This article takes its cue from the english critic, novelist and painter John Berger. He argues that what we know determines what we see. Hotels and railway stations, though they differ in size, design and appearance, are places of temporary national and international congress that are recognized by everyone. They become visible or even iconic once their history or their role is turned into at least part of a wider narrative in literature, film or in other arts. This provides a representative focus by which we may read a city＇s or a nation＇s past. In exemplifying such connections I focus first on the long-term history of Friedrichstraβe station and some of the surrounding hotels in the context of the history of Berlin, situating them within the national and, by implication, also the international context. Secondly, I will consider the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 as an event in which the role of railway stations generated both personal and collective memories across cultures and over several decades.

AIM:To investigate the effectiveness of Clostridium novyi(***)-NT spores for the treatment of established subcutaneous pancreatic tumor in the syngeneic,immunocompetent Panc02/C57Bl/6 model. MeTHODS:***-NT spores were applied intravenously to animals carrying established pancreatic tumors of three different *** immune responses in peripheral blood and spleen were examined by flow ***,cytotoxic activity of lymphocytes against syngeneic tumor targets was analyzed. ReSULTS:Application of spores identified,that(1) small tumors(ere completely unaffected (n=10);(2)very large tumors(>450 mm3)responded with substantial necrosis followed by shrinkage and significant lethality most likely due to tumor lysis syndrome (n=6);and(3)an optimal treatment window exists for tumors of approximately 250 mm 3 (n=21).In this latter group,all tumor-bearing animals had complete tu-mor regression and remained free of tumor recurrence. In subsequent tumor rechallenge experiments a significant delay in tumor growth compared to the initial tumor cell inoculation was observed(tumor volume at day 28:197.8±87.3 mm 3 vs 500.1±50.9 mm3,Pese effects were accompanied by systemic activation of immune response mechanisms predominantly mediated by the innate arm of the immune system. CONCLUSION:The observed complete tumor regression is encouraging and shows that immunotherapy with ***-NT is an interesting strategy for the treatment of pancreatic carcinomas of defined sizes.

In order to analyze the signaling function of hydrogen peroxide （H202） production in senescence in more detail, we manipulated intracellular H202 levels in Arabidopsis thaliala （L.） Heynh by using the hydrogen- peroxide-sensitive part of the escherichia coil transcription regulator OxyR, which was directed to the cytoplasm as well as into the peroxisomes. H202 levels were lowered and senescence was delayed in both transgenic lines, but OxyR was found to be more effective in the cytoplasm. To transfer this knowledge to crop plants, we analyzed oilseed rape plants Brassica napus L. cv. Mozart for H20~ and its scavenging enzymes catalase （CAT） and ascorbate peroxidase （APX） during leaf and plant development. H202 levels were found to increase during bolting and flowering time, but no increase could be observed in the very late stages of senescence. With increasing H202 levels, CAT and APX activities declined, so it is likely that similar mechanisms are used in oilseed rape and Arabidopsis to control H202 levels. Under elevated CO2 conditions, oilseed rape senescence was accelerated and coincided with an earlier increase in H202 levels, indicating that H202 may be one of the signals to inducing senescence in a broader range of Brassicaceae.

Collagen is one of the most important biomaterials for tissue engineering *** its excellent biocompatibility,it shows the non-negligible disadvantage of poor mechanical *** crosslinking with rose bengal and green light(RGX)is an appropriate method to improve this *** development of collagen laminates is helpful for further adjustment of the mechanical properties as well as the controlled release of incorporated *** this study,we investigate the impact of crosslinking and layering of two different collagen scaffolds on the swelling behavior andmechanical behavior inmicro tensile tests to obtain information on its wearing comfort(stiffness,strength and ductility).The mechanical stability of the collagen material after degradation due to cell contact is examined using thickness *** is no linear increase or decrease due to layering homologous ***,a decrease in elongation at break,Young’s modulus and ultimate tensile strength are measured when the untreated monolayer is compared to the crosslinked ***,we can detect a connection between stability and cell *** results show that with variation in number and type of layers,collagen scaffolds with tailored mechanical properties can be *** a multi-layered structure enables the release of biomolecules into inner or outer layers for biomedical applications.

The effect of Lentinula edodes water extract(Le)on two osteoblastic cell cultures(HOS 58 and Saos-2)was investigated to determine if this edible medicinal mushroom has osteoinductive *** of alkaline phosphatase and mineralization were used as indicators for the vitality and maturation of the bone *** of human osteosarcoma cells HOS 58 for five days in presence of a serial dilution of the aqueous extract of ***(0.8μg/mL-125μg/mL)resulted in a significant elevation of alkaline phosphatase activity(ALP)of the cells in comparison to untreated ***-2 cells,incubated with Le(20μg/mL)andb-glycerol phosphate(2 mM)for 21 days,displayed a 2 fold level of mineralization than cells cultured soley with the positive control,*** obtained results clearly indicate the activity of Le as a bone inducing agent in ***,the shiitake mushroom(***)deserves attention as a supportive dietary treatment or nutraceutical in the case of diseases accompanied with bone disorder,such as osteoporosis,osteopenia,and late complication of diabetes.

The demand for industrial enzymes is continually rising,fueled by the growing need to shift towards more sustainable industrial ***,making efficient enzyme production strains and identifying optimal enzyme expression conditions remains a ***,the production of the enzymes themselves comes with unavoidable impacts,e.g.,the need to utilize secondary ***,we take a more holistic view of bioprocess development and report an integrative approach that allows us to rapidly identify improved enzyme expression and secretion conditions and make use of cyanobacterial waste biomass as feed for supporting Pichia pastoris *** demonstrate these capabilities by producing a phytase secreted by *** that is grown on cyanobacterium hydrolysate and buffered glycerol-complex(BMGY)medium,with genetic expression conditions identified by high-throughput screening of a randomized se-cretion *** our best-performing strain is grown in a fed-batch fermentation on BMGY,we reach over 7000 U/mL in three days.

Previous phytochemical investigation of the leaves and seeds of Pittosporum angustifolium *** to the isolation and structural elucidation of polyphenols and triterpene *** for cytotoxicity of isolated saponins revealed that the predominant structural feature for a cytotoxic activity are acyl substituents at the oleanane aglycon *** present work reports the results of a screening of 10 selected acylated saponins for their potential to inhibit the human DNA-topoisomerase I,giving rise to IC50 values in a range of 2.8-46.5 *** clarify the mode of observed cytotoxic action and,moreover,to distinguish from a pure surfactant effect which is commonly accompanied with saponins,these results indicate an involvement of the topoisomerase I and its role as a possible target structure for a cytotoxic *** addition,computational predictions of the fitting of saponins to the topoisomerase I-DNA complex,indicate a similar binding mode to that of clinically used topoisomerase I *** Abstract Ten acylated triterpene saponins from Pittosporum angustifolium were investigated for their potential to inhibit the human DNA-topoisomerase I and computational predictions of the fitting of saponins to the topoisomerase I-DNA complex were carried out.
