Tumor metastasis is the dominant cause of death in cancer patients. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying tumor metastasis are still elusive. The identi?cation of protein molecules with their expressions correlated to the metastatic process would help to understand the metastatic mechanisms and thus facilitate the development of strategies for the therapeutic interventions and clini- cal management of cancer. Proteomics is a systematic research approach aiming to provide the global characterization of protein expression and function under given conditions. Proteomic technology has been widely used in biomarker discovery and pathogenetic studies including tumor metastasis. This article provides a brief review of the application of proteomics in identifying molecular factors in tumor metastasis process. The combination of proteomics with other experimental ap- proaches in biochemistry, cell biology, molecular genetics and chemistry, together with the development of new technologies and improvements in existing method- ologies will continue to extend its application in studying cancer metastasis.

Type Ⅳ paraesophageal hernia(PEH) is very rare, and is characterized by the intrathoracic herniation of the abdominal viscera other than the stomach into the chest. We describe a 78-year-old woman who presented at our emergency department because of epigastric pain that she had experienced over the past 24 h. On the day after admission, her pain became severe and was accompanied by right chest pain and dyspnea. Chest radiography revealed an intrathoracic intestinal gas bubble occupying the right lower lung field. Emergency explorative laparotomy identified a type Ⅳ PEH with herniation of only the terminal ileum through a hiatal defect into the right thoracic cavity. In this report, we also present a review of similar cases in the literature published between 1980 and 2015 in Pub Med. There were four published cases of small bowel herniation into the thoracic cavity during this period. Our patient represents a rare case of an individual diagnosed with type Ⅳ PEH with incarceration of only the terminal ileum.

Alternatively activated macrophages （M2 macrophages） promote central nervous system regeneration. Our previous study demonstrated that treatment with peripheral nerve grafts and fibroblast growth factor-1 recruited more M2 macrophages and improved partial functional recovery in spinal cord transected rats. The migration of macrophages is matrix metalloproteinase （MMP） dependent. We used a general inhibitor of MMPs to influence macrophage migration, and we examined the migration of macrophage populations and changes in spinal function. Rat spinal cords were completely transected at Ts, and 5 mm of spinal cord was removed （group T）. In group R, spinal cord-transected rats received treatment with fibroblast grow th factor- 1 and peripheral nerve grafts. In group RG, rats received the same treatment as group R with the addition of 200 μM GM6001 （an MMP inhibitor） to the fibrin mix. We found that MMP-9, but not MMP- 2, was upregulated in the graft area of rats in group R. Local application of the MMP inhibitor resulted in a reduction in the ratio of arginase-1 （M2 macrophage subset）/inducible nitric oxide synthase-postive cells. When the MMP inhibitor was applied at 8 weeks postoperation, the partial functional recovery observed in group R was lost. This effect was accompanied by a decrease in brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels in the nerve graft. These results suggested that the arginase-1 positive population in spinal cord transected rats is a migratory cell population rather than the phenotypic conversion of early iNOS^＋ cells and that the migration of the arginase-1^＋ population could be regulated locally. Simultaneous application of MMP in- hibitors or promotion of MMP activity for spinal cord injury needs to be considered if the coadministered treatment involves M2 recruitment.

Petrogenesis of Cenozoic Basaltic Rocks from Jiangsu Province,China:Evidence from Geochemical Constraints

