Background: Perinatal asphyxia is a common cause of mortality and of morbidity including motor and neurodevelopmental abnormalities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the post-hospital outcome of neonates treated for perinatal asphyxia at the Douala Gynaeco-Obstetric and Pediatric Hospital (DGOPH) in Cameroon. Patients and Methods: We conducted a hospital-based cross-sectional study with both a retrospective and prospective data collection, conducted over a period of 3 months and involving neonates above 34 weeks of gestational age who were managed for perinatal asphyxia at DGOPH from August 2015 to February 2020. Socio-demographic, perinatal, motor, nutritional and neuro-developmental out-of-hospital data were recorded. The assessment of the child’s psychomotor development was evaluated through gross motor skills, fine motor skills, language and social contact. We calculated the development quotient (DQ) by dividing the developmental age (DA) by the actual age (RA) of the patient. The data were entered and analyzed using excel and Stata version 15 software. Results: Among the 58 newborns included in our study, males were the most represented (59%). The mean age was 36.5 ± 14.16 months (Extremes: 12 months and 66 months). The majority of patients were born at term (79%), had a birth weight between 2500 and 4000 grams (69%), were resuscitated (95%), and had an Apgar score th minute of life (67%). SARNAT stages II and III counted for 48%. Neurodevelopmental abnormalities were found in 25.5% of patients with gross motor delay (mainly tetraparesis) representing 23.5%, fine motor delay 27.5%, impairment in social contact 31% language speech delay. The majority of the children had a normal development quotient (78.4%). Conclusion: The short-term and long-term outcome of newborns who experienced perinatal asphyxia in our setting is marked by numerous impairments in developmental milestones leading to disability.

Background: Feco-oral transmitted diseases (FOTD) remain a public health issue, particularly in developing countries. Data concerning the carriage of Salmonella and intestinal parasites in children are available worldwide but are lacking in Cameroon. This study aimed to determine the asymptomatic carriage of Salmonella and intestinal parasites in children of two primary schools in Yaoundé. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from October 2017 to May 2018 in two primary schools (from rural and urban areas) in the 7th precinct of Yaoundé. Sociodemographic, clinical and paraclinical (rectal swab, direct examination of fresh stool and bacteriological culture on Hektoen medium) data were collected. Results: We included 368 (192 boys) pupils from both schools (184 in each school) with a mean age of 8.99 ± 2.21 years. None of the children was infected by Salmonella spp. Intestinal parasite prevalence was 9.80% (6.52% of children from the urban school vs 13.04% from the rural ones). The intestinal parasite prevalence tended to be higher in girls than in boys (11.98% vs. 7.39%). Among intestinal parasites, protozoa were the most widely found. Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia intestinalis were the most prevalent pathogenic intestinal protozoa (11.11% vs. 25% of all positive stool exams). The helminths, less frequent, were represented by Ascaris lumbicoides and Enterobius vermicularis. Introduction: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is among the most common infections in cirrhotic patients. Data on SBP are rare in Cameroon. This prompted us to carry out this study on patients with decompensated cirrhosis of the liver in Yaounde University Hospital Centre (YUHC). Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study from December 2015 to June 2016 in three units of YUHC. All patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis were included. Our sampling was consecutive. Diagnosis of cirrhosis was performed, based on clinical, biological and ultrasound criteria. A neutrophil count greater than 250 cell/mm3 in ascites fluid defined an SBP. Data on socio-demography, clinical presentation, and outcomes were collected. Results: We included 34 decompensated cirrhotic patients (15 males). Patients mean age was 57.5 ± 2 years (SBP positive: 48.7 ± 21.3 versus without SBP: 59.8 ± 19.5, p = 0.22). SBP diagnosis was made in 6 (17.7%) patients. Compared to patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis and without SBP, positive SBP patients had a higher pulse rate (p = 0.002) and respiratory rate (p = 0.02). Background: Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is a myeloproliferative blood neoplasia, characterized by the presence of a translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22 leading to the formation of the Philadelphia chromosome. Data on the biological profile of patients with CML at diagnosis are still lacking in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Cameroon. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out from January 2001 to July 2016 among patients recently diagnosed with CML at the Yaounde University Teaching Hospital, the Yaoundé Central Hospital and the Yaoundé General Hospital. Analyzed variables included socio-demographic, clinical presentation, the diagnosis means, biological parameters (hematological and biochemical). Sampling was consecutive. Results: We included 132 (76 males) patients with CML with a median age of 39.2 years at diagnosis. The 31 - 45 years age group was the most represented, with 40.9% of the study population. A risk factor was found in only 5 (3.8%) of patients. Clinical manifestations were recorded in only 27 (20.45%) patients, with fatigue being the commonest (10.6%). Almost all patients (128, 96.9%) have performed the karyotype while 22 (16.7%) have performed fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and 4 (3.0%) the PCR. At diagnosis, 66% of the patients were in the chronic phase (CP), 11.3% in accelerated phase (AP), and 22.7% in blast crisis (BC). All patients presented hyperleukocytosis, with a white blood cell mean of 128,362/mm3. Anemia was common (77.3%), usually moderate (61.4%). Thrombocytopenia was rare (8.3%), as far as basophilia (1.2%). Introduction: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a worldwide public health problem with multisystemic involvements including kidneys. We assessed the prevalence and determinants of kidney markers among HCV infected subjects. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to July 2017 in two referral centers in Yaoundé. Sociodemographic, clinical and paraclinical data were collected from patient’s records. Renal involvement was evaluated using estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) by Modification of Diet in Renal Disease’s (MDRD) equation, urine dipstick and albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR). An eGFR 2 was defined as low and reduced respectively. Albuminuria was defined by an ACR > 30 mg/g and divided into A1 (300 mg/g). Results: We included 65 (41.5% males) HCV infected patients with a mean age of 56.8 ± 10.5 years. HCV infection was diagnosed for more than 5 years in 54 (83.1%) patients. HCV viral load and genotype were available in 40 (61.5%) patients;viral load was high (>5.9 logs/mL) in 20 (50%) of them and genotypes 4 (40%), 1 (32.5%) and 2 (27.5%) were found in this population. The mean eGFR was 112.9 ± 31.9 mL/min/1.73 m2 with 14 (21.5%) and 4 (6.2%) patients having reduced and low eGFR respectively. Albuminuria (80%), leukocyturia (24.6%) and hematuria (4.6%) were the observed dipstick abnormalities. Median albuminuria (IQR) was 542.4 (238.7 - 961.5) mg/g, with 7 (11%), 12 (18%) and 46 (71%) patients in A1, A2 and A3 respectively. Background: Venous thromboembolic disease (VTE) is one of the main causes of cardiovascular death and a public health problem worldwide. It is?one of the most complications in admitted patients, particularly inlow-income settings. The epidemiological data on VTE are still lacking. Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study in three hospitals in Yaoundé. We retrospectively reviewed records of patients admitted for VTE from January 2013 to December 2017. We collected data on socio-demography, clinical presentation, venous Doppler/pulmonary CT scan, and outcome. Results: We included 93 patients (43 males) with VTE. Their mean age was 53.3 ± 16.6 years. There were 46 (49.5%) cases of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), 36 (38.7%) cases of Pulmonary Embolism (PE), and 11 (11.8%) cases of PE associated with DVT. The main risk factors were obesity/overweight (58.1%), immobility (43%), HIV infection (22.6%), prior admission (22.6%), and long trip (19.4%). The most frequent clinical presentation for PE was dyspnea (100%), tachypnea (87.2%), and chest pain (70.2%). For DVT, limb pain (93%), calf stiffness (86%), limb volume > 3 cm (82.4%) were the most common presentation. There were 9 (9.7%) in-hospital deaths. Mean hospital stay was 20.7 ± 30.8 days. Conclusion:VTE is underdiagnosed in our setting. Obesity and immobility were the main risk factors. Dyspnea and tachypnea were the main clinical presentation for PE whereas limb pain and calf stiffness were the main symptoms for DVT. In-hospital mortality is still high.

