To enhance the communication between human and robots at home in the future, speech synthesis interfaces are indispensable that can generate expressive speech. In addition, synthesizing celebrity voice is commercially important. For these issues, this paper proposes techniques for synthesizing natural-sounding speech that has a rich prosodic personality using a limited amount of data in a text-to-speech (TTS) system. As a target speaker, we chose a well-known prime minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, who has a good prosodic personality in his speeches. To synthesize natural-sounding and prosodically rich speech, accurate phrasing, robust duration prediction, and rich intonation modeling are important. For these purpose, we propose pause position prediction based on conditional random fields (CRFs), phone-duration prediction using random forests, and mora-based emphasis context labeling. We examine the effectiveness of the above techniques through objective and subjective evaluations.

热带森林土壤微生物可以通过改变不同类型的磷酸酶活性来适应低磷的环境。以往的研究认为,低磷环境中土壤微生物更倾向于分解有机磷单酯键而非二酯键。因此,磷酸单酯酶(PME)的活性变化对生态系统磷输入的响应可能更敏感,其与磷酸二酯酶(PDE)活性的比值在磷输入后将显著降低。为了检验土壤微生物在低磷的热带森林中对不同磷酸酶的“投资”策略,我们在鼎湖山3种热带森林进行了长达10年的磷添加实验。与以往的研究不同,本研究发现长期磷添加没有改变原生林与次生林的PME:PDE比值,但显著提高了人工林土壤PME:PDE比值。结果表明,长期磷添加可能减少了凋落物或穿透雨来源的PDE,从而使其土壤PDE活性下降较PME降低更快,因而PME:PDE比值未能降低。

The <i>q</i>-Exponential Social Discounting Functions of Gain and Loss

Social discounting has been attracting attention in behavioral psychology, econophysics, and neuroeconomics. Several mathematical models have been proposed for social discounting;exponential discounting, hyperbolic discounting, a q-exponential discounting model based on Tsallis’ statistics. In order to experimentally examine the mathematical characteristics of the q-exponential social discounting models for gain and loss in humans, we estimated the parameters of the q-exponential social discounting models by assessing the points of subjective equality (indifference points) at seven social distances. We observed that gain was more steeply social-discounted than loss. Usefulness of the q-exponential social discounting model in social physics, econophysics, and cultural neuroeconomics are discussed.

Mathematical frameworks of quantum theory have recently been adopted in cognitive and behavioral sciences, to explain the violations of normative decision theory and anomalies in cognition. However, to date, no study has attempted to explore neural implementations of such “quantum-like” information processing in the brain. This study demonstrates that neural population coding of information with nonlinear neural response functions can account for such “quantum” information processing in decision-making and cognition. It is also shown that quantum decision theory is a special case of more general population vector cording theory. Future applications of the present theory in the rapidly evolving field of “psychophysical neuroeconomics” are also discussed.

Whether people tend to punish criminals in a socially-optimal manner (i.e., hyperbolic punishment) or not is unknown. By adopting mathematical models of probabilistic punishment behavior (i.e., exponential, hyperbolic, and q-exponential probability discounting model based on Tsallis thermodynamics and neuroeconomics, Takahashi, 2007, Physica A;Takahashi et al., 2012, Applied Mathematics), we examined 1) fitness of the models to behavioral data of uncertain punishment, and 2) deviation from the socially optimal hyperbolic punishment function. Our results demonstrated that, the q-exponential punishment function best fits the behavioral data, and people overweigh the severity of punishment at small punishing probabilities and underweigh the severity of punishment at large punishing probabilities. In other words, people tend to punish crimes too severely and mildly with high and low arrest rate (e.g., homicide vs. excess of speed limit), respectively. Implications for neuroeconomics and neurolaw of crime and punishment (Takahashi, 2012, NeuroEndocrinology Letters) are discussed.

