assembly vibrations in two PWR cores

Calculation of the neutron noise induced by fuel assembly vibrations in two pressurized water reactor(PWR) cores has been conducted to investigate the effect of cycle burnup on the properties of the ex-core detector noise. An extension of the method and the computational models of a previous work have been applied to two different PWR cores to examine a hypothesis that fuel assembly vibrations cause the corresponding peak in the auto power spectral density(APSD) increase during the cycle. Stochastic vibrations along a random two-dimensional trajectory of individual fuel assemblies were assumed to occur at different locations in the cores. two models regarding the displacement amplitude of the vibrating assembly have been considered to determine the noise source. then, the APSD of the ex-core detector noise was evaluated at three burnup steps. the results show that there is no monotonic tendency of the change in the APSD of ex-core detector; however, the increase in APSD occurs predominantly for peripheral assemblies. When assuming simultaneous vibrations of a number of fuel assemblies uniformly distributed over the core, the effect of the peripheral assemblies dominates the ex-core neutron *** behaviour was found similar in both cores.

Mean-field description of heavy-ion scattering at low energies and fusion

the nuclear mean-field potential built up during the ^(12)C+^(12)C and ^(16)O+^(16)O collisions at low energies relevant for the carbon-and oxygen-burning processes is constructed within the double-folding model(DFM) using the realistic ground-state densities of^(12)C and^(16)O, and CDM3Yn density-dependent nucleon–nucleon(NN) interaction. the rearrangement term, indicated by the Hugenholtz–van Hove theorem for the single-particle energy in nuclear matter, is properly considered in the DFM calculation. to validate the use of the density-dependent NN interaction at low energies, an adiabatic approximation was suggested for the dinuclear overlap density. the reliability of the nucleus–nucleus potential predicted through this low-energy version of the DFM was tested in the optical model(OM) analysis of the elastic^(12)C+^(12)C and ^(16)O+^(16)O scattering data at energies below 10 MeV/*** OM results provide a consistently good description of the elastic angular distributions and 90 excitation function. the dinuclear mean-field potential predicted by the DFM is further used to determine the astrophysical S factor of the ^(12)C+^(12)C and ^(16)O+^(16)O fusions in the barrier penetration model. Without any adjustment of the potential strength, our results reproduce the non-resonant behavior of the S factor of the ^(12)C+^(12)C and ^(16)O+^(16)O fusions very well over a wide range of energies.

Effect of gamification applications on success of dentistry students

BACKGROUND Gamification,the use of game materials in education,has been used in several scientific fields,and studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in student *** to evaluate whether the success of 4th-and 5th-grade dentistry students increases when using the gamification applications Kahoot!and *** An experimental design was used to measure the effect of gamification applications on students who were taught using the traditional *** this purpose,Mentimeter and Kahoot!applications were used in this experimental *** groups of 4th-and 5th-grade students were formed:Mentimeter,Kahoot!,and control *** effect of gamification applications on achievement was evaluated by administering a post-test to these groups after the instructional ***-way analysis of variance and t-tests were used for statistical *** A total of 35.5%of the students were in the Mentimeter group,29.8%in the Kahoot!group,and 34.6%in the control *** the total number of students,54.8%were female and 45.2%were male,while 52.2%were 5th-grade students and 47.8%were 4th-grade *** overall grade point average was found to be 66.65(range,24-100).there was a statistically significant difference in average success scores between students of different groups(P=0.003the average success score was the highest in the Mentimeter group(71.64)and the lowest in the Kahoot!group(62.15).In the control group,this score was *** average success score was higher for students in the 5thgrade(68.16)and for female students(68.84).CONCLUSION Gamification has a great potential in the education of dentomaxillofacial radiology *** outperformed both the Kahoot!and the traditional method in terms of average student success rates.

