Microalgae can be cultivated for producing high-valued products through the production of enzymes to offset the cost of CO_(2) sequestration,providing financial *** viability of algae in the photobioreactor needs to be monitored to ensure biologically active live *** this study,we explored a simple fluorometry method for differentiation of live and dead algal cells in photobioreactors by fluorescein diacetate(FDA)and propidium iodide(PI)fluorescence *** stains fluorescent green to the living cells while PI stains the dead cells,allowing the discrimination of live and dead *** method was evaluated using two green algae and two strains of cyanobacteria grown in shake flasks and a continuously stirred *** method was found applicable for Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Synechococcus 7002 but was not applicable for the cultures of Scenedesmus dimorphus and Synechococcus elongatus *** conclude that FDA is a good stain for monitoring live algal cells in photobioreactors but its applicability to individual species of algae must be evaluated.

The gene for the catalytic domain of thermostable endo-β-1,3-glucanase （laminarinase） LamA was cloned from Thermotoga maritima MSB8 and heterologously expressed in a bioengineered Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002. The mutant strain was cultured in a photobioreactor to assess biomass yield, recombinant laminarinase activity, and CO2 uptake. The maximum enzyme activity was observed at a oH of 8.0 and a temoerature of 70℃. At a CO2 concentration of 5%, we obtained a maximum specific growth rate of 0.083 h^-1 a biomass productivity of 0.42 g· L^-1·d^-1 a blomass concentration of 3.697 g.L^-1 , and a specific enzyme activity of the mutant strain of 4.325 ***^- 1 dry mass. All parameters decreased as CO2 concentration increased from 5% to 10% and further to 15% CO2, except enzyme activity, which increased from 5% to 10% CO2. However, the mutant culture still 1 1 grew at 15% CO2 concentration, as reflected by the blomass productwlty （0.26 g.L .d ）, biomass concentration （2.416 g.L^- 1）, and specific enzyme activity （3.247 ***^-1 dry mass）.

Pigs fed camelina meal increase hepatic gene expression of cytochrome 8b1, aldehyde dehydrogenase, and thiosulfate transferase

Comelina sotivo is an oil seed crop which can be grown on marginal lands. Camelina seed oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids （〉35%） and y-tocopherol but is also high in erucic acid and glucosinolates. Camelina meal, is the by-product after the oil has been extracted. Camelina meal was fed to 28 d old weaned pigs at 3.7% and 7.4% unt age 56 d. The camelina meal supplements in the soy based diets, improved feed efficiency but also significantly increased the liver weights. Gene expression analyses of the livers, using intra-species microarrays, identified increased expression of phase 1 and phase 2 drug metabolism enzymes. The porcine versions of the enzymes were confirmed by real time PCR. Cytochrome 8b1 （CYPSB1）, aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 （Aldh2）, and thiosulfate transferase （TST） were all significantly stimulated. Collectively, these genes implicate the camelina glucosinolate metabolite, methyl-sulfinyldecyl isothiocyanate, as the main xeniobiotic, causing increased hepatic metabolism and increased liver weight.

The exponential growth of food demand due to the increasing global population has the potential to seriously threaten the quality and quantity of food supplies due to climate *** study explores the utilisation of green urban spaces for achieving food self-sufficiency by investigating the extent to which sustainable urban farms could be used to reduce the consumption of imported produce in the *** also examines urban farming stakeholders'perspective on how food self-sufficiency can help realise the SDGs especially SDG 2(Zero hunger)and SDG 13(Climate action).The study adopts a mixed method approach through a survey with 115 respondents and semi-structured interviews conducted with 12 respondents from 4 different urban farming stakeholder *** findings of this study presented a strong correlation between stakeholders who had concerns about where their food came from and the carbon footprint of imported *** research shows that,urban farms will no doubt play a vital role in the future of food security in our cities/communities and that the SDGs could be realised through sustainable urban farms implemented within the relevant planning regulations/policies.

