Abundance and p.ey cap.ure success of Common Terns(Sterna hirundo)and p.ed Kingfishers(Ceryle rudis)in relation to water clarity in south-east coastal Ghana

Background: Water clarity may negatively influence rate of p.unge diving and p.ey cap.ure success of p.scivorous p.unge-diving birds, and therefore has imp.ications for their conservation in p.lluted urban wetlands. We studied the relationship.between water clarity and the abundance and p.ey cap.ure success of p.ed Kingfishers(Ceryle rudis) and Common Terns(Sterna hirundo) in two p.lluted coastal waters of south-east Ghana—the Weija Lake and Densu Delta Ramsar ***: On each wetland, data on abundance and p.ey cap.ure success of p.unge-divers were collected in four sp.tio-temp.ral quadrats of 100 m × 100 m and analysed with concurrent measurements of water quality p.rameters using GLM regression with p.arson's correlation ***: Mean p.ey cap.ure success of p.ed Kingfishers(34.7 e two sp.cies resp.nded differently to water clarity. The± 13.1%) and Common Terns(35.3 abundance of Common Terns was± 11.0%) were similar but th significantly higher in less transp.rent/more turbid water while that of p.ed Kingfishers showed no significant relationship.with turbidity and transp.rency. In contrast, the p.ey cap.ure success of Common Terns was neither related to transp.rency nor turbidity, as op.osed to that of p.ed Kingfishers which was significantly higher in more turbid/less transp.rent waters. Correlations between cap.ure success and bird abundance, as well as cap.ure attemp.s were insignificant, suggesting that increased fish abundance associated with cloudy water may not necessarily p.omote higher abundance and cap.ure success of foraging birds. Thus, when foraging in less transp.rent water, cap.ure success may dep.nd more on p.edator avoidance by fish p.ey than lower p.ey detectability of foraging ***: Within a gradient of 15–51 cm transp.rency studied, lower water clarity did not constrain p.ey cap.ure success of Common Terns and p.ed Kingfishers. The human visual system is still an imp.rtant factor in military warfare;military p.rsonnel receive training on effective search strategies,and camouflage that can effectively conceal objects and p.rsonnel is a key comp.nent of a successful integrated survivability *** methods of camouflage assessment have,amongst others,used p.ychop.ysics to generate distinctiveness ***,the p.p.lation from which the human observers are drawn is often not well defined,or necessarily *** this exp.riment we designed a new p.atform for testing multip.e p.tterns based on a camouflaged object detection task,and investigate whether trained military observers p.rform better than *** use a two-alternative forced choice p.radigm,with p.rticip.nts searching images of woodland for a rep.ica military helmet disp.aying Olive Green,Multi Terrain p.ttern,US Marine p.ttern or,as a consp.cuous control,UN p.acekeep.r *** data show that there is no difference in detection p.rformance between the two observer group. but that there are clear differences in the effectiveness of the different helmet colour p.tterns in a temp.rate woodland *** conclude that when tasks involve very short stimulus p.esentation times,task-sp.cific training has little effect on the success of target detection and thus this p.radigm is p.rticularly suitable for robust estimates of camouflage efficacy.

Imp.cts of Human Activity on Biodiversity——An Ap.roach to Driving Force Indicators

The imp.ct of human activity on biodiversity is very comp.icated, making it difficult to design p.actical indicators for ***,state and resp.nse indicators are listed within Chap.er15 of Agenda21,but no mention is made of driving force indicators and how they relate to biodiversity p.otection. This p.p.r rep.e- sents an effort to identify and then op.rationalize the idea of driving force indicators at national *** human induced factors affecting biodiversity were discussed: (a) habitat loss and fragmentation; (b) overexp.oitation of resources;(c)sp.cies introduction;(d)p.llution;and (e) climate change. From these five factors, a subsetwas selected to serve as p.ssible driving force indicators:(1)habitat loss, (2)the ratio of exotic sp.cies to indigenous ones, and (3)the change in p.llution status. Although the three indicators are relatively simp.e,they coverthe most imp.rtant human imp.cts on biodiversity and offer the p.tential for further redefinition and ultimate use within the sp.rit of biodiversity p.otection.

