Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease （COPD） is characterized by chronic irreversible inflammation and progressive decline in lung function. While smoking and other environmental agents （e.g., air pollutants） are common causes of COPD, the major challenges in managing this condition are the persistent inflammation and functional deterioration which are not reversed by removal of precipitating agents （e.g., smoking cessation） or treatment with anti-inflammatory agents.

The article proposes two agricultural paradigms to address global food production sustainability. First, precision agroecology may unite production-oriented and ecological agriculture, but it offers distinct solutions based on data, innovation, and decision-analysis technologies. The author demonstrates how precision technology and agroecological principles can transform agriculture by 1) minimizing inputs with optimization prescriptions, 2) replacing self-sustaining inputs with location variable rate technology, 3) integrating functional ecosystems into agroecosystems with exact preservation technology, 4) hooking up farmers and consumers via value-based food ecosystems, and 5) establishing equitable agroecology. Hence, precision agroecology provides a rare opportunity to integrate indigenous practices and contemporary technologies to revolutionize farming practices. Precision agroecology can tackle agriculture’s most serious sustainability issues in a world in flux.

A single-channel electroencephalography(EEG)device,despite being widely accepted due to convenience,ease of deployment and suitability for use in complex environments,typically poses a great challenge for reactive brain-computer interface(BCI)applications particularly when a continuous command from users is desired to run a motorized actuator with different speed profiles.In this study,a combination of an inconspicuous visual stimulus and voluntary eyeblinks along with a machine learning-based decoder is considered as a new reactive BCI paradigm to increase the degree of freedom and minimize mismatches between the intended dynamic command and transmitted control signal.The proposed decoder is constructed based on Gaussian Process model(GPM)which is a nonparametric Bayesian approach that has the advantages of being able to operate on small datasets and providing measurements of uncertainty on predictions.To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method,the GPM is compared against other competitive techniques which include k-Nearest Neighbors,linear discriminant analysis,support vector machine,ensemble learning and neural network.Results demonstrate that a significant improvement can be achieved via the GPM approach with average accuracy reaching over 96%and mean absolute error of no greater than 0.8 cm/s.In addition,the analysis reveals that while the performances of other existing methods deteriorate with a certain type of stimulus due to signal drifts resulting from the voluntary eyeblinks,the proposed GPM exhibits consistent performance across all stimuli considered,thereby manifesting its generalization capability and making it a more suitable option for dynamic commands with a single-channel EEG-controlled actuator.

Abstract Weight making behaviours and best practice recommendations for various combat sports have been well documented,how-ever this is not true for Silat athletes.Pre-and post-weigh-in recommendations for other combat sports may not be suitable for Silat due to differences in weigh-in rules.Using a well-established questionnaire,this questionnaire-based cross sectional study examined weight making practices of Silat match athletes(n=102)competing at a national Pencak Silat championship.The 24.5%of athletes engaged in pre-competition weight loss,and the overall Rapid Weight Loss Score(RWLS)was 27.7±8.7,considerably lower than other combat sports.The median age when weight loss began was 17 years,with 32%(n=8)starting such practices under 17 years.Risky weight management practices such as the use of laxatives,diet pills and vomiting were less common than in other combat sports.Coaches and fellow athletes are key influencers of weight making practices,and dietitians were found be an underutilised resource.Appropriate measures to empower coaches and athletes with the knowledge and ability to guide and execute less detrimental weight making practice with the involvement of dietitians are suggested.The study findings provide information to establish Silat-specific dietary strategies to improve health and performance.

Objective To investigate the effect of Yinlai Decoction(YD)on the microstructure of colon,and activity of D-lactic acid(DLA)and diamine oxidase(DAO)in serum of pneumonia mice model fed with high-calorie and high-protein diet(HCD).Methods Sixty male Kunming mice were randomly divided into 6 groups by the random number table method:normal control,pneumonia,HCD,HCD with pneumonia(HCD-P),YD(229.2 mg/mL),and dexamethasone(15.63 mg/mL)groups,with 10 in each group.HCD mice were fed with 52%milk solution by gavage.Pneumonia mice was modeled with lipopolysaccharide inhalation and was fed by gavage with either the corresponding therapeutic drugs or saline water,twice daily,for 3 days.After hematoxylin-eosin staining,the changes in the colon structure were observed under light microscopy and transmission electron microscope,respectively.Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect the protein levels of DLA and DAO in the serum of mice.Results The colonic mucosal structure and ultrastructure of mice in the normal control group were clear and intact.The colonic mucosal goblet cells in the pneumonia group tended to increase,and the size of the microvilli varied.In the HCD-P group,the mucosal goblet cells showed a marked increase in size with increased secretory activity.Loose mucosal epithelial connections were also observed,as shown by widened intercellular gaps with short sparse microvilli.These pathological changes of intestinal mucosa were significantly reduced in mouse models with YD treatment,while there was no significant improvement after dexamethasone treatment.The serum DLA level was significantly higher in the pneumonia,HCD,and HCD-P groups as compared with the normal control group(P0.05).Conclusions YD can protect function of intestinal