Cenozoic （Miocene to Pleistocene） basaltic rocks in Jiangsu province of eastern China include olivine tholeiite and alkali basalt. We present major, trace element and Sr-Nd isotopic data as well as Ar-Ar dating of these basalts to discuss the petrogenesis of the basalts and identify the geological processes beneath the study area. On the basis of chemical compisitions and Ar-Ar dating of Cenonoic basaltic rocks from Jiangsu province, we suggest that these basalts may belong to the same magmatic system. The alkali basalts found in Jiangsu province have higher ~FeO, MgO, CaO, Na20, TiO2 and P205 and incompatible elements, but lower A1203 and compatible elements contents than olivine tholeiite which may be caused by fractional crystallization of olivine, pyroxene and minor plagioclase. In Jiangsu basaltic rocks the incompatible elements increase with decreasing MgO/~FeO ratios. The primitive mantle-normalized incompatible elements and chondrite-normalized REE patterns of basaltic rocks found in Jiangsu province are similar to those of OIB. Partial loss of the mantle lithosphere accompanied by rising of asthenospheric mantle may accelerate the generation of the basaltic magma. The 143Nd/144Nd vs. S7Sr/S6Sr plot indicates a mixing of a depleted asthenospheric mantle source and an EM1 component in the study area. According to Shaw＇s equation, the basalts from Jiangsu province may be formed by 1%-5% partial melting of a depleted asthenospheric mantle source. On the basis of Ar-Ar ages of this study and the fractional crystallization model proposed by Brooks and Nielsen （1982）, we suggest that basalts from Jiangsu province may belong to a magmatic system with JF-2 as the primitive magma which has undergone fractional crystallization and evolved progressively to produce other types of basalts.

Background Post-operation pain is a very subjective phenomenon. The aim of this study was to find out the effects of acupuncture or electro-acupuncture on post-cesarean pain. Methods Sixty women, who had had spinal anesthesia during cesarean section at the Department of Obstetrics of China Medical University Hospital, were randomly assigned to the control group, the acupuncture group, and the electro-acupuncture group. After the operation, we applied subjects with acupuncture or electro-acupuncture on the bilateral acupuncture point, San Yin Jiao （Sp6）, and the patient controlled analgesia （PCA）. The first time of requesting morphine, the frequency of PCA demands in 24 hours, and the doses of PCA used were recorded double blindly. In addition, monitoring the subjects＇ vital signs, the opioid-related side effects, and the pain scores was done. Results The results showed that the acupuncture group and the electro-acupuncture group could delay the time of requesting morphine up to 10-11 minutes when compared with the control group. The total dose of PCA used within the first 24 hours was 30%-35% less in the acupuncture group and the electro-acupuncture group when compared with the control group, which was indicated in statistical significance. However, there was no significant difference between the acupuncture group and the electro-acupuncture group. The electro-acupuncture group＇s and the acupuncture group＇s pain scores were lower than the control group＇s within the first 2 hours. Both were statistically significant. However, two hours later, there were no significant differences of the visual analogue scale （VAS） scores between either of the treatment groups and the control group. Finally, the incidence of opioid-related side effects, such as dizziness, was less in the acupuncture group and electro-acupuncture group than in the control group. Thedistribution, enrichment, accumulation, and potential ecological risk of chromium （Cr） in the surface sediments of northern Kaohsiung Harbor, Taiwan, Chinawere investigated. Sediment samples from ten locations located between the river mouths and harbor entrance of northern Kaohsiung Harborwere collected quarterly in 2011 and characterized for Cr, aluminum,water content, organic matter, total nitrogen, total phosphorous, total grease, and grain size. Results showed that the Cr concentrations varied from 27.0 to361.9 mg/kgwith an average of （113.5 ± 87.0） mg/kg. High Cr concentrationwas observed near the jen-Gen River mouth. The mean Cr concentrationwas high at 255.5 mg/kg,whichwas at least 2 to 7 times than that of other sites. This might imply significant Cr contribution from upstream receiving tannerieswastewater into the jen-Gen River. The spatialdistribution of Cr reveals relatively high in the river mouth region, especially in jen-Gen River, and graduallydiminishes toward the harbor entrance region. This indicates that the major sources of Cr pollution from upstream industrial and municipalwastewatersdischarged along the river bank; and Cr maydriftwith sea current and bedispersed into open sea. Moreover, Cr concentrations correlated closely to the physical-chemical properties of the sediments,which suggested the influence of industrial and municipalwastewatersdischarged from the neighboring industrial parks and river basins. Results from the enrichment factor andgeo-accumulation index analyses imply that the jen-Gen River sediments can be characterized as moderate enrichment and none to medium accumulation of Cr, respectively. However, results of potential ecological risk index indicate that the sediment has low ecological potential risk. The results can provide valuable information todeveloping future strategies for the management of river mouth and harbor.