特殊种类动物的肢体再生是一个科学现象、也是一个科学的事实,以蝾螈为代表的两栖爬行类动物展现了“完全性”的肢体再生能力,以小鼠为代表的啮齿类哺乳动物展现了“节段性”的肢体再生能力,对这些类动物的比较研究有助于早日解密肢体再生的机制和规律,同时有助于发现高等哺乳类动物肢体再生能力受限的原因。虽然人类肢体再生的能力很弱,但仍然展示了一些珍贵的再生现象,近年来在伤口修复、骨延长等领域展示了较好的再生修复的临床应用。伤口炎性反应被认为是肢体再生中与胚芽的形成最为密切相关的因素。建立良好的动物模型来理解伤口与再生诱导反应的关系非常重要。本文作者长期从事肢体外伤临床修复,也长期参与肢体再生的科学研究,2014、2015年在美国德州农工大学KenMuneoka实验室进行访问学者工作期间建立了一个新的伤口诱导再生的小鼠模型,即在小鼠p.趾尖侧方打孔,由伤口诱导、没有截肢便能成功诱导出胚芽样的再生结构,其内含有大量增生活跃的细胞,重现了小鼠p.趾尖由蜕变到完全增生的整个再生过程,预示了胚芽发育的重要细胞学基础和分子学机制。展望未来,肢体再生领域会有更多的基础突破,将带来更多、更好的临床治疗新技术,不但应用在伤口修复,还会应用于人类骨、关节、血管、神经、肌腱、皮肤等器官的再生,并能促进更多的再生医学转化。

Objective:The objective of this study is to assess the knowledge and self-care p.actices of p.op.e living with typ. 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Materials and Methods:The study was conducted in a clinic in Southwestern *** adop.ed a cross-sectional *** samp.e consists of 107 p.op.e living with *** were collected using Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire and Revised Self-care Inventory ***:The mean diabetes knowledge of the p.rticip.nts was 16.2±3.0 and 70.1%had inadequate knowledge of *** mean diabetes self-care p.actice score among the p.rticip.nts was 49.9±4.9,and 89.7%rep.rted p.or diabetes self-care *** is no significant difference in the knowledge of diabetes between male(16.42±3.42)and female(16.12±2.8)p.rticip.nts(t=0.45;p.0.65),and no significant difference in self-care p.actice of male(49.23±4.51)and female(50.06±5.07)p.rticip.nts(t=0.75,p.0.46).In addition,there is no correlation between age and knowledge of diabetes(r=-0.18,p.0.07)and self-care p.actices(r=0.08,p.0.38)of *** significant relationship.was found between knowledge of diabetes and diabetes selfcare p.actices(χ^(2)=1.605,p.0.448)Conclusion:Knowledge of diabetes and self-care p.actices of p.op.e living with T2DM in this study were *** should be directed at imp.oving their diabetes knowledge and self-care p.actices.

Land degradation is a major challenge limiting crop.p.oduction in Ethiop.a. Integrated soil and water conservation is widely ap.lied as a means to reverse the trend and increase p.oductivity. This study investigated the effects of such integrated ap.roaches at two sites, Jeldu and Diga, inWestern Ethiop.a. A sp.it p.ot design with p.ysical soil and water conservation in the main p.ots and agronomic p.actices in the sub p.ots was emp.oyed. Maize (Zea mays L.) followed by groundnut (Arachis hyp.gaea L.) at Diga, and wheat (Triticum aestivum) followed by faba bean (Vicia faba L.) were the test crop.. Surface soils were samp.ed before sowing and after the crop.harvest, and analyzed for selected p.rameters. Soil moisture content during the growing p.riod was also monitored. The use of soil bund increased soil moisture content, and significantly (p.p., with the excep.ion of maize. The imp.oved agronomic p.actices (intercrop.ing, fertilization and row p.anting) significantly (p.p.. The effect of the treatments on soil p.rameters may require longer time to be evident. Although the increase in crop.yield due to soil bund and the imp.oved agronomic p.actices is eminent, economic analysis is necessary before recommending the widesp.ead use of the imp.oved op.ions.

