Reduction of muscle contraction and pain in electroporation-based treatments:An overview

BACKGROUNd In the first studies of electrochemotherapy(ECT),small cutaneous metastases were treated and only mild or moderate pain was observed;therefore,pain was not considered a significant *** the procedure began to be applied to larger cutaneous metastases,pain was reported more *** that reason,reduction of both muscle contractions and pain have been investigated over the *** To present an overview of different protocols described in literature that aim to reduce muscle contractions and pain caused by the electroporation(EP)effect in both ECT and irreversible EP *** Thirty-three studies published between January 1999 and November 2020 were *** protocol designs and electrode geometries that reduce patient pain and the number of muscle contractions and their intensity were *** The analysis showed that both high frequency and bipolar/biphasic pulses can be used to reduce pain and muscle contractions in patients who undergo EP ***,adequate electrode design can decrease EP-related ***,needle length,diameter and configuration of the distance between the needles can be optimised so that the muscle volume crossed by the current is reduced as much as ***/biphasic pulses with an inadequate pulse length seem to have a less evident effect on the membrane permeability compared with the standard pulse *** that reason,the number of pulses and the voltage amplitude,as well as the pulse duration and frequency,must be chosen so that the dose of delivered energy guarantees EP *** Pain reduction in EP-based treatments can be achieved by appropriately defining the protocol parameters and electrode *** results can be achieved with high frequency and/or bipolar/biphasic ***,the efficacy of these alternative protocols remains a crucial point to be assessed further.

Geometry-based graphical methods for solar control in architecture:A digital framework

The form of a building is among the most critical design aspects concerning building energy ***-based passive design strategies,like solar control,can significantly reduce heating and cooling demands if implemented early in the design *** this sense,there is an evident need for tools that can adequately support designers in their *** paper aims to illustrate how geometry-based graphical methods(GGM)can provide effective support in the conceptual design *** paper introduces a novel digital framework for designing and analysing shading devices that leverages geometrical models and graphical *** digital implementation of GGM allows extending their applicability to threedimensional and non-planar geometries.A comprehensive review of existing methods and tools for the design of shading devices lays the ground for the proposed digital framework,which is then demonstrated through two case *** results show that the diagrammatic nature of GGM facilitates a better and more direct understanding of the relationship between form and performance.

Thermal survival limits of young and mature larvae of a cold stenothermal chironomid from the Alps （diamesinae： Pseudodiamesa branickii [Nowicki, 1873]）

The threats posed by climate change make it important to expand knowl- edge concerning cold and heat tolerance in stenothermal species from habitats potentially threatened by temperature changes. Thermal limits and basal metabolism variations were investigated in Pseudodiamesa branickii （diptera： Chironomidae） under thermal stress between -20 and 37 ℃. Supercooling point （SCP）, lower （LLTs） and upper lethal temper- atures （ULTs）, and oxygen consumption rate were measured in overwintering young （lst and 2nd instar） and mature （3rd and 4th instar） larvae from an Alpine glacier-fed stream. Both young and mature larvae were freezing tolerant （SCPs = -7.1 ℃ and -6.4 ℃, re- spectively; LLT100 〈SCP and 〉 -20 ℃） and thermotolerant （ULTso = 31.7 ± 0.4, 32.5± 0.3, respectively）. However, ontogenetic differences in acute tolerance were observed. The LLT50 calculated for the young larvae （=-7.4 ℃） was almost equal to their SCP （= -7.1 ℃） and the overlapping of the proportion of mortality curve with the CPIF curve highlighted that the young larvae are borderline between freezing tolerance and freezing avoidance. Furthermore, a lower ULT100 in the young larvae （of ca. 1 ℃）, suggests that they are less thermotolerant than mature larvae. Finally, young larvae exhibit a higher oxygen consumption rate （mgO2/gAFdM/h） at any temperature tested and are overall less resistant to oxygen depletion compared to mature larvae at ≥ 10 ℃. These findings sug- gest that mature larvae enter into a dormant state by lowering their basal metabolism until environmental conditions improve in order to save energy for life cycle completion during stressful conditions.

Heart failure in elderly: progress in clinical evaluation and therapeutic approach

Chronic heart failure (CHF) represents a major and growing health problem, due to its high incidence and prevalence, its poor prognosis and its impact on health-care costs. Although CHF patients are mainly elderly, few studies were aimed at testing the efficacy of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in this population. The difficulty in CHF diagnosis among the elderly is related to different factors, such as: the frequent presence of co-morbidity conditions mimicking or masking heart failure signs and symptoms; the different diagnostic cut-offs of natriuretic peptides; and the need to correctly evaluate diastolic function in order to assess CHF with preserved ejection fraction. Furthermore,the therapy of elderly CHF patients has not beenwell defined, considering the few studies involving very aged patients and the absence of a therapeutic strategy demonstrated to improve prognosis of CHF patients with preserved ejection fraction. The aim of this review is to focus on the most recent issues concerning the diagnosis and therapy of elderly patients affected byCHF.

Expanding through the Emerald Isle:exploration and spatial orientation of non-native bank voles in Ireland
