Challenges and Possibilities of Cell-Based Tissue-Engineered Vascular Grafts

There is urgent demand for biologically compatible vascular grafts for both adult and pediatric *** utility of conventional nonbiodegradable materials is limited because of their thrombogenicity and inability to grow,while autologous vascular grafts involve considerable disadvantages,including the invasive procedures required to obtain these healthy vessels from patients and insufficient availability in patients with systemic *** of these issues could be overcome by tissue-engineered vascular grafts(TEVGs).A large body of evidence has recently emerged in support of TEVG technologies,introducing diverse cell sources(e.g.,somatic cells and stem cells)and novel fabrication methods(e.g.,scaffold-guided and self-assembled approaches).Before TEVG can be applied in a clinical setting,however,several aspects of the technology must be improved,such as the feasibility of obtaining cells,their biocompatibility and mechanical properties,and the time needed for fabrication,while the safety of supplemented materials,the patency and nonthrombogenicity of TEVGs,their growth potential,and the long-term influence of implanted TEVGs in the body must be *** recent advances in TEVG fabrication have yielded promising results,more research is needed to achieve the most feasible methods for generating optimal *** article reviews multiple aspects of TEVG fabrication,including mechanical requirements,extracellular matrix components,cell sources,and tissue engineering *** potential of periodic hydrostatic pressurization in the production of scaffold-free TEVGs with optimal elasticity and stiffness is also *** the future,the integration of multiple technologies is expected to enable improved TEVG performance.

Is the measurement of drain amylase content useful for predicting pancreas-related complications after gastrectomy with systematic lymphadenectomy?

Cyclic moving average control approach to cylinder pressure and its experimental validation

Cyclic variability is a factor adversely affecting engine performance. In this paper a cyclic moving average regulation approach to cylinder pressure at top dead center （TDC） is proposed, where the ignition time is adopted as the control input. The dynamics from ignition time to the moving average index is described by ARMA model. With this model, a one-step ahead prediction-based minimum variance controller （MVC） is developed for regulation. The performance of the proposed controller is illustrated by experiments with a commercial car engine and experimental results show that the controller has a reliable effect on index regulation when the engine works under different fuel injection strategies, load changing and throttle opening disturbance.

Cooperative function of antioxidant and redox systems against oxidative stress in male reproductive tissues

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced under oxidative stress, such as high oxygen concentration and during the metabolic consumption of oxygen molecules. Male reproductive tissues appear to be continuously exposed to ROS produced by active metabolism. In addition, spermatozoa must pass through a high oxygen environment during the mating process. Thus, to maintain viable reproductive ability, a protective mechanism against oxidative stress is of importance. Here, we overview our current understanding of the cooperative function of antioxidative and redox systems that are involved in male fertility. Superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase are major enzymes that scavenge harmful ROS in male reproductive organs. In turn, glutathione and thioredoxin systems constitute the main redox systems that repair oxidized and damaged molecules and also play a role in regulating a variety of cellular functions. While glutathione functions as an antioxidant by donating electrons to glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin donates electrons to peroxiredoxin as a counterpart of glutathione peroxidase. In addition, aldo-keto reductases, which detoxify carbonyl compounds produced by oxidative stress, are present at high levels in the epithelia of the genital tract and Sertoli cells of the testis. Since these systems are involved in cross-talk, a comprehensive understanding will be required to maintain the physiological functions of male reproductive system.

Phase-Plane Invariant Analysis of Pressure Fluctuations in Fluidized Beds

Partial agglomeration is a major problem in fluidized beds. A chaotic analytical method based on the phase-plane invariant of the pressure fluctuations in the fluidized beds has been used to warn of agglomeration at an early stage. Cold tests （no combustion） and hot tests （combustion） in fluidized beds show that the phase-plane invariant of the pressure fluctuations can distinguish the dynamic behavior of fluidized beds with different flow rates in cold tests. With combustion, when the flow rate was kept constant, agglomeration was detected very early by looking at the phase-plane invariant. The phase-plane invariant can be used to distinguish changes in fluidized beds due to changes in the flow rate, agglomeration, or various other factors. Therefore, this reliable agglomeration early warning system can be used for better control of circulating fluidized beds.

Electroacupuncture improves neuronal function by stimulation of ascending peripheral nerve conduction in rats with spinal cord injury

OBJECTIVE: To establish a method of transient sciatic nerve blockade and to examine the involvement of the ascending peripheral nerve pathway in the therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture at Zusanli(ST 36) in rats with spinal cord injury(SCI).METHODS: We examined the transient effect of daily lidocaine administration into the posteromedial part of the greater trochanter on sciatic nerve function using electrophysiological examination and histopathology of the sciatic nerve. Rats were divided into three groups: an SCI group(SCI without treatment), an SCI with electroacupuncture treatment(SCI-EA) group, and an SCI with nerve block and electroacupuncture(SCI-NB-EA) group(nerve block was achieved by lidocaine administration to transiently block the ascending peripheral nerve pathway). Behavioral tests and electrophysiological examinations were performed to evaluate recovery of neurological ***: Sciatic nerve conduction was normal immediately before daily lidocaine *** analysis also indicated normal sciatic nerve, confirming that lidocaine nerve blockade was suitable and reversible for transiently eliminating nerve transmission. Neurological function in the SCI-EA group was superior to that in the SCI group, while no differences were found between the SCI and SCI-NB-EA ***: Electroacupuncture treatment can promote recovery of neurological function. Facilitation of nerve conduction may play an important role in this recovery.

Origins of short gamma-ray bursts deduced from offsets in their host galaxies revisited

The spatial distribution of short Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in their host galaxies provides us with an opportunity to investigate their origins. Based on the currently observed distribution of short GRBs relative to their host galaxies, we obtain the fraction of the component that traces the mergers of binary compact objects and the one that traces star formation rate (such as massive stars) in earlyand late-type host galaxies. From the analysis of projected offset distribution and only based on population synthesis and massive star models, we find that the fraction of massive stars is 0.37+-00..4327 with an error at the 1σ level for a sample with 22 short GRBs in the literature. From these results, it is hard to accept that the origin of short GRBs with observed statistics is well described by current models using only the offset distribution. The uncertainties in observational localizations of short GRBs also strongly affect the resulting fraction.

Surgical approach for hepatitis C virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatitis C is a strong prognostic factor for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). Although liver resection and liver transplantation offer the chance of a cure for HCC,adequate management of co-existing infection with hepatitis C virus(HCV) is important to enable better long-term outcomes after surgery for HCV-related HCC. For patients undergoing liver resection,perioperative anti-viral treatment is recommended,since a decreased HCV viral load itself is reportedly associated with a lower tumor recurrence rate and a longer overall survival. For patients undergoing transplanatations for HCC complicated by end-stage liver disease,the post-transplant management of HCV infection is also necessary to prevent progressive graft injury caused by active hepatitis under the immunosuppressive condition that is needed after liver transplantation. Although only a few lines of solid evidence are available for postoperative antiviral treatment because of the limited indication and frequent adverse events caused by conventional high-dose combination interferon therapy,new direct acting anti-viral agents would enable interferon-free anti-viral treatment with a higher virologic response and minimal side effects.