Non-pharmacological therapies for inflammatory bowel disease: Recommendations for self-care and physician guidance

We performed a scoping review on sought-after complementary therapies for patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD), specifically diet, physical activity and exercise(PA/E), and psychotherapy. We aim to update patients with IBD on therapies for self-care and provide physicians with guidance on how to direct their patients for the management of IBD. A search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PUBMED was completed in Sept 2016. Studies on diet, PA/E, or psychotherapy in patients with IBD were included. Medical Subject Heading terms and Boolean operators were used. The search was limited to full-text English articles describing an adult population. This review included 67 studies: Diet(n = 19); PA/E(n = 19); and psychotherapy(n = 29). We have made the following recommendations:(1) Diet: Consumption of diets rich in vegetables, fruit and soluble fiber may be beneficial in IBD. A trial of a low FODMAP diet can be considered in those patients with functional gastrointestinal symptoms. Restrictive diets are lacking in evidence and should be avoided;(2) PA/E: Regular lowmoderate intensity activity, including cardiovascular and resistance exercise, has been shown to improve quality of life(QOL) and may improve inflammation; and(3) psychotherapy: Therapies such as cognitive-behavioural interventions, mindfulness, hypnosis, and stress management have been shown to improve QOL, but evidence is limited on their impact on anxiety, depression, and disease activity. Overall, these complementary therapies are promising and should be used to treat patients with IBD from a more holistic perspective.

Treatment of Coats' disease: an analysis of pooled results

AIM: To elucidate the association of treatment modality to vitreoretinal fibrosis and traction retinal detachment(TRD) in Coats' ***: A PubMed search for Coats' disease with included studies describing eyes with clinical features and treatment course of Coats' disease. Binary logistic regression with fibrosis at presentation and treatment type as independent variables was performed to determine predictors of TRD historically(since 1921) and in the antivascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) era(since2007). Odds ratios(OR) with 95% confidence intervals(CI)***: Of 175 articles described 1183 eyes. Vitreoretinal fibrosis increased from presentation(5.4%) to follow-up(15.5%) and TRD increased from 0.44% to 3.9% at follow up. Laser was protective against vitreoretinal fibrosis(OR0.6, 95%CI 0.4-0.9) but TRD was borderline(OR 0.6, 95%CI0.3-1.1). Cryotherapy showed a higher association with TRD(OR 1.9, 95%CI 1.0-3.7) than with vitreoretinal fibrosis(OR 0.8, 95%CI 0.5-1.2). Similarly, intravitreal anti-VEGF alone was not associated with fibrosis(OR 1.1, 95%CI 0.6-1.8) nor TRD(OR 1.1, 95%CI 0.5-2.6) but the combination of laser and anti-VEGF therapy was protective [Fibrosis: 0.1(0.03, 0.35); TRD: 0.05(0.01, 0.23)] compared to anti-VEGF plus cryotherapy(P<0.001). Disease stage ≤2 B or ≥3 A was not associated with ***: Vitreoretinal fibrosis and TRD increase after treatment in Coats' disease. The combination of antiVEGF agents and cryotherapy may lead to higher risk for TRD. Presence of pre-treatment fibrosis is the highest risk factor for post-treatment worsening of vitreoretinal fibrosis and TRD.

Retrospective chart review of skin cancer presence in the wide excisions

AIM: To investigate cancer cell absence or presence in wide excision after biopsy of squamous cell carcinoma(SCC) and basal cell carcinoma(BCC) ***: 200 patients(100 BCC and 100 SCC) from the same dermatology clinic, who had positive margin upon biopsy, were selected from a computer generated randomized report. All selected patients had wide excision following biopsy. To determine the correlation of gender, age distribution and cancer absence, BCC and SCC cases were separated based on excision-cancer absent or present after wide excision. χ2 tests, Fisher's exact tests were used to analyze the ratio of male to female between excision-cancer absent and excision-cancer present patients, while Mann-Whitney U test were used to compare the age distribution in the two groups. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 16.0 for ***: Our retrospective chart review of the patients showed that cancer cells were absent in 49% of BCC patients(n = 100) and 64% of SCC patients(n = 100) who had previously had positive margins upon biopsy. Gender analysis showed the ratio of male to female(M/F) in the BCC arm was significantly higher compared with the SCC arm in those with excision-cancer absent(2.06 vs 0.66; P = 0.004; χ2 test). But M/F of excision-cancer absent and excision-cancer present in neither BCC nor SCC patients was statistically significant. Age adjustment showed no significant difference between excision-cancer absent and excision-cancer present in BCC and SCC patients. Nevertheless, in excision-cancer absent cases, the age distribution showed that the BCC patients were younger than SCC patients(average age 67 vs 74; P < 0.001; Mann-Whitney U test). In addition, our data also indicated that in the patient group of 71-80 years old, there were more SCC patients who showed excision-cancer absence(67.6% vs 39.4%; P = 0.02; χ2 test).CONCLUSION: Our study indicates that approximately 50% or more of BCC and SCC patients with positive margin
