Association of Fas/Apo1 gene promoter (-670 A/G) polymorphism in Tunisian patients with IBD

AIM： To detect a possible association between the polymorphism of the （-670 A/G） Fas/Apol gene promoter and susceptibility to Crohn＇s disease （CD） and ulcerative colitis （UC） in the Tunisian population. METHODS： The （-670 A/G） Fas polymorphism was analyzed in 105 patients with CD, 59 patients with UC, and 100 controls using the polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism method. RESULTS： Significantly lower frequencies of the Fas -670 A allele and A/A homozygous individuals were observed in CD and UC patients when compared with controls. Analysis of （-670 A/G） Fas polymorphism with respect to sex in CD and UC showed a significant difference in A/A genotypes between female patients and controls （P corrected = 0.004 ＂in CD patients＂ and P corrected = 0.02 ＂in UC patients＂, respectively）. Analysis also showed a statistically significant association between genotype AA of the （-670 A/G） polymorphism and the ileum localization of the lesions （P corrected = 0.048） and between genotype GG and the colon localization （P corrected = 0.009）. The analysis of IBD patients according to clinical behavior revealed no difference. CONCLUSION： Fas-670 polymorphism was associated with the development of CD and UC in the Tunisian population.

Purpose: The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze the characteristics of panfacial fractures and evaluate treatment results at the Maxillofacial, Stomatology and plastic surgery department at the AVICENNE military hospital over a period of 5 years. Patients and Methods: Forty eight patients with panfacial fractures were treated in Maxillofacial, stomatology and plastic surgery department of the AVICENNE Military Teaching Hospital between 2012 and 2017. The criteria for inclusion in the study were patients who had fractures of at least three of the four axial segments of the facial skeleton: frontal, upper midface, lower midface, and mandible. Results: 48 patients with panfacial fractures had a total of 116 subtypes of facial bone fractures. A total of seventeen (14.6%) LeFort II fractures in 16 (33.4%) patients were recorded, fifteen LeFort I fractures were recorded in 3 (6.2%) cases;seven (6%) LeFort III fractures were recorded in 5 (10.4%) cases, thirteen (11.2%) fractures of the NOF complex were recorded in 6 (12.5%) patients;sixteen (33.4%) patients had thirty eight (32.7%) fractures involving the mandible. Ten (8.6%) NOM (naso-orbito-maxilla) complex fractures occurred in 9 (18.7%) cases. 5 (10.4%) patients had a total of five (4.3%) CNEMFO (naso-ethmoido-maxillo-fronto-orbital) complex fractures. Our case series included five Comminuted premaxillary fractures and six Intermaxillary disjunctions. All 48 cases had facial deformities and thirty six had malocclusions. The treatment plan to reduce and fix the facial bone fractures was sequenced “Bottom up, Outside in”. Postoperative complications were reported, there were 5 cases whose malocclusions, 4 cases of zygomatic non-union or partial defects, 13 had enophthalmos and hypoglobus. Seven had scars from the trauma, 2 had lower eyelid ectropion, and 2 had temporal muscle atrophy. This paper proposes a generalization of the MoM-GEC method [1] needed for studying planar structures excited with a source located at perpendicular plan relative to circuit plan. A general formulation is detailed to allow modeling excitation of a planar structure with one or more sources located in plans other than the circuit plan. The numerical approach elaborated is based on the definition of new admittance operators and rotational transformations describing the transition from one plan to another. To validate this approach, we consider the case of a single source located in the perpendicular plan to the circuit.

AIM:To assess the possible association between PTPN22(R620W) gene polymorphism and inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).METHODS:One hundred and sixty-four patients with IBD 105 Crohn's disease(CD) and 59 ulcerative colitis(UC) and 100 healthy controls were *** of the PTPN22 gene 1858C→T polymorphism was performed by restriction fragment length polymorphism-polymerase chain reaction with Rsa Ⅰ ***:The genotypic and allelic frequencies of(R620W) PTPN22 gene polymorphism reveal a significant association of the PTPN22 620-W allele with IBD,compared to the healthy control group(OR:17.81,95% CI:4.18-21.86,P = 0.00001).Nevertheless,nodifference in this polymorphism was found between CD and UC *** significant association was found between the frequencies of genotypes of the PTPN22 gene with either the clinical features such as sex,age,age at disease onset,and extent of colitis,or the production of serological markers(anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibody in CD and perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody in UC).CONCLUSION:These observations confirm the association of IBD susceptibility with the PTPN22 1858T(620-W) allele in Tunisian patients.

