Background: Over the last decades, many forest simulators have been developed for the forests of individual European countries. The underlying growth models are usually based on national datasets of varying size, obtained from National Forest Inventories or from long-term research plots. Many of these models include country-and location-specific predictors, such as site quality indices that may aggregate climate, soil properties and topography effects. Consequently, it is not sensible to compare such models among countries, and it is often impossible to apply models outside the region or country they were developed for. However, there is a clear need for more generically applicable but still locally accurate and climate sensitive simulators at the European scale, which requires the development of models that are applicable across the European continent. The purpose of this study is to develop tree diameter increment models that are applicable at the European scale, but still locally accurate. We compiled and used a dataset of diameter increment observations of over 2.3 million trees from 10 National Forest Inventories in Europe and a set of 99 potential explanatory variables covering forest structure, weather, climate, soil and nutrient ***: Diameter increment models are presented for 20 species/species groups. Selection of explanatory variables was done using a combination of forward and backward selection methods. The explained variance ranged from10% to 53% depending on the species. Variables related to forest structure(basal area of the stand and relative size of the tree) contributed most to the explained variance, but environmental variables were important to account for spatial patterns. Clinical relevance of stem cells in lung cancer

Lung cancer is the major cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide,it has one of the lowest 5-year survival rate,mainly because it is diagnosed in the late stage of the *** cancer is classified into two groups,small cell lung cancer(SCLC)and non-SCLC(NSCLC).In turn,NSCLC is categorized into three distinct cell subtypes:Adenocarcinoma,squamous cell carcinoma,and large cell *** is the most common lung cancer,accounting for 85%of all lung *** for lung cancer is linked to the cell type and stage of the disease,involving chemotherapy,radiation therapy,and *** improvements in therapeutic treatments,lung cancer patients show high rates of recurrence,metastasis,and resistance to *** stem cells(SCs)are undifferentiated cells capable of self-renewal and proliferation,are resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy and,due to their properties,could be involved in the development and progression of lung *** presence of SCs in the lung tissue could be the reason why lung cancer is difficult to *** identification of lung cancer stem cells biomarkers is of interest for precision medicine using new therapeutic agents directed against these cell *** this review,we present the current knowledge on lung SCs and discuss their functional role in the initiation and progression of lung cancer,as well as their role in tumor resistance to chemotherapy.

“Sitting-up vertigo as an expression of posterior semicircular canal heavy cupula and posterior semicircular canal short arm canalolithiasis”

Background:Vestibular symptoms on sitting-up are frequent on patients seen by vestibular ***,a benign paroxysmal positional vertigo(BPPV)variant which elicits vestibular symptoms with oculomotor evidence of posterior semicircular canal(P-SCC)cupula stimulation on sitting-up was described and named sitting-up vertigo BPPV.A periampullar restricted P-SCC canalolithiasis was proposed as a causal ***:To describe new mechanisms of action for the sitting-up vertigo BPPV ***:Eighteen patients with sitting-up vertigo BPPV were examined with a pre-established set of positional maneuvers and follow-up until they resolved their symptoms and clinical ***:All patients showed up-beating torsional nystagmus(UBTN)and vestibular symptoms on coming up from either Dix-Hallpike(DHM)or straight head-hanging *** out of 18 patients presented a sustained UBTN with an ipsitorsional component to the tested side on half-Hallpike maneuver(HH).A slower persistent contratorsional down-beating nystagmus was found in eleven out18 patients tested on nose down position(ND).Conclusions:Persistent direction changing positional nystagmus on HH and ND positions indicative of PSCC heavy cupula was found in 11 patients.A sustained UBTN on HH with the absence of findings on ND,which is suggestive of the presence of P-SCC short arm canalolithiasis,was found on 5 *** patients were treated with canalith repositioning maneuvers without success,but they resolved their findings by means of Brandt-Daroff *** propose P-SCC heavy cupula and P-SCC short arm canalolithiasis as two new putative mechanisms for the sitting-up vertigo BPPV variant.

The restoration of the Oratory of the Partal Palace in the Alhambra of Granada,Grand Prix Europa Nostra 2019

This research focuses on the latest restoration of the Oratory of the Partal Palace(2013–2017),a 14th-century palatine mosque in the Alhambra,one of the most important UNESCO-listed World Heritage Sites of *** restoration was awarded the Europa Nostra Grand Prix 2019,the most prestigious European heritage award,promoted by the European *** restoration revealed original inscriptions,decorative elements and constructive solutions from the Nasrid period that had been unknown to *** interpretation of these discoveries enabled a deeper understanding of Nasrid carpentry techniques as distinctive from their Christian-mudéjar *** dendrochronology tests of the original decorated timber framework covering the prayer space consistently dated its timber elements as having been cut during the autumn/winter of 1332–*** would prove that the Oratory had been conceived of and its construction initiated on a date earlier than its widely accepted attribution to Yusuf I(1333–1355),most likely during the rule of the earlier sultan Ismai’l I(1314–1325),who had already made several interventions in the Partal *** improved legibility of the last two 1846 and 1930 historical restorations has enabled the interpretation of the Oratory of the Partal Palace as a compendium of Spanish heritage preservation approaches over the last 180 years.