Background: Venous thromboembolic (VTE) disease burden is increasing worldwide, representing a major cause of cardiovascular death and public health problem. Pulmonary embolism (PE) is the most serious clinical presentation of VTE. Epidemiological and clinical data on PE are still lacking in Africa, particularly in Cameroon. This study aimed at determining the clinical features as well as imaging presentation and outcome of pulmonary embolism. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in three hospitals in Douala. We retrospectively reviewed patient records admitted for PE from January 2009 to May 2017. We collected data on epidemiology, clinical presentation, venous Doppler/pulmonary computed tomographic angiography (CTA), and outcome. Results: We included 103 patients (56 males) with PE. Their median age was 52 years. The main risk factors were obesity (49.5%), hypertension (35.0%), long trip (24.3%) and cancer (18.4%). The most frequent clinical presentations were dyspnoea (83.4%), chest pain (78.6%), and cough (40.8%). Additionally, pleural effusion (32.8%), atelectasis (25.7%) and pulmonary hyperlucency (20.0%) were the most frequent findings on chest X-ray. The main abnormalities found in electrocardiogram were sinus tachycardia (63.4%), S1Q3T3 aspect (37.6%) and right axial deviation (28.7%). Moreover, right cavities dilatation (26.0%), pulmonary artery hypertension (35.0%) and pulmonary artery dilatation (21.0%) were the main echocardiographic findings. Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) was the initial anticoagulant in all cases. There were 19 (18.4%) in-hospital deaths, and the mean hospital stay was 8.5 ± 5 days. Conclusion: PE is not rare in our setting. Obesity, long trip and cancer are the main risk factors, while dyspnoea, chest pain and respiratory distress are the main clinical presentation for PE. LMWH remains the therapeutic agent of choice. Lastly, in-hospital mortality is very high.

We report herein the case of a 55-year-old man who presented an acute hemolysis following a 6th cycle of FOLFOX regimen for a metastatic colorectal cancer;this patient had previously received 12 cycles in an adjuvant setting. He had presented attenuated signs during the previous cycle. This corresponded to an oxaliplatin-induced immune hemolytic anemia. This unfrequent side effect of oxaliplatin needs to be known in order to avoid severe complications.
