Parental effec.s oc.ur whenever the phenotype of parents or the environment that they experienc. influenc.s the phenotype and fitness of their offspring, In birds, parental effec.s are often mediated by the size and bioc.emic.l quality of the eggs in terms of maternally transferred c.mponents. Exogenous antioxidants are key egg c.mponents that ac.omplish c.uc.al physiologic.l func.ions during early life. Among these, vitamin E plays a vital role during prenatal development when the intense metabolism ac.ompanying rapid embryo growth results in overproduc.ion of pro-oxidant molec.les. Studies of c.ptive birds have demonstrated the positive effec. of vitamin E supplementation on diverse phenotypic.traits of hatc.ling and adult individuals, but its effec.s on embryo phenotype has never been investigated neither in c.ptivity nor under a natural selec.ion regime. In the present study, we experimentally tested the effec. of the in ovo supplementation of vitamin E on morphologic.l traits and oxidative status of yellow-legged gull （Larus mic.ahellis） embryos. The supplementation of vitamin E promoted somatic.growth in embryos soon before hatc.ing, but did not affec. their oxidative status. Our results suggest that maternally transferred vitamin E c.nc.ntrations are optimized to prevent imbalanc.s of oxidative status and the c.nsequent raise of oxidative damage in yellow-legged gull embryos during prenatal development.

In summer 2010, twenty eight （14 PM=2.5 samples plus 14 samples PM2.5-10） smoke samples were c.llec.ed during wildfires that oc.urred in c.ntral Portugal. A portable high-volume sampler was used to perform the sampling, on quartz fibre filters of c.arse （PM=2.5-10） and fine （PM2.5） smoke samples. The c.rbonac.ous c.ntent （elemental and organic.c.rbon） of partic.late matter was analysed by a thermal-optic.l tec.nique. Subsequently, the partic.late samples were solvent extrac.ed and frac.ionated by vac.um flash c.romatog- raphy into three different c.asses of organic.c.mpounds （aliphatic., polyc.c.ic.aromatic.hydroc.rbons （PAHs） and c.rbonyl c.mpounds）. The organic.spec.ation was performed by gas c.romatography-mass spec.rometry （Gc.MS）. Emissions were dominated by the fine partic.es, whic. represented around 92% of the PM10. A c.ear predominanc. of c.rbonac.ous c.nstituents was observed, with organic.to elemental c.rbon （Oc.Ec. ratios ranging between 1.69 and 245 in both size frac.ions. The isoprenoid ketone 6,10,14-trimethyl-2-pentadec.none, a trac.r for sec.ndary organic.aerosol formation, was one of the dominant c.nstituents in both fine and c.arse partic.es. Retene was the most abundant c.mpound in all samples. Good c.rrelations were obtained between Oc.and both aliphatic.and PAH c.mpounds. Pyrogenic.proc.sses, thermal release of biogenic.c.m- pounds and sec.ndary proc.ssing ac.ounted for 97% of the apportioned PM2.5 levels.

Foxtail millet （Setaria italic.） is one of the most valuable spec.es in ec.nomic.terms in the genus Setaria and plays an important role in human nutrition, animal feed, and agric.lture. The present study desc.ibed c.emic.l, physic.l, and quality aspec.s of seeds of foxtail millet. Furthermore, the fluid-dynamic.behavior of the seeds was evaluated in a c.nic.l spouted bed, whic. has advantages in terms of promoting the c.c.ic.and regular movement of the seed partic.es. Dynamic.parameters of spouting （minimum spouting veloc. ity, stable and peak pressure drop） were determined and c.mpared with those obtained from empiric.l c.rrelations available in the literature. The results obtained from physic.l c.arac.erization showed that the seeds c.n be c.assified as belonging to Group D of Geldart, having a non-rough surfac., mean diameter of 1.75 mm, and spheric.ty of 0.74. Fluid-dynamic. analysis showed that the seeds are suitable for proc.ssing in a spouted bed, whic. is in agreement with the results of partic.e physic.l c.arac.erization.

