Co-contamination of diesel fuel and heavy metals can be challenging for microbial remediation due to the complex composition of the fuel and the inhibitory effect of heavy *** is an urgent need to study this interaction to improve the pollutant removal efficiency in the Polar *** growth of an Antarctic bacterium,Rhodococcus *** studied by comparing the growth at the logarithmic phase under the effect of selected heavy metals(Pb,Cr,As,Cd,Cu,Zn,Ni,Hg and Co).The selected heavy metals inhibited the growth of the Rhodococcus *** diesel fuel in an order from highest to lowest of:Hg>Zn>Cd>Cu>Co>Ni>As>Pb>*** on diesel fuel co-contaminated with Hg and Zn were 2.95%and 5.71%,respectively compared to the no-metal control.A further experiment with various Zn concentrations was *** specific growth rate of Rhodococcus ***-contaminated with different concentrations of Zn showed a correlation coefficient(r)of 0.916,and was modelled with an exponential decay *** investigation is needed to determine the effect of low concentration of Zn on hydrocarbon *** is important to understand the relationships between microbes,hydrocarbons and heavy metals,especially in the Polar Regions because this interaction might be promising in treating hydrocarbon-polluted sites containing heavy *** data and results also provide baseline tools of bioremediation processes at low temperatures and the knowledge of the ecological roles of Rhodococcus *** Antarctica.

The Influences of CPTED on Fear of Crime and Sense of Community

Fear of crime varies considerably depending on its attitude towards environmental conditions. Sense of community and CPTED （crime prevention through environmental design） are believed to have an influence on fear of crime. This paper investigates the hypotheses of influences of CPTED on FOC （fear of crime） and SOC （sense of community）. A total of 171 respondents from the designated residential areas were involved in this study. The structural equation modeling technique was employed and the results indicate that CPTED has a direct influence on fear of crime and sense of community. However, no significant relationship was found between SOC and FOC.

The Effect of NaHCO<sub>3</sub>as Catalyst via Electrolysis

Renewable energy is a kind of energy that comes from natural sources like water, sunlight, wind and so on. Water electrolysis is currently the most dominant technology used for hydrogen production from renewable sources because of high energy conversion efficiency. In this present work, the effect of NaHCO3 via electrolysis?was studied. Stainless steel is chosen to be as the electrode and different concentration of NaHCO3 are used as alkaline solutions in electrolysis system. The rates of hydrogen gas produced using different concentration of NaHCO3 and pH value of every sample were measured. The experimental results that the performance of water electrolysis was highly affected by NaHCO3, the rate of hydrogen gas showed that 0.4 M of NaHCO3 and 65 ml/min at pH 8.2 are the best amount.

Objective:To characterise a collection of pili-carrying and none pili-carrying pneumococcal isolates of clinical origin for serotypes,antibiotic resistance and ***:In total,42 clinical isolates were collected between October 2017 and December *** isolates were analysed for antimicrobial susceptibility,serotype distribution,detection of pneumococcal virulence and pilus *** sequence typing was performed only for piliated isolates,followed by phylogenetic ***:The common isolation sites among the pneumococcal isolates were tracheal aspirate(28.6%),blood(26.2%),and sputum(23.8%).Fifty percent isolates were resistant to erythromycin,tetracycline(50.0%)and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole(43.0%).The most frequent were serotypes 19F(28.6%),6A/B(23.8%)and 19A(14.3%).Piliated isolates were detected in a small proportion(33.3%);64.3%were ***320 was the prevalent sequence type among the piliated isolates and genetically related to the Pneumococcal Molecular Epidemiology Network clones Taiwan19F-14(CC271).In the phylogenetic analysis,some piliated isolates showed a close association having similar ST320,carrying serotype 19A and both pilus genes indicating their clonal ***:Pneumococcal lineages of piliated isolates have been globally disseminated and pili could have played a role in the spread of antibiotic resistant clones.

Latent tuberculosis infection among medical students in Malaysia

Objective: This study aimed to determine prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection among medical students and tuberculosis exposure at the health facilities. Methods: A cross-section of study year 1(n=68) and year 5(n=75) medical students in a local university were recruited for latent tuberculosis infection testing using QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus and a questionnaire analyzed for multivariate risk. Results: The majority of the study were vaccinated with BCG. None of year 1 medical students were positive for latent tuberculosis infection, however, six(8.0%) year 5 students were tested positive for latent tuberculosis infection. A higher incidence of year 5 medical students claimed to be exposed to tuberculosis at health facility(65.3% vs. 4.4%) and a higher percentage reported contact with tuberculosis case over the preceding year compared to year 1 students(30.7% vs. 8.8%). Conclusion: We observed a higher incidence of latent tuberculosis infection and higher exposure to tuberculosis in health facilities among year 5 medical students. Baseline screening and monitoring for progression to tuberculosis infection may benefit tuberculosis management programs.

