Amorphous silica fiber matrix biomaterials:An analysis of material synthesis and characterization for tissue engineering

Silica biomaterials including Bioglass offer great biocompatibility and bioactivity but fail to provide pore and degradation features needed for tissue *** we report on the synthesis and characterization of novel amorphous silica fiber matrices to overcome these *** silica fibers were fused by sintering to produce porous *** effects of sacrificial polymer additives such as polyvinyl alcohol(pVA)and cellulose fibers(CF)on the sintering process were also *** resulting matrices formed between sintering temperatures of 1,350-1,550◦C retained their fiber *** matrices presented pores in the range of 50-200μm while higher sintering temperatures resulted in increased pore *** addition to silica significantly reduced the pore diameter and porosity compared with silica matrices with or without the addition of *** pVA additive morphologically appeared to fuse the silica fibers to a greater extent and resulted in significantly higher compressive modulus and strength than the rest of the matrices *** matrices lost roughly 30%of their original mass in an in vitro degradation study over 40 *** matrices absorbed 500 wt%of water and did not change in their overall morphology,size,or shape with *** fiber matrices supported human mesenchymal stem cell adhesion,proliferation,and mineralized matrix *** silica fiber biomaterials/matrices reported here are biodegradable and porous and closely resemble the native extracellular matrix structure and water absorption *** the methodology reported here to alter matrix properties may lead to a variety of tissue engineering,implant,and drug delivery applications.

Tendon and ligament injuries are the most common musculoskeletal injuries,which not only impact the quality of life but result in a massive economic *** interventions for tendon/ligament injuries utilize biological and/or engineered grafts to reconstruct damaged tissue,but these have *** matrices confer superior physicochemical properties over biological grafts but lack desirable bioactivity to promote tissue *** incorporating drugs can enhance bioactivity,large matrix surface areas and hydrophobicity can lead to uncontrolled burst release and/or incomplete release due to *** overcome these limitations,we evaluated the delivery of a peptide growth factor(exendin-4;Ex-4)using an enhanced nanofiber matrix in a tendon injury *** overcome drug surface binding due to matrix hydrophobicity of poly(caprolactone)(pCL)-which would be expected to enhance cell-material interactions-we blended pCL and cellulose acetate(CA)and electrospun nanofiber matrices with fiber diameters ranging from 600 to 1000 *** avoid burst release and protect the drug,we encapsulated Ex-4 in the open lumen of halloysite nanotubes(HNTs),sealed the HNT tube endings with a polymer blend,and mixed Ex-4-loaded HNTs into the polymer mixture before *** reduced burst release from~75%to~40%,but did not alter matrix morphology,fiber diameter,or tensile *** evaluated the bioactivity of the Ex-4 nanofiber formulation by culturing human mesenchymal stem cells(hMSCs)on matrix surfaces for 21 days and measuring tenogenic differentiation,compared with nanofiber matrices in basal media ***,we observed that Ex-4 nanofiber matrices accelerated the hMSC proliferation rate and elevated levels of sulfated glycosaminoglycan,tendon-related genes(Scx,Mkx,and Tnmd),and ECM-related genes(Col-Ⅰ,Col-Ⅲ,and Dcn),compared to *** then assessed the safety and efficacy of Ex-4 nanofiber matrices in a full-thickness rat Achilles tendon

Electrical stimulation(ES)is predominantly used as a physical therapy modality to promote tissue healing and functional *** efforts in both laboratory and clinical settings have shown the beneficial effects of this technique for the repair and regeneration of damaged tissues,which include muscle,bone,skin,nerve,tendons,and *** collective findings of these studies suggest ES enhances cell proliferation,extracellular matrix(ECM)production,secretion of several cytokines,and vasculature development leading to better tissue regeneration in multiple ***,there is still a gap in the clinical relevance for ES to better repair tissue interfaces,as ES applied clinically is ineffective on deeper *** use of a conducting material can transmit the stimulation applied from skin electrodes to the desired tissue and lead to an increased function on the repair of that *** conductive(IC)polymeric scaffolds in conjunction with ES may provide solutions to utilize this approach *** IC formulations and their scaffolds may provide solutions for applying ES into difficult to reach tissue types to enable tissue repair and regeneration.A better understanding of ES-mediated cell differentiation and associated molecular mechanisms including the immune response will allow standardization of procedures applicable for the next generation of regenerative ***,along with the use of IC scaffolds is more than sufficient for use as a treatment option for single tissue healing and may fulfill a role in interfacing multiple tissue types during the repair process.

Contrasting Regional Responses of Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall to Exhausted Spring and Concurrently Emerging Summer El Nino Events

The inverse relationship between the warm phase of the El Nino Southern Oscillation(ENSO)and the Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall(ISMR)is well ***,some El Nino events that occur in the early months of the year(boreal spring)transform into a neutral phase before the start of summer,whereas others begin in the boreal summer and persist in a positive phase throughout the summer monsoon *** study investigates the distinct influences of an exhausted spring El Nino(springtime)and emerging summer El Nino(summertime)on the regional variability of *** two ENSO categories were formulated based on the time of occurrence of positive SST anomalies over the Nino-3.4 region in the *** ISMR’s dynamical and thermodynamical responses to such events were investigated using standard metrics such as the Walker and Hadley circulations,vertically integrated moisture flux convergence(VIMFC),wind shear,and upper atmospheric *** monsoon circulation features are remarkably different in response to the exhausted spring El Nino and emerging summer El Nino phases,which distinctly dictate regional rainfall *** dynamic and thermodynamic responses reveal that exhausted spring El Nino events favor excess monsoon rainfall over eastern peninsular India and deficit rainfall over the core monsoon regions of central *** contrast,emerging summer El Nino events negatively impact the seasonal rainfall over the country,except for a few regions along the west coast and northeast India.

