In situ characterization of particle formation in spray flame synthesis using wide-angle light scattering

Wide-angle light scattering(WALS)was used for in situ measurements of droplet and nanoparticle size distributions during the synthesis of titania and iron oxide particles from liquid precursor solutions in the standardized SpraySyn burner for spray flame *** was synthesized from titanium tetraisopropoxide(TTIP)and iron oxide from iron(II)nitrate nonahydrate(Inn)using ethanol(EtOH)as *** images were taken at heights up to 120 mm above the burner surface and classified into droplet and particle *** size distributions were derived from a sequential analysis of scattering data containing the oscillating Mie pattern,the lognormal size distribution parameters for spherical and fractal particle fractions from a multivariate approach on averaged particle scattering *** results show that the precursor addition leads to altered evaporation behavior and even droplet disruption probably induced by puffing or micro-explosions compared to pure *** the case of TTIP(a hygroscopic alkoxide),the synthesis of a large fraction of spheres was observed,while the nitrate Inn leads to the formation of mostly fractal aggregates.

EVA nEXUS-Phaco performance study

AIM:To investigate a novel phacoemulsification system“EVA nEXUS”(D.O.R.C.,Dutch Opthalmic Research Center)in comparison to the existing system“EVA”in clinical *** to compare both phacoemulsification systems in terms of efficiency,safety and postoperative inflammatory ***:In this study standardized cataract surgery was performed on both eyes of the study participant,using the“EVA system”(control group,n=20)on one eye and the“EVA nEXUS system”(intervention group,n=20)on the other *** patients with cataract LOCS Grading 1-3 and no accompanying eye diseases were included in this study.A total of 20 patients were included in this study,with each treatment arm including 20 *** surgery a 0.1 mL aqueous humor sample was collected 1min after phacoemulsification to measure the total prostaglanin E2 concentrations using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent *** endothelial cell count,visual and refractive outcomes,and anterior chamber flare were evaluated preoperatively,and 1d,1wk,and 3mo ***:There were no statistically significant differences between both groups regarding intraoperative safety parameters including effective phacoemulsification time(P=0.904),balanced saline solution flow(P=0.701)and total surgery time(P=0.565).Postoperative prostaglandin E2 levels,anterior chamber flare as well as endothelial cell loss tended to be lower in the nEXUS-Group,however not being statistically significant(P=0.718;0.164;0.486).Both systems provided similar clinical outcomes,regarding best corrected visual acuity and refractive parameters,showing no statistically significant differences between both ***:Both systems show a high level of safety and efficency with similar results in terms of safety parameters including postoperative inflammatory activity and endothelial cell loss as well as visual and refractive *** statistically not significant,the EVA nEXUS system tends to cause less postoperative inflammatio

Gastro esophageal reflux disease is associated with absence from work: Results from a prospective cohort study

AIM： To study the association of gastro-esophageal reflux disease （GERD） with the absence from work and to estimate the extent of loss in gross domestic product due to inability to work. METHODS： Analysis was based on the prospectively gathered data of a large European cohort study involving 6 215 symptomatic GERD patients （ProGERD）. Among these patients, 2 871 were initially employed. The calculation of the loss of gross domestic product was based on the assumption that the prevalence of GERD was about 15% in Germany. According to the German Federal Statistical Office, the mean gross wage of employees was 150 E/d in 2002. RESULTS： The data of 2 078 employed patients who were prospectively followed up for over 2 years were analyzed. At study entry, the patients reported a mean of 1.8 d per year of inability to work. During the prospective follow-up under routine clinical care, the proportion of patients reporting days with inability to work decreased from 14% to 6% and the mean number of days per year with inability to work decreased to 0.9 d. Assuming a prevalence of troublesome GERD of 15% in the employed German population, the loss of gross domestic product amounted to 668 million E/year in Germany. COnCLUSIOn： GERD causes a relevant impairment on the national economics by absence from work. The presented data demonstrate the importance of GERD, not only for patients and health insurance companies, but also for the community at large.

Machine Learning for heat radiation modeling of bi-and polydisperse particle systems including walls

We investigated the ability of four popular Machine Learning methods i.e.,Deep neural networks(Dnns),Random Forest-based regressors(RFRs),Extreme Gradient Boosting-based regressors(XGBs),and stacked ensembles of Dnns,to model the radiative heat transfer based on view factors in bi-and polydisperse particle beds including *** training and analyzing the predictive capability of each method,an adjustment of markers used in monodisperse systems,as well as an evaluation of new markers was *** the basis of our dataset that considers a wide range of particle radii ratios,system sizes,particle volume fractions,as well as different particle-species volume fractions,we found that(i)the addition of particle size information allows the transition from monodisperse to bi-and polydisperse beds,and(ii)the addition of particle volume fraction information as the fourth marker leads to very accurate *** terms of the overall performance,Dnns and RFRs should be preferred compared to the other two *** particle-particle view factors,Dnn and RFR are on par,while for particle-wall the RFR is *** demonstrate that Dnns and RFRs can be built to meet or even exceed the prediction quality standards achieved in a monodisperse system.