The charge interaction and corresponding doping effect between single-walled carbonnanotubes (SWNTs) and various fullerene derivatives, namely, C60, phenyl-C61-butyricacid methyl ester (PC61BM), methano-indenefullerene (MIF), 10,100,40,400-tetrahydrodi[1,4]methanonaphthaleno[5,6]fullerene (ICBA), 1,4-bis(dimethylphenylsilylmethyl)[60]fullerene (SIMEF-1), and dimethyl(orthoanisyl) silylmethyl(dimethylphenylsilylmethyl)[60]fullerene (SIMEF-2), are investigated. A variety of analytical techniques,including field-effect transistors (FETs) made of horizontally aligned arrays ofSWNTs, is used as a means of investigation. Data from different measurements haveto be used to obtain a concrete evaluation for the fullerene-applied SWNTs. The datacollectively points toward the conclusion that fullerenes with high molecular orbitalenergy levels, namely, MIF, SIMEF-1, SIMEF-2, and PC61BM, induce p-type doping,while fullerenes with low molecular orbital energy levels, namely, ICBA and C60,induce n-type doping on the carbon nanotubes. Nevertheless, the SWNTs retained ptypecharacteristics because n-doping induced by the fullerenes are weak compared tothe p-doping of the water and oxygen on carbon nanotubes. This means that fullerenederivatives have the ability to fine-tune the energy levels of carbon nanotubes, whichcan play a crucial role in carbon nanotube-based electronics, such as solar cells, lightemittingdevices, and FETs.

A Parallel Circuit Simulator for Iterative Power Grids Optimization System

This paper discusses a high efficient parallel circuit simulator for iterative power grid optimization. The simulator is implemented by FPGA. We focus particularly on the following points: 1) Selection of the analysis method for power grid optimization, the proposed simulator introduces hardware-oriented fixed point arithmetic instead of floating point arithmetic. It accomplishes the high accuracy by selecting appropriate time step of the simulation;2) The simulator achieves high speed simulation by developing dedicated hardware and adopting parallel processing. Experiments prove that the proposed simulator using 80 MHz FPGA and eight parallel processing achieves 35 times faster simulation than software processing with 2.8 GHz CPU while maintaining almost same accuracy in comparison with SPICE simulation.

T1ρ/T2 mapping and histopathology of degenerative cartilage in advanced knee osteoarthritis

AIM To investigate whether normal thickness cartilage in osteoarthritic knees demonstrate depletion of proteoglycan or collagen content compared to healthy *** Magnetic resonance(MR) images were acquired from5 subjects scheduled for total knee arthroplasty(TKA)(mean age 70 years) and 20 young healthy control subjects without knee pain(mean age 28.9 years). MR images of T1ρ mapping, T2 mapping, and fat suppressed proton-density weighted sequences were *** TKA each condyle was divided into 4 parts(distal medial, posterior medial, distal lateral, posterior lateral) for cartilage analysis. Twenty specimens(bone and cartilage blocks) were examined. For each joint,the degree and extent of cartilage destruction was determined using the Osteoarthritis Research Society International cartilage histopathology assessment *** magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) analysis, 2 readers performed cartilage segmentation for T1ρ/T2 values and cartilage thickness *** Eleven areas in MRI including normal or near normal cartilage thickness were selected. The corresponding histopathological sections demonstrated mild to moderate osteoarthritis(OA). There was no significant difference in cartilage thickness in MRI between control and advanced OA samples [medial distal condyle, P = 0.461;medial posterior condyle(MPC), P = 0.352; lateral distal condyle, P = 0.654; lateral posterior condyle, P = 0.550],suggesting arthritic specimens were morphologically similar to normal or early staged degenerative *** T2 and T1ρ values from the MPC were significantly higher among the patients with advanced OA(P= 0.043). For remaining condylar samples there was no statistical difference in T2 and T1ρ values between cases and controls but there was a trend towards higher values in advanced OA patients.