Conservation and Utilization of Crop Genetic Resources in Malaysia： Mardi＇s Effort

Malaysian Agriculture Research and Development Institute （MARDI） is the country＇s major custodian of the nation＇s crops genetic resources. It has a global responsibility in the conservation of genetic resources of banana, sweet potato and citrus, and national responsibility for the conservation of crops, such as rice, tropical fruits and some herbs and medicinal plant species. MARDI rice seed genebank at Seberang Prai in the state of Penang was established in 1984 and currently holds 12,770 registered rice accessions, of which 53% are of local origin. In addition, MARDI also conserves genes in the field, mostly for underutilized tropical fruit genetic resources. At present, about 168 species of underutilized, rare and wild tropical fruit species consisting of about 2,000 accessions, the largest in the country, are being conserved. The species include ＂kuini＂（Mangifera odorata）, ＂bacang＂（Mangifera foetida）, ＂binjai＂（Mangifera caesia）, ＂cerapu＂（ Garcinia praniana）, ＂rambai＂（Baccaurea motleyana）, ＂asam gelugor＂（ Garcinia atroviridis）, ＂terap＂（drthocarpus odoratissimus） and ＂pulasan＂（Nephellium rambutan-ake）. The accessions are mostly conserved ex situ in field genebanks located at the various MARDI stations throughout the country. Although the conservation of the various crop species genetic resources is important, the real challenge is enhancing its utilisation. The main objective of the paper was to share and disseminate information related to works conducted and strategies opted by MARDI on the conservation and utilization of crop genetic resources. Information on species of crops that are available in MARDI＇s genebank was also highlighted together with brief information of some of the associated traits of significant importance posses by those genetic resources.

With pathogenic bacterium,numerous studies have been conducted in developing new vaccines,and available pneumococcal vaccines have been implemented for the prevention of related ***,Streptococcus pneumoniae is known to have developed resistance to many of the proposed preventive *** a result,contemporary research,including our study,has reviewed how Streptococcus pneumoniae has become resistant to vaccines and to further determine how to prevent the negative effect of the non-vaccine serotype on vaccine serotype *** have been known as one of the bacteria that has highest preventive strength of vaccination provided to humans,where children’s immunity requires the vital of it,based on immunization schedule to boost their immune system against the diseases of high mortality and *** pneumococcal vaccines are derived from its strains called serotypes,and further research is being conducted to determine more potent vaccines from other pneumococcal virulence *** impose and implement the pneumococcal vaccine,the serotype distribution needs to be *** deal with this verification,clinical or carriage samples are required for the determination and differentiation of vaccine serotypes from non-vaccine *** Malaysia,the carriage rates are often limited to the clinical epidemiology of Streptococcus *** samples are more needed in tracking the vaccine efficacy for pre-and post-immunization to prevent and reduce pneumococcal diseases before they manifest into clinical ***,in this review article,we explore the mentioned highlights for sufficient discussion,discovery,and knowledgeable implementation of pneumococcal vaccine.

ERT Imaging of Gas-Liquid Mixing in Agitated Vessel

An investigation using Electrical Resistance Tomography （ERT） was carried out in order to characterize gas-liquid mixing in an agitated vessel. The experimental work was carried out in a 400 mm diameter agitated vessel that was fitted with four planes, 16 stainless steel electrodes. Agitation was carried out using the Lightnin Labmaster and Rushton turbine while conductivity data acquisition was carried out using the ITS P2000 ERT system. A Mathlab code was developed to construct a surface plot for gas hold-up from the ERT data. Various gas dispersion conditions such as flooded, loaded and fully dispersed were successfully characterized using the ERT technique.

In this letter,a humidity sensor is demonstrated by applying a whispering gallery mode(WGM)from a microsphere resonator onto the ZnO nanorods coated glass *** diameter of the microsphere was 234μm and the glass surface was coated with ZnO nanorods using the hydrothermal method at growth duration of 12 h.A significant response to humidity level ranging from 35%RH to 85%RH has been observed with the sensitivity of 0.0142 nm/%*** proposed humidity sensor has successfully employed to enhance interaction between the whispering gallery mode evanescent and surrounds analyte with the assistance of ZnO nanorods coated glass.
