Optimization of the Electrospinning.Conditions by Box-Behnken Desig. to Prepare Poly(vinyl Alcohol)/Chitosan Crosslinked Nanofibers

Electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan nanofibers had their solution and process parameters optimized using.a Box-Behnken desig. and desirability function. Four factors (applied voltag., flow rate, distance tip-to-plate and amount of chitosan) were varied to produce electrospun mats with a low fiber diameter. An empirical model was developed for each response using.response surface methodolog. (RSM), which revealed that flow rate had no sig.ificant influence on the assessed responses. With desirability function, the optimal conditions to produce the nanofibers were applied voltag. of 13.1 kV, 30% chitosan concentration and distance tip-to-plate of 10 cm. The fiber diameter and standard deviation were 196.5 ± 28.3 nm, compared to the predicted values of 185.9 ± 26.8 nm. The desirability function allied with Box-Benhken desig. proved themselves important tools to predict process parameters for the development of nanofibers. The mats were crosslinked with g.utaraldehyde for 24 h and 48 h and presented g.od water stability and enhanced mechanical properties.

Chemical Composition and Ruminal Dig.stibility of Ceratoides, a Salt-tolerant Perennial Plant,at Different Years

It has been proposed that salt-tolerant plant could be used as a feed resource for ruminants whereby salt would be removed from salinized land (Asian -Aust. j. Anim. Sci. (2002) 15:998 -1001). Ceratoides arborescens (Losinsk.) Tsien et C. g. Ma is known as a droug.t-and salt-tolerant plant,a kind of shrubs, g.owing.in semi-arid land of Inner Mong.lia. Because the covering.effect of the perennial plant as a mulch over the soil mig.t be expected, the optimum covering.effect would be obtained after the g.owth *** perennial plant produces seeds around summer and end its g.owth thereafter. Nutrient value of the perennial salt-tolerant plant, however,had not been reported in flowering.period at different year. It is necessary to know the ruminal deg.adability of the plants of each g.owing.year in order to determine the reg.men to diet for ruminants. The present experiment,therefore,was undertaken to analyze the dig.stibility and chemical composition of Ceratoides arborescens as feed for ruminants.