Background The results from the ONgoing Telmisartan Alone and in combination with Ramipril Global Endpoint Trial （ONTARGET） indicated that the angiotensin-receptor blocker telmisartan was not inferior to the angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor ramipril in reducing the composite endpoint of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke or hospitalization for congestive heart failure in high-risk patients, and telmisartan was associated with slightly superior tolerability. The combination of the two drugs was associated with more adverse events without an increase in benefit. This study aimed to analyze the data from ONTARGET obtained from a subgroup of patients enrolled in China and to evaluate the demographic and baseline characteristics, the compliance, efficacy, and safety of the different treatment strategies in randomized patients in China. Methods A total of 1159 high-risk patients were randomized into three treatment groups： with 390 assigned to receive 80 mg of telmisartan, 385 assigned to receive 10 mg of ramipril and 384 assigned to receive both study medications. The median follow-up period was 4.3 years. Results The mean age of Chinese patients was 65.6 years, 73.6% of patients were male. The proportion of patients with stroke/transient ischemic attacks at baseline in China was two times more than the entire study population （47.7% vs 20.9%）. In Chinese patients the proportion of permanent discontinuation of study medication due to cough was 0.5% in the telmisartan group, which was much less than that in the combination or the ramipril group. There were no significant differences in the incidence of primary outcome among three treatment groups of Chinese patients. More strokes occurred in Chinese patients than in the entire study population （8.5% vs. 4.5%）. Greater systolic blood pressure reduction （-9.8 mmHg）, and more renal function failure were noted in the combination treatment group than in the ramipril or telmisartan group （2.6% vs. 1.6% and 1.0%）. We report herein a class of superatomic AU13 clusters stabilized by different N-heterocyclic carbenes(NHCs).The clusters show diverse metal surface structures,properties and functions as exemplified by:(1)the first anionic AU13 cluster[Au1g(NHC-1)sBr6],which has bulky NHC-1 ligands that lead to a rather open metal surface contributing to its high catalytic activity;(2)the tricationic cluster[Au13(NHC-2)sBr2]+which has bidentate,benzyl-rich NHC-2 ligands that make it ultra-stable and highly-luminescent,suitable for bio-imaging;and(3)by bearing two pyridyl groups on NHC-3,the dicationic cluster[Au:a(NHC-3)gClg]f+exhibits reversible and stable visible absorption and solubility responses to protonation/deprotonation cycles,making it a potential pH sensor(NHC-1=1,3-disopropylbenzimidazolin-ylidene;NHC-2=1,3-bis(1-benzyl-1H-benzimidazol-1-ium-yl)propane;NHC-3=1,3-bis(icolyI)benzimidazolin-ylidene).The study nicely demonstrates the importance of ligands in designing metal nanoclusters with desired functionalities.

Medical therapy for clinical benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH)has advanced significantly in the last 2 decades.Many new a1 antagonists and 5a reductase inhibitors(5ARi)are now commercially available.The practicing urologist must decide on the most appropriate medication for his patients,taking into consideration various factors like efficacy,dosing regime,adverse effects,cost,patient’s socioeconomic background,expectations,drug availability and his own clinical experience.The use of combination therapy added further to the complexity in clinical judgment when prescribing.We highlight some of the key points in prescribing a1 antagonists,5ARi and their combination,based on our viewpoints and experience as urologists in an Asian clinical setting.

武术电影是最被西方观众了解并喜爱的中国电影类型。本文专注于分析在西方和东方的认知领域中理解此类型影片的一些概念性方式。本文以电影中的东方主义概念为中心,电影人通过这种概念来展示东方主义的特征和理念,以表达文化认同和哲学问题。东方主义可能会被视为一种自我表达的手段,在东方主义的表面下也兼顾着西方的口味和期待。文章强调了东西方观点的并置与不同观念的影响,往往会导致误会和误解。假如能重组和重塑观念,武术电影可以成为东西方观念之间一块能自然接触的地带。本文考察了特定的几部武术电影以东方主义的路线重塑东西方观念的效果。关于东方如何将西方的价值观和标准与西方的东方学造成的传统压力融合在一起,东方主义也许能作为西方研究东方的学者中固有观念的一种另类视角。因此,从东方的学者及艺术家的角度考虑,东方主义可以作为表现东方的内在组成部分。本论文将涉及一批武术电影,包括此类型中具有开创性的东方主义作品,像日本导演黑泽明的作品(《罗生门》《七武士》)以及中国导演张艺谋的作品(《英雄》《长城》)等。