Does litterfall from native trees support rainfed agriculture? Analysis of Ficus trees in agroforestry systems of southern dry agroclimatic zone of Karnataka, southern India

Trees of the genus Ficus, integral components of indigenous rainfed agro-ecosystems of the southern dry agro-climatic zone of Karnataka, southern India, have traditionally been associated with the ecological service of soil quality enhancement in addition to various direct use benefits. We assessed the soil enrichment service of Ficus benghalensis L. a common Ficus species in these agroforestry systems, by quantifying nutrient return via litter fall. Litterfall estimation and chemical analysis of litter showed that F. benghalensis trees produce 3,512 kg ha-1 of litter annually which, on decomposition, can satisfy up to 76.70 % of N, 20.24% of p and 67.76% of K requirements of dryland crops annually per hectare. This can lead to an avoided cost of compost of US $ 36.46 ha-1·a-1 in dryland farming systems. The slow rate of decay of Ficus litter, as revealed in litter decomposition studies indicates its potential as ideal mulch for dryland soils. We discuss the complementarity between Ficus litterfall and cropping patterns in Mandya, and its implications for rainfed agricultural systems.

本文提出了一种启发式神经网络计算平台,用于解决基于不同阶数泛函微分方程的非线性受电弓系统(pantograph systems based on functional differential equations,p-FDEs)中的初值问题(Initial value problems,IVps)。该方案利用了前馈人工神经网络(Artificial neural networks,ANNs)、基于遗传算法(Genetic algorithms,GAs)的进化计算技术,以及内点技术(Interior-point technique,IpT)。通过设定一个无监督学习误差,针对完全和不完全满足初始条件两种情况,利用ANNs创建了系统的两种数学模型。采用GA–IpT混合算法,对ANN模型的设计参数进行了优化。在GA–IpT中,GA是有效的全局搜索工具,IpT则用于快速的局部收敛。针对三种不同类型的1–3阶p-FDEs的IVps对该方案进行了测试。通过对比现有的精确解,确认了该方案的正确性。通过采用不同数量神经元的ANN模型进行了大量的数值实验,进一步验证了该方案的准确性和收敛性。

Helicobacter pylori infection and gastropathy:A comparison between Indonesian and Japanese patients

BACKGROUND An increasing trend in colorectal cancer(CRC)occurring at younger ages has been observed worldwide,even though incidence is declining in the general *** currently available guidelines still recommend CRC screening for older populations,despite an alarming rise in early-onset CRC *** stratification is necessary to further determine the population most at risk for early-onset ***,epidemiological data on related clinical characteristics and potential risk factors,especially in developing countries,have not been widely *** To investigate the prevalence,demographics,clinicopathologic features,and associated factors of young-onset CRC patients in a tertiary hospital in *** patients undergoing colonoscopy examination between 2008 and 2019,yielding a diagnosis of CRC were identified from medical *** subjects were classified into two groups according to their age at diagnosis,namely early-onset(18-49 years old)and late-onset(≥50-years-old).Demographic data,characteristics,and risk factors of both onset age groups were evaluated using the chisquare and Fisher’s exact *** Among 495 CRC patients confirmed by histopathology,205(41.4%)were classified as early-onset and 290(58.6%)as *** subjects in the earlyonset CRC group were male(53.7%),with 89.8%displaying adenocarcinoma histopathology.A majority(78%)of the early-onset CRC patients had left-sided tumors,with the rectum(41%)and rectosigmoid(17.6%)being the most common *** pain was the most frequent symptom in the early-onset CRC patients(55.6%),which was significantly higher than that in the late-onset CRC patients(43.8%,pppared to late-onset CRC *** proportion of subjects with suspected hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer(HNpCC)was also higher in the early-onset CRC group than in the late-onset age group(9.3%vs 4.1%,p<0.05).

AIM: To evaluate pronto Dry examination in patients with dyspepsia. METHODS: The study was conducted in patients with dyspepsia who underwent endoscopic examination in several endoscopic centers of several cities in Indonesia from January 2003 until April 2004. Biopsies for histo- pathologic examination were fixed with formalin and sent to Histopathologic Department to be analyzed and confirm the presence of H pylori infection. If H pylori was found positive, the density was calculated semi quanti- tatively. Histopathologic examination from gastric biopsy samples was interpreted based on the updated Sydney system classification. RESULTS: Of 550 patients, 309 (56%) were male and 241 (44%) were female with ages ranging from 15 to 82 years. Mean age was 44.98 ± 14.46 years. Mean age of male patients was 44.35 ± 13.85 years and mean age of female patients was 45.78 ± 15.19 years. Evaluation of endoscopic results showed gastric ulcer in 36 cases (6.5%) and duodenal ulcer in 20 cases (3.6%). Normal endoscopic finding was found in 45 cases (8.2%) and minimal disorder of gastritis and duodenitis were found in 246 cases (44.7%). One case of gastric cancer was identified. Of 56 cases which were positive based on the criteria used, 39 patients were positive with pronto Dry and 17 patients were negative with pronto Dry. Overall sensitivity and specificity of pronto Dry were 69.7% and 95.7% respectively. positive predictive value was 66.1% and negative predictive value was 96.4% and overall ac- curate rate was 92.9%. CONCLUSION: pronto Dry seems promising as a diag- nostic tool to detect H pylori more rapidly and accurately.
