Anti-inflammatory effects of alkaloid enriched extract from roots of Eurycoma longifolia Jack

Objective: To examine the in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory effects of the alkaloid enriched extract(ELA) from the roots of Eurycoma longifolia. Methods: The in vitro antiinflammatory effects of ELA were evaluated by examining its inhibitory activities against nitric oxide(NO) production and inducible nitric oxide synthase(iN OS) and cyclooxygenase2(COX-2) expressions in lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. The level of NO produced in the culture media was determined by Griess method. The i NOS and COX-2 protein expressions were analyzed by Western blot. The in vivo effect of ELA was evaluated on LPS-induced septic shock in mice model. Mice mortality was monitored for5 days after injection of LPS. The chemical contents of the ELA were determined by using various chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. Results: The ELA was found to exhibit a significant anti-inflammatory effect in both in vitro and in vivo models. The results demonstrated that ELA dose-dependently inhibited LPS-induced NO production as well as the protein iN OS and COX-2 expressions. In the septic shock model, ELA dose-dependently protected mice from LPS-induced mortality. Further study on the isolated components of ELA indicated that 9,10-dimethoxycanthin-6-one may contribute significantly to the antiinflammatory effects of the extract. Conclusions: These results suggest that ELA exhibits the anti-inflammatory activity via suppression of pro-inflammatory mediators such as NO, iN OS,and COX-2 and protects mice from LPS-induced mortality in septic shock model.

The first aim of this article is to study the sharp singular(two-weight)Trudinger-Moser inequalities with Finsler norms on R^(2).The second goal is to propose a different approach to study a vanishing-concentration-compactness principle for the Trudinger-Moser inequalities and use this to investigate the existence and the nonexistence of the maximizers for the Trudinger-Moser inequalities in the subcritical ***,by applying our Finsler Trudinger-Moser inequalities to suitable Finsler norms,we derive the sharp affine Trudinger-Moser inequalities which are essentially stronger than the Trudinger-Moser inequalities with standard energy of the gradient.

Kriging-based reliability analysis of the long-term stability of a deep driftconstructed in the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone

Callovo-Oxfordian(COx)claystone has been considered as a potential host rock for geological radioactive waste disposal in France(Cigéo project).During the exploitation phase(100 years),the stability of drifts(***/alveoli)within the disposal is assured by the liner,which includes two layers:concrete arch segment and compressible *** latter exhibits a significant deformation capacity(about 50%)under low stress(long-term stability of ***,by focusing only on the purely mechanical behavior,this study aims at investigating the uncertainty effect of the COx claystone time-dependent properties on the stability of an alveolus of Cigéo during the exploitation *** describe the creep behavior of COx claystone,we use Lemaitre’s viscoplastic model with three parameters whose uncertainties are identified from laboratory creep *** the reliability analysis,an extension of a well-known Kriging metamodeling technique is proposed to assess the exceedance probability of acceptable stress in the concrete liner of the *** open-source code Code_Aster is chosen for the direct numerical evaluations of the performance *** Kriging-based reliability analysis elucidates the effect of the uncertainty of COx claystone on the long-term stability of the concrete ***,the role of the compressible material layer between the concrete liner and the host rock is also highlighted.

Mosquito Control, Killing off the Females

In addition to causing discomfort, female mosquitoes introduce disease-carrying viruses and bacteria into the bloodstream of their victims. There are numerous publications describing the uses of sugary mosquito baits with promising results. Without temperature control measures however, these methods are mainly useful for only nectar-feeding insects, including male mosquitoes, because the warmth of the blood is a condition for the females to locate their meals. The efforts required to keep the baits fresh against the natural spoiling process make them less attractive or impractical to implement. These experiments address these issues by using warm baits of water, sugar, boric acid, and antibiotics. Overnight, the general areas became clear of blood-sucking female mosquitoes while in numbers, the harmless males concentrated into the immediate vicinities. Control vs. experiment protocol established no other logical explanation for this phenomenon other than that females were attracted and killed by the bait. As expected, there was no female mosquito’s activity in these areas. There weren’t many left to do the work.

Prediction of the precessing vortex core in the Francis-99 draft tube under off-design conditions by using Liutex/Rortex method

The turbulent flow in the draft tube of a Francis turbine is very complicated while working under off-design conditions. Although the off-design conditions were widely studied, the vortex core line in the draft tube of a Francis turbine with splitter blades is not well understood, especially the vortex rope property. This letter presents a prediction of the behavior of the vortex rope in the draft tube of the Francis-99 turbine obtained by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD), where the Liutex/Rortex method, as the most recent vortex definition, is applied to analyze the periodical precession of the vortex rope in the draft tube cone. The advantage of this Liutex/Rortex method is shown by its enhanced ability to represent the vortex rope structurewith the vortex-core lines. Furthermore, since it seems to be very hard to define a sharp boundary surface for the whole vortex structure, it is advantageousfocusing only on the vortex core line,by which different vortex structures can be clearly differentiated. The evolution of the vortex core and the process of the vortex breakdown in the draft tube are revealed, which might help to comprehend the development of the turbulent flow in the draft tube.

Rare-earth free sensitizer in NaLuCrF_4:Er upconversion material

Upconversion phosphors are known as a material system that can convert near-infrared light into visible/ultraviolet emissions by sequentially absorbing multiple photons. The studies on upconversion materials often use two rare earth(RE) ions as a sensitizer-activator pair. We investigated the influences on luminescence intensity depending on Cr-doping content(x) of hexagonal NaLu_(0.98-x)Cr_xF4 Er_(0.02)(x = 0-0.9)upconversion material by substituting Lu^(3+) ions with Cr^(3+)in the absence of Gd^(3+). The change in upconversion luminescence intensity appears with saddle-like shape. We suggest that Cr^(3+) ions play the dual role as a constituent in host lattice and a sensitizer in the upconversion process. Optimal conditions for gaining the strongest upconversion emission correspond to x = 0.3-0.5, where there are effective energy transfers between Cr^(3+) and Er^(3+) ions and Cr-Er dimers. Apart from these values, the emission intensity decreases rapidly which can be ascribed to the absence of multiple-photon absorption for the case of low Cr^(3+) contents, and to the coupling between Cr^(3+) and/or Er^(3+) ions for the case of high Cr^(3+)contents. Magnetization and electron-spin-resonant measurements were performed to understand the correlation between the optical and magnetic properties.

Adaptive Relaying Protocol for Decode and Forward Full-Duplex System over Rician Fading Channel: System Performance Analysis

In this paper, the system performance of a decode-and-forward(DF) full-duplex(FD) adaptive relaying network over the Rician fading environment is proposed, analyzed and demonstrated. In the first stage, the system is presented with the energy harvesting and information transmission processes. After that, the analytical expressions of the achievable throughput, the outage probability, and symbol error ratio(SER) were proposed, analyzed and demonstrated. Finally, the analytical results are also demonstrated by Monte-Carlo simulation in comparison with the closed-form expressions in the influence of the key system parameters. The results show that the analytical and simulated results match for all possible parameter values.