We report on the synthesis of Sn-doped hematite nanoparticles(Sn-α-Fe_(2)O_(3) NPs)by the hydrothermal *** prepared Sn-α-Fe_(2)O_(3) NPs had a highly pure and well crystalline rhombohedral phase with an average particle size of 41.4 *** optical properties of as-synthesizedα-Fe_(2)O_(3) NPs show a higher bandgap energy(2.40-2.57 eV)than that of pure bulkα-Fe_(2)O_(3)(2.1 eV).By doping Sn intoα-Fe_(2)O_(3) NPs,the Sn-doped hematite was observed a redshift toward a long wavelength with in-creasing Sn concentration from 0%to 4.0%.the photocatalytic activity of Sn-dopedα-Fe_(2)O_(3) NPs was evaluated by Congo red(CR)dye *** degradation efficiency of CR dye using Sn-α-Fe_(2)O_(3) NPs catalyst is higher than that of pureα-Fe_(2)O_(3) *** highest degradation efficiency of CR dye was 97.8%using 2.5%Sn-dopedα-Fe_(2)O_(3) NPs catalyst under visible-light *** results suggest that the synthesized Sn-dopedα-Fe_(2)O_(3) nanoparticles might be a suitable approach to develop a photocatalytic degradation of toxic inorganic dye in wastewater.

the secosteroid hormone vitamin D has, in addition to its effects in bone metabolism also functions in the modulation of immune responses against infectious agents and in inhibiting tumorigenesis. thus, deficiency of vitamin D is associated with several malignancies, but also with a plethora of infectious diseases. Among other communicable diseases, vitamin D deficiency is involved in the pathogenesis of chronic liver diseases caused by hepatitis B and C viruses(HBV, HCV) and high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency with serum levels below 20 mg/mL in patients with HBV and HCV infection are found worldwide. Several studies have assessed the effects of vitamin D supplementation on the sustained virological response(SVR) to interferon(IFN) plus ribavirin(RBV) therapy in HBV and HCV infection. In these studies, inconsistent results were reported. this review addresses general aspects of vitamin D deficiency and, in particular, the significance of vitamin D hypovitaminosis in the outcome of HBvand HCV-related chronic liver diseases. Furthermore,current literature was reviewed in order to understand the effects of vitamin D supplementation in combination with IFN-based therapy on the virological response in HBV and HCV infected patients.

Design and synthesis of low bandgap(LBG) polymer donors is inevitably challenging and their processability from a non-halogenated solvent system remains a hurdle to overcome in the area of highperformance polymer solar cells(PSCs).Due to a high aggregation tendency of LBG polymers,especially diketopyrrolopyrrole(DPP)-based polymers coupled with bithiophenes in the polymer backbones,their widespread adoption in non-ha logena ted solvent-processed PSCs has been ***,a novel LBG DPP-based polymer,called PDPP4 t-1 F with asymmetric arrangement of fluorine atom,has been successfully synthesized and showed an outstanding power conversion efficiency(PCE) of 10.10% in a singlejunction fullerene-based ***,an impressive PCE of 13.21% has been achieved in a tandem device from a fully non-halogenated solvent system,which integrates a wide bandgap PDtBtBz-2 F polymer in the bottom cell and LBG PDPP4 t-1 F polymer in the top *** achieved efficiency is the highest value reported in the literature to date in fullerene-based tandem *** found that a uniformly distributed interpenetrating fibril network with nano-scale phase separation and anisotropy of the polymer backbone orientation for efficient charge transfer/transport and suppressed charge recombination in PDPP4 t-1 F-based PSCs led to outstanding PCEs in single and tandem-junction PSCs.

Functionalized monodisperse microbubble production:microfluidic method for fast,controlled,and automated removal of excess coating material

Functionalized monodisperse microbubbles have the potential to boost the sensitivity and efficacy of molecular ultrasound imaging and targeted drug delivery using bubbles and *** bubbles can be produced in a microfluidic flow focusing ***,their functionalization and sequential use require removal of the excess lipids from the bubble suspension to minimize the use of expensive ligands and to avoid competitive binding and blocking of the receptor *** date,excess lipid removal is performed by centrifugation,which is labor intensive and challenging to *** importantly,as we show,the increased hydrostatic pressure during centrifugation can reduce bubble ***,we introduce a novel automated microfluidic’washing’***,bubbles are injected in a microfluidic chamber 1mm in height where they are left to float against the top ***,lipid-free medium is pumped through the chamber to remove excess lipids while the bubbles remain located at the top ***,the washed bubbles are resuspended and removed from the device into a collection *** demonstrate that the present method can(i)reduce the excess lipid concentration by 4 orders of magnitude,(ii)be fully automated,and(iii)be performed in minutes while the size distribution,functionality,and acoustic response of the bubbles remain ***,the presented method is a gateway to the fully automated production of functionalized monodisperse microbubbles.