Mesenchymal Mandibular Chondrosarcoma: A Case Report and Review of Literature

Introduction: Chondrosarcomas (CS) are malignant cartilaginous tumors of rare maxillary localization. Their evolution is generally slow in time. They have a high tendency for locoregional recurrence after surgical treatment. Their prognosis depends on their degree of differentiation and the quality of resection. The authors report a clinical case of mesenchymal mandibular chondrosarcoma (MC), which is considered to be a subtype of CS, and specify the epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic and evolutionary features of this tumor. Case Report: A 73-year-old woman reported in February 2018 in our department complained of a slowly enlarging mass involving the right part of the lower jaw for the last 18 months. On examination a firm multilobular painful mass was palpated with cortical expansion, occupying the right side. A CT scan with 3D reconstruction was achieved and showed osteolysis lesions and cortical thickening. The mass biopsy for histological examination found a grade I well-differentiated bone chon-drosarcoma. We performed a hemi-mandibulectomy with complete resection of the tumor. The anatomopathologic examination of the resection specimen was in favour of a grade II mesenchymal chondrosarcoma. No radiotherapy was needed. The patient’s follow up was uneventful. Discussion: CS grading is the key to its management. Low grade CS (grades I and II) of the facial skeleton are luckily the most common, they are best treated with a local resection using 1.5 cm margins for bone and soft tissue. According to published literature, CS was historically considered as a radio resistant tumor. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy were therefore mainly reserved for high-grade tumors and for non-operable lesions. However, radical local surgery appears to be the treatment of choice for low grade chondrosarcoma. Epilepsy is a complex disorder that is commonly associated with brain dysfunction, social isolation, and vocational difficulty. Each of these factors may contribute to the increased prevalence of psychiatric illness in epilepsy, but emerging evidence is providing a more complete and clearer elucidation of the problem. Clinical investigations have consistently demonstrated that depression has a large impact on subjective health status. In patients with recurrent seizures, depression appears to have a stronger association with quality of life than does the seizure rate. In fact, depression is second only to medication toxicity as the clinical factor that explains the greatest variance in quality of life. Only a small number of studies have investigated the plausible neurobiological mechanisms of depression in epilepsy, but preliminary data suggest that underlying brain dysfunction may be a more important predictor than vocational or social disability. Furthermore, specific aspects of hippocampal dysfunction may be a causal factor in the genesis and maintenance of depression in temporal lobe epilepsy. Current treatment recommendations for depression in epilepsy are similar to those for otherwise neurologically normal depressed patients, emphasizing the role of serotonin reuptake inhibitors, but certain antidepressants should be used with caution. Ongoing studies are attempting to define optimal treatment strategies, and more definitive data to guide clinical management are expected to become available in the near future.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has undergone major urban transformation after the establishment of the country in 1971. One noticeable change is urban expansion in terms of massive infrastructure, including new residential areas, highways, airports, and sophisticated transportation systems. Major landscape changes and disturbances, such as urban development, are among the major contributors to global climate change. Urban areas can be 3.5°C - 4.5°C warmer than neighboring rural areas, a phenomenon known as urban heat islands (UHIs). As such, urban development in the UAE was expected to follow a similar pattern and to be a major contributor to the country’s impact on global climate change. Analyses of multi-temporal (1988-2017) land surface temperature (LST) data obtained from Landsat satellite datasets over a desert city in the UAE showed unexpected results. Urbanization of desert surfaces in the study area led to a decrease of 3°C - 5°C in the overall LST. This was attributed to the associated expansion of green spaces in the newly developed urban areas, the expansion of date plantations and perhaps a cooling in the previously desert surface. Therefore, the UHI effect was not well demonstrated in the studied desert surfaces converted to urban areas.

Surface Morphology Investigation of Tunisian Dromedary Hair

In raw materials of dromedary hair, there are two distinct fibre populations： The fine one is of textile relevance and the coarse one is rather worthless and must be as a rule separated prior to spinning and subsequent processing. The fibre surface morphology and fibre fineness of Tunisian dromedary hair has been investigated by means of scanning electron microscope （SEM）. SEM microscopic method provides the fibre diameter, the scale shape, the scale frequency and scale height. The results show that dehaired dromedary fibre presents a relatively low mean fibre diameter （≈ 17 μm） with a high coefficient of variation （CV ≈ 25%）. The scales of the dromedary fibre are on average extremely long and quite visible, they tend not to protrude from the fibre, appear almost convex, and provide a wavy appearance in profile of the relatively coarse fibre. On counting the scale frequency, that is, the number of scale margins within a determined fibre length of 100 μm on the surface of a fine （diameter 〈 30 μm） and coarse （diameter 〉 30 μm） dromedary fibre, comes out roughly five at eight and eight at twelve scale margins, respectively. The mean height of the cuticle scale is 0.12μm and 0.24 μm, respectively, for fine and coarse dromedary fibre. These explain why dromedary fibres present a soft touch due to the prominence of the scale edges. This aspect of the surface structure has a high correlation with the felting capacity of the matter, and contributes to the concepts of handle and gloss.

Abandoned Quarries in the Akreuch Area (Western Morocco): Inventory of Flora for a Rehabilitation Strategy

Quarrying is an activity contributing to the vitality of the Moroccan economy. However, most of these quarries were abandoned at the end of extraction and became dump and later a place of uncontrolled landfills. The number of restored or rehabilitated quarries is limited and this threatens several aspects of the environment, especially, the quality of surface and ground water, landscape, forests, etc. This also gives rise to increased erosion risk. The study identifies plant species covering 10 abandoned quarries in the region of Rabat, especially the Bouregreg River and its affluent Akreuch in order to define a strategy for their restoration or rehabilitation. Field surveys were led to locate and map 10 abandoned quarries and to sample plant species. Herbaria were established and species were identified and classified. The results of the study distinguished 46 different plant species spread over 45 genera and 27 botanical families. The most dominant family in the quarries visited is Asteraceae. These results will allow us to study the vegetation dynamics in these abandoned lands and serve as a basis, in the selection of appropriate species in eventual restoration or rehabilitation projects.
