We report on the biodegradation of pure hydrocarbons and chemotaxis towards these compounds by an isolated chlorophenol degrader,Pseudomonas strain *** biochemical and phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rDNA sequence identified Pseudomonas strain H as having 99.56% similarity with *** *** strain was able to degrade n-hexadecane,1-undecene,1-nonene,1-decene,1-dodecene and *** grew in the presence of 1-octene,while this hydrocarbons is toxic to other hydrocarbons *** strain H was also chemotactic towards n-hexadecane,kerosene,1-undecene and *** results show that this Pseudomonas strain H is an attractive candidate for hydrocarbon-containing wastewater bioremediation in controlled *** the classical standard techniques for detecting chemotaxis are not efficient at low bacterial concentrations,we demonstrate the use of the dynamic speckle laser method,which is simple and inexpensive,to confirm bacterial chemotaxis at low cell concentrations （less than 105 colony-forming unit per millilitre （CFU/mL）） when hydrocarbons are the attractants.

Structural changes in the gut microbial community have been shown to accompany the progressive development of colorectal *** this review we discuss recent hypotheses on the mechanisms involved in the bacteria-mediated carcinogenesis,as well as the triggering factors favoring the shift of the gut microbiota from a mutualistic to a pro-carcinogenic *** possible role of inflammation,bacterial toxins and toxic microbiota metabolites in colorectal cancer onset is specifically *** the other hand,the strategic role of inflammation as the keystone factor in driving microbiota to become carcinogenic is *** a common outcome of different environmental and endogenous triggers,such as diet,aging,pathogen infection or genetic predisposition,inflammation can compromise the microbiota-host mutualism,forcing the increase of pathobionts at the expense of health-promoting groups,and allowing the microbiota to acquire an overall pro-inflammatory *** inflammation in the gut,and favoring the bloom of toxigenic bacterial drivers,these changes in the gut microbial ecosystem have been suggested as pivotal in promoting *** this context,it will become of primary importance to implement dietary or probiotics-based interventions aimed at preserving the microbiota-host mutualism along aging,counteracting deviations that favor a pro-carcinogenic microbiota asset.

Rhythmic oscillatory patterns sustain cellular dynamics, driving the concerted action of regulatory molecules, microtubules, and molecular motors. We describe cellular microtubules as oscillators capable of synchronization and swarming, generating mechanical and electric patterns that impact biomolecular recognition. We consider the biological relevance of seeing the inside of cells populated by a network of molecules that behave as bioelectronic circuits and chromophores. We discuss the novel perspectives disclosed by mechanobiology, bioelectromagnetism, and photobiomodulation, both in term of fundamental basic science and in light of the biomedical implication of using physical energies to govern (stem) cell fate. We focus on the feasibility of exploiting atomic force microscopy and hyperspectral imaging to detect signatures of nanomotions and electromagnetic radiation (light), respectively, generated by the stem cells across the specification of their multilineage repertoire. The chance is reported of using these signatures and the diffusive features of physical waves to direct specifically the differentiation program of stem cells in situ, where they already are resident in all the tissues of the human body. We discuss how this strategy may pave the way to a regenerative and precision medicine without the needs for (stem) cell or tissue transplantation. We describe a novel paradigm based upon boosting our inherent ability for self-healing.

Background and Aims:Hepatitis B virus(HBV)biomark-ers have been used for a better categorization of patients,even though the lack of simple algorithms and the impact of genotypes limit their *** aim was to assess the usefulness of noninvasive markers for the identification of HBV inactive carriers(ICs)in a single-point evaluation and to design a predictive model for their ***-ods:This retrospective-prospective study included 343 consecutive HBeAg-negative ***,analytical,and virological data were collected,and a liver biopsy was performed if *** were classified at the end of follow-up as ICs,chronic hepatitis B and gray zone.A pre-dictive model was constructed,and validated by 1000-boot-strap ***:After 39 months of follow-up,298 subjects were ICs,36 were chronic hepatitis B CHB,and nine were gray ***-nine(25.9%)individuals re-quired a liver *** HBV DNA hazard ratio(HR)6.0,p<0.001),HBV core-related antigen(HBcrAg)(HR 6.5,p<0.001),and elastography(HR 4.6,p<0.001)were inde-pendently associated with the IC *** ACE score(HBV DNA,HBcrAg,elastography),obtained by bootstrapping,yielded an area under the receiver operating characteris-tics(AUROC)of 0.925(95%CI:0.880-0.970,p<0.001)for identification of *** AUROC for genotype D was 0.95,0.96 for A,0.90 for E,and 0.88 for H/*** ACE score of<1 had a positive predictive value of 99.5%,and a score≤12 points had a diagnostic accuracy of 93.8%.Conclusions:Low baseline HBV DNA,HBcrAg,and liver stiffness were in-dependently associated with the IC phase.A score including those variables identified ICs at a single-point evaluation,and might be applied to implement less intensive follow-up strategies.