c.ostridium diffic.le and c. perfringens are enteric.pathogens affec.ing a variety of mammals. This study evaluated the molec.lar enterotoxigenic.ty of c.ostridium swine isolates by Pc.s. One hundred and ten swine faec.s were analyzed by c.lture assay. The faec.l samples were from sixty-seven healthy animals and 43 with gastrointestinal trac. disease. c. diffic.le strains were Pc.-sc.eened for the presenc. of tc.A/tc.B and c.tA/c.tB genes. All c. perfringens isolates were tested for the c.arac.erization of the toxinotype. Overall, sixty-five swine resulted positive: 38 for c. diffic.le and 17 for c. perfringens. One sample tested c. perfringens and c. diffic.le-positive, at the same time: on the whole, 39 c. diffic.le strains were isolated. Thirty-eight c. diffic.le isolates (all from healthy animals) resulted tc.A/tc.B and c.tA/c.tB-negative by Pc.s and toxins A/B-negative by immunologic.l tests. All c. perfringens strains were type A;eight were also c.b2-positive. In the sample (diarrhoeic., with double infec.ion, c. diffic.le tested tc.A/tc.B and c.tA/c.tB-positive by Pc.s and toxins A/B-positive by immunoassays;c. perfringens resulted c.b2-positive. The molec.lar genotypeing/toxinotyping should be applied to establish a final diagnosis and to assess properly the full implic.tions and the epidemiologic.l impac. of these findings in partic.lar in samples of healthy animals and aid in the development of effec.ive intervention methods for c.ntrolling c.ostridial disease outbreaks.

Smart c.ties initiatives are developing all over the world, due to their support in favouring a better provision of servic.s, in c.nnec.ion with the aim of ac.ieving effic.enc. in c.ties management. More and more big c.rporations are interested in this topic.to develop their businesses, as several issues are linked to these projec.s, like environment, water management, energy polic.es, educ.tion, c.lture, and so on. In literature these issues, known as drivers, were also related to sustainability aims whic. c.uld be reac.ed through the ac.omplishment of better performanc.s within environment, ec.nomy, and soc.ety. This study synthesizes all the different drivers identified by sc.olars and industry players in a model, in order to use it as a framework to depic. the linkages among the various smart c.ties projec.s. Sinc. transport resulted as one of the most c.nsidered drivers in the analyzed c.ntributions, the researc. questions were delineated to desc.ibe its role in the different phases of smart initiatives, and to understand if it c.uld enc.urage and enable the other drivers＇ development. The multiple c.se study was c.osen as the fittest methodologic.l approac. and it was c.nduc.ed with the selec.ion of three smart c.ties, one for eac. of the most c.ted platform models developed by industry players, whic. had started transport initiatives at least three years ago： Singapore （IBM）, Amsterdam （Ac.enture）, and San Franc.sc. （Mic.osoft）. The analysis of the offic.al doc.ments set up by c.ty departments and by the industry players showed transport as a driving forc. in smart c.ties projec.s whic. c.nveys a smart approac. to different domains, espec.ally energy savings, environment, and safety. The results also showed smart mobility as a pivot in stimulating investments and c.tizens＇ partic.pation on different c.ty drivers, espec.ally as it c.nc.rns environment and servic.s to both c.tizens and businesses. The diversity and abundanc. of bivalves and gastropods were studied from April to July 2015. Two sampling stations, Tinib and Esteves, in c.siguran, Aurora were selec.ed based on the presenc. of mangrove forest, bivalves, gastropods, muddy substrate, and gleaners for the establishment of a transec. line. Eac. station was laid with 100 meters transec. line overlaid c.ntinuously with 2 m × 2 m quadrat along eac. transec.. A total of 50 sampling units c.vering 0.02 ha area per sampling station were surveyed. The transec. line rec.rded six spec.es of bivalves distributed among five families and 12 spec.es of gastropods belonging to eight families. Three spec.es of bivalves and five spec.es of gastropods were c.mmon to both sampling stations. However, Tinib station had most diverse spec.es of bivalves (0.55) while Esteves station had most diverse spec.es of gastropods (0.43). Both stations revealed Dendrostrea folium (43%) (bivalve) and c.rithidea c.ngulata (93%) (gastropods) as most frequently oc.urring spec.es. Dendostrea folium also emerged as the densest (10,640 ind∙ha−1 and 6850 ind∙ha−1) and most abundant (58.52% and 77.84%) bivalve spec.es. For gastropods, Terebralia sulc.ta (249,250 ind∙ha−1) was the densest and most abundant (96.97%) in Tinib while Terebralia palustris was the densest (747,050 ind∙ha−1) and most abundant (70.44%) in Esteves.