“Bad regenerators” die after spinal cord injury:insights from lampreys

In mammalian species, including humans, spinal cord in- jury （SCI） leads to permanent disability. A major cause of disability after SCI is the failure of axotomized descending axons to regenerate across the trauma zone and to reconnect to they appropriate targets distal to the site of injury. Cur- renfly, major research efforts are devoted to find new ways of promoting the regrowth of damaged descending axons. However, activation of axonal regrowth will depend on the survival of the axotomized descending brain neurons.

Platinum containing compounds have shown antineoplastic potential, but their clinical applications have been limited by high toxicity. Ruthenium containing complexes have long been known to be well suited for biological applications, and have long been utilized as replacements to popular platinum based-drugs. Here, we report a novel series of ruthenium（ll） arene compounds bearing thiosemicarba- zone and isonicotinylhydrazone ligands with potent anticancer activity their structure activity relationships and apoptosis was studied. The cytotoxic activity of the new ruthenium（ll） arene compounds has been evaluated in several cell lines （Molt 4/C8, LI 210, CEM, HL60 and BEL7402）. Among them, ten complexes were found to be excellent in vitro growth inhibitory activity against various cell lines with IC50 in the sub-micromolar range.

Population structure and range expansion:the case of the invasive gastropod Cyclope neritea in northwest Iberian Peninsula

Biotic invasions have a reputation for unpredictable ***,we report how slight changes in human activity responsible for the introduction and range expansion of a non-native mollusk have led to detectable differences in the genetics of the *** neritea is a non-predatory gastropod introduced to 2 areas of the European Atlantic:the northwest Iberian Peninsula(NWIP)and the French Atlantic coast(FAC).Shellfish seabed farming is intense in both areas but focuses on different commercial *** mitochondrial gene sequences,the lower genetic diversity recorded along the NWIP suggests a more homogeneous range of source populations than in the *** FAC,genetic diversity and haplotype composition in the NWIP correlate with the date of first occurrence of *** at each site rather than with geographical *** this pattern evokes the genetic signature expected under a serial-founder colonization model from a single initial enclave,a comparison with samples from potential source populations suggests that the NWIP probably experienced several independent *** jump dispersal pattern of *** in the NWIP,together with the observation that populations established in the same year are genetically undifferentiated,point to human transport as the most plausible explanation for the current range *** evidence for human-mediated dispersal,*** managed to develop a seemingly non-random genetic pattern in the *** is suggested that caution must be exerted when interpreting genetic patterns in invaders.

Differences in physiological integration between invasive and noninvasive introduced clonal species of Carpobrotus

Aims Clonal growth is associated with invasiveness in introduced plant species,but few studies have compared invasive and noninvasive introduced clonal species to investigate which clonal traits may underlie *** test the hypothesis that greater capacity to increase clonal growth via physiological integration of connected ramets increases invasiveness in clonal plants,we compared the effects of severing connections on accumulation of mass in the two species of the creeping,succulent,perennial,herbaceous genus Carpobrotus that have been introduced on sand dunes along the Pacific Coast of northern California,the highly invasive species Carpobrotus edulis and the co-occurring,noninvasive species Carpobrotus *** Pairs of ramets from four mixed populations of the species from California were grown in a common garden for 3 months with and without severing the stem connecting the *** simulate the effect of clones on soils in natural populations,the older ramet was grown in sand amended with potting compost and the younger in sand *** Findings Severance decreased net growth in mass by~60%in *** and~100%in ***,due mainly to the negative effect of severance on the shoot mass of the younger ramet within a *** to the hypothesis,this suggests that physiological integration increases growth more in the less invasive ***,severance also decreased allocation of mass to roots in the older ramet and increased it in the younger ramet in a pair,and the effect on the younger ramet was about twice as great in *** as in *** indicates that the more invasive species shows greater phenotypic plasticity in response to physiological integration,in particular greater capacity for division of *** could contribute to greater long-term growth and suggests that the division of labor may be a trait that underlies the association between clonal growth and invasiveness in plants.