Background: The present work is aimed at evaluating the effect of different inclusion levels of a partially defatted black soldier fly(Hermetia illucens,L.;HI) larva meal for ducks.A total of 192 female 3-day-old Muscovy ducklings(Cairina moschata domestica,Canedins R71 L White,Grimaud Freres Selection,France) were divided into 4 groups,assigned 4 different dietary treatments(6 replicates/treatment and 8 birds/replicate) and reared from 3 to 50 days of *** larva meal was included at increasing levels(0,3%,6% and 9%,HI0,HI3,HI6 and HI9,respectively) in isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets formulated for 3 feeding phases: starter(3–17 days of age),grower(18–38 days of age) and finisher(39–50 days of age).The growth performance and apparent total tract digestibility were evaluated during the trial using titanium dioxide as an inert marker(0.3% of inclusion).At 51 days of age,two birds per pen were slaughtered and histomorphological investigations were ***: The live weight and average daily gain showed a quadratic response to increasing HI meal in the grower period(minimum corresponding to the HI6 group).No effects of dietary inclusion levels were observed for the daily feed intake or feed conversion *** apparent dry matter and organic matter digestibility were not affected by the dietary treatment.A linear decrease was observed for the crude protein apparent digestibility in the starter period(minimum for the HI9 groups).The ether extract apparent digestibility increased linearly during the grower and finisher periods(minimum for the HI0 group).The morphometric indices were not influenced by the dietary ***: The inclusion of up to 9% of HI partially defatted larva meal in the diet of ducks did not cause any effect on growth performance,as well as the apparent ***,dietary HI inclusion preserved the physiological intestinal development.

Oxidative Stress (OS) is considered an underlying mechanism by which dysfunctional metabolism occurs in obese subjects but there are still very few studies in canine species. The purpose of this study was to evaluate simultaneously the effects of diet on body weight, oxidative and inflammatory status in a group of 12 adult dogs. The dogs were fed a maintenance diet, integrated with natural antioxidants, for a period of 6 months. At the beginning and the end of the trial, Body Condition Score (BCS) was evaluated and haematological (CBCs, Complete Blood Counts), oxidative parameters (d-ROMs, derivatives of Reactive Oxygen Metabolites;BAP, Biological Antioxidant Potential;Retinol;α-tocopherol) and inflammatory parameters (Fibrinogen;CRP, C Reactive Protein) were performed. Significant differences (p α-tocopherol, fibrinogen and CRP between the two periods of different diet. In this study, dogs showed an oxidative imbalance documented by the increase in d-ROMs and the reduction of BAP and retinol. Inflammatory parameters don’t change in relation to body weight like an alteration of the oxidative status could precede the onset of inflammation. The role of oxidative stress and of integration with antioxidants should be taken into special consideration in the dietary treatment in overweight dogs.

Clinical outcomes of direct-acting antiviral therapy in patients with compensated hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis

Aim: The aim was to assess the clinical impact of direct-acting antiviral treatment in patients with compensated hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis after one year of follow-up. Methods: An observational retrospective study was conducted on 129 consecutive patients with compensated cirrhosis treated in 2015, analyzing the evolution of liver function and the development of hepatocellular carcinoma and clinical decompensations. Results: The median follow-up time was 16 months. Most patients were males (73%), the mean age was 58.1 years and the most frequent genotype was 1b (52.2%). All participants were Child-Pugh A class at the start of the treatment and the median model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score was 7. Four patients (4.4%) suffered a decompensation: three episodes of ascites and one acute on chronic liver failure. The incidence of de novo hepatocellular carcinoma during the follow-up was 3.6%. Seven patients (7.8%) improved MELD score more than one point and in 11 patients (12.2%) it worsened more than one point. There was a significant improvement in the mean platelets count [P < 0.001, 95% confidence interval (CI): -26,360, -12,096] and in the mean albumin levels (P < 0.001, 95% CI: -322, -130) after treatment. Conclusion:Direct-acting antiviral treatment is not associated in the short term with a decrease in the development of hepatic decompensation or hepatocellular carcinoma compared to what it was reported for untreated compensated cirrhotic patients. There is an improvement in pre and post-treatment platelet counts and albumin levels showing a probable improvement of the hepatic function.
