Variations in the prevalence of dementia in different ethnic groups have been reported worldwide, and a number of reviews have provided a picture of epidemiological studies in dementia research. However, little is known about epidemiological studies in Chinese populations. In this review, we searched PubMed and the Web of Science for original research articles published in English up to July 2013 on the prevalence, incidence, risk factors, and prognosis of dementia in Chinese populations worldwide. Except for the prevalence, we included only population-based follow-up studies. We identified 25 studies in elderly Chinese residents in China's Mainland, Hong kong, Taiwan, and Singapore, and found a higher prevalence of dementia in China's Mainland than in the other locations, which may be due to that the studies from China's Mainland are more recent than those from other locations. A notable increase in incidence was observed when dementia cases were diagnosed using 10/66 diagnostic criteria compared to other criteria. Studies on risk factors for dementia were limited and mostly from China's Mainland. Age, gender, education, smoking, and alcohol consumption were related to the risk of dementia in Chinese populations. Only two prognostic studies were identified, and age, gender, and residential area were related to the prognosis of dementia. In conclusion, the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors for dementia found in Chinese populations were comparable to other ethnic groups, but no conclusive results on prognosis were found. The differences in prevalence and incidence were influenced by the diagnostic criteria and the time of study. Longitudinal population-based studies on the incidence, risk factors, and prognosis of dementia in Chinese populations are required.

The prognosis of patients diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is often dismal, mainly due to late presentation, high recurrence rate, and frequent resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Accumulating evidence on the differential microRNA (miRNA) expression patterns between non-tumor and HCC tissues or between liver cancer stem cells (CSCs) and non-CSC subsets and the significant clinical implications of these differences suggest that miRNAs are a promising, non-invasive marker for the prognosis and diagnosis of the disease. This perspective article summarizes the current knowledge of miRNAs in liver CSCs and highlights the need for further investigations of the role of miRNAs in regulating liver CSC subsets for possible future clinical applications.

The newsvendor problem has been applied in various business settings. It is often assumed that the decision variable, i.e., order-up-to level, has no impacts on the holding costs for average inventory cycled in a given period, which is the difference between beginning and ending inventory levels on hand in that period. The average holding cost for this portion of inventory is conveniently and approximately calcutated as half the product of the unit holding cost and the expectation of the demand in one period if it is assumed that the inventory is approximately evenly consumed. It is a good approximation when the unit holding cost is significantly lower than the unit backorder cost as this optimal solution to inventory level is able to guarantee a low probability of understocking. However, if this condition does not hold, the approximation may deviate from the actual cost and cannot measure the expected holding cost for this portion of inventory. This paper examines the impact of the cycle stock holding cost on the newsvendor model and the conditions under which this portion of cost is not negligible.

Whether proportionate consolidation(PC) or the equity method(EM) provides more informative financial statements is a controversial issue. This study uses data from listed companies in Hong kong to investigate the value relevance of the EM compared with PC during 2005–2008 when the local wordfor-word equivalent HKAS 31 offered the same options. The results of this study provide evidence that PC does not offer higher value relevance than the EM. PC's horizontal aggregation of a portion of the operations, assets and liabilities of the jointly controlled entities with those of the venturer is less informative to investors than the EM's vertical aggregation.

Multidrug resistance(MDR)mediated by ATP binding cassette subfamily B member 1(ABCB1)is significantly hindering effective cancer ***,currently,no ABCB1-inhibitory drugs have been approved to treat MDR cancer clinically,mainly due to the inhibitor specificity,toxicity,and drug ***,we reported that three polyoxypregnanes(POPs)as the most abundant constituents of Marsdenia tenacissima(***)were novel ABCB1-modulatory pro-drugs,which underwent intestinal microbiota-mediated biotransformation in vivo to generate active *** metabolites at non-toxic concentrations restored chemosensitivity in ABCB1-overexpressing cancer cells via inhibiting ABCB1 efflux activity without changing ABCB1 protein expression,which were further identified as specific non-competitive inhibitors of ABCB1 showing multiple binding sites within ABCB1 drug *** POPs did not exhibit ABCB1/drug metabolizing enzymes interplay,and their repeated administration generated predictable pharmacokinetic interaction with paclitaxel without obvious toxicity in *** further showed that these POPs enhanced the accumulation of paclitaxel in tumors and overcame ABCB1-mediated *** results suggested that these POPs had the potential to be developed as safe,potent,and specific pro-drugs to reverse ABCB1-mediated *** work also provided scientific evidence for the use of *** in combinational chemotherapy.