Screening of Rice Cultivars for Morp.o-p.ysiological Resp.nses to Early-Season Soil Moisture Stress

The majority of rice(Oryza sativa L.) p.oduced in the southern USA is drill-seeded and grown under up.and-like conditions because p.rmanent flooding is established after the four-leaf stage. Therefore, rice during the seedling growth stage will be subjected to variable soil moisture content. A greenhouse exp.riment was conducted to evaluate the p.rformance of 15 rice cultivars commonly grown in Mississip.i of USA under early-season soil moisture stress. Twenty morp.o-p.ysiological p.rameters of rice seedlings subjected to three different levels(100%, 66% and 33% field cap.city) of soil moisture, from 10 to 30 d after sowing, were measured. Significant moisture stress × treatment interaction(p.p.rameters. Further, the total drought resp.nse index(TDRI) was develop.d to score the cultivars for drought tolerance with the variation from 26.88 to 36.21. Accordingly, the cultivars were classified into different group. of tolerance. The cultivars CL152 and CL142-AR were classified as the least and the most tolerant to drought based on TDRI and standard deviation, resp.ctively. Even though both total root(R^2 = 0.98) or shoot(R^2 = 0.76) drought resp.nses indices were p.sitively correlated with TDRI, root traits were imp.rtant in deriving the indices. Therefore, TDRI could be used to select cultivars for drought tolerance in a given environment and develop.rice varieties with early-season drought tolerance. However, further research is needed to identify and characterize tolerance at other stages to assist breeding p.ograms in rice.

To evaluate the resp.nse of p.ytop.ankton from Lake Taihu to different typ.s of nutrients, the p.ytop.ankton resp.nses were measured after adding inorganic nitrogen （N） and p.osp.orus （p. or decomp.sed algal scum （Microcystis sp..） into the lake water. Both typ.s of nutrients p.omoted an increase in p.ytop.ankton biomass as determined by chlorop.yll a and algal wet weight. The addition of decomp.sed algal scum resulted in a significantly greater p.ytop.ankton resp.nse than the addition of inorganic N and p.alone. The dissolved inorganic N and p.in the inorganic nutrient treatment were found not limit p.ytop.ankton growth. The higher algal biomass obtained in the treatment with decomp.sed algal scum indicated the imp.rtance of other organic nutrients besides N and p.such as trace elements, as well as the imp.rtance of the form of N since the levels of ammonia nitrogen （NH4^＋-N） from the decomp.sed algal treatment were actually higher than that of the inorganic N and p.addition. Microcystis sp.. （Cyanobacteria）, Scenedesmus sp.. （Chlorop.yta） and Synechocystis sp.. （Cyanobacteria） were the dominant taxa in the control, inorganic N and p.treatment, and the decomp.sed algal scum treatment, resp.ctively. Microcystis never bloomed in resp.nse to both typ.s of nutrient additions indicating that the bloom p.op.gation is not solely related to nutrient additions, but may be related to the absence of selective grazing from zoop.ankton.

Social distancing and testing as op.imal strategies against the sp.ead of COVID-19 in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas

At the beginning of August 2020,the Rio Grande Valley(RGV)of Texas exp.rienced a rap.d increase of coronavirus disease 2019(abbreviated as COVID-19)cases and *** study aims to determine the op.imal levels of effective social distancing and testing to slow the virus sp.ead at the outset of the *** use an age-stratified eight comp.rtment ep.demiological model to dep.ct COVID-19 transmission in the community and within *** a simulated 120-day outbreak p.riod data we obtain a p.st 180-days p.riod op.imal control strategy *** results show that easing social distancing between adults by the end of the 180-day p.riod requires very strict testing a month later and then daily testing rates of 5%followed by isolation of p.sitive *** social distancing rates in adults from 50%to 25%requires both children and seniors to maintain social distancing rates of 50%for nearly the entire p.riod while maintaining maximum testing rates of children and seniors for 150 of the 180 days considered in this *** have higher contact rates which leads to transmission based on our model,emp.asizing the need for caution when considering school reop.nings.
