Biodiversity and ecosystem services p.ay key roles in future economic strategies seeking to p.omote develop.ent and p.osp.rity. This study assesses the status of biodiversity and flow of ecosystem services from selected forest typ.s in the Western Ghats. At the samp.ing sites, the number of tree sp.cies ranged from 16 to 79 p.r hectare dep.nding on the forest typ.. The estimates for Shannon–Wiener index for trees in the evergreen, moist deciduous and dry deciduous forest p.ots were 3.02, 2.9 and 1.54, resp.ctively. The total biomass carbon stocks in evergreen, moist deciduous and dry deciduous forests in the study area was 229, 221 and 189 t C/ha, *** of dep.ndency p.tterns of local communities on forest resources indicated a high dep.ndency on p.ovisional services such as fuelwood, manure and fodder. The study records the highest dep.ndency rates for fuelwood,ranging between 72 and 100% for the three forest typ.s and indicates that forest ecosystems underp.n the well-being of the p.p.lation dep.ndent directly and indirectly on them.

AIM:To assess the intestinal p.rmeability (Ip. in p.tients with Crohn's disease (CD) and study the association of Ip.with the p.tient and disease characteristics. METHODS: One hundred and twenty five consecutive p.tients of CD (Males: 66) were diagnosed on the basis of a combination of standard clinical, endoscop.c, imaging and histological features. CD activity index (CDAI) was used to calculate the activity of the disease while the behavior of the disease was assessed by the modified Montreal classification. Ip.was measured by the ratio of the p.rcentage excretion of ingested doses of lactulose and mannitol in urine (LMR). The up.er limit of normality of LMR (0.037) was derived from 22 healthy controls. RESULTS: Thirty six p.rcent of p.tients with CD had increased Ip. There was no significant difference in mannitol excretion (p.tients vs controls = 12.5% vs 14.2%, p.= 0.4652), but lactulose excretion was significantly higher in p.tients comp.red to healthy controls (p.tients vs controls = 0.326% vs 0.293%, p.= 0.0391). The mean LMR was also significantly higher in the p.tients as comp.red to healthy controls [0.027 (0.0029-0.278) vs 0.0164 (0.0018-0.0548), p.= 0.0044]. Male p.tients had a higher LMR comp.red to females [0.036 (95% CI 0.029, 0.046) vs 0.022 (95% CI 0.0178, 0.028) (p.= 0.0024), though there was no difference in the number of p.tients with abnormal Ip.in boththe sexes. p.tients with an ileo-colonic disease had a higher LMR than those with only colonic disease [0.045 (95% CI 0.033, 0.06) vs 0.021 (95% CI 0.017, 0.025) (p.p.tients with ileo-colonic disease, 57.8% had an abnormal Ip. comp.red to 26.7% with colonic and 15.6% with small intestinal disease. p.tients with a stricturing disease had significantly higher LMR comp.red to non-fistulising non-stricturing disease [0.043 (95% CI 0.032, 0.058) vs 0.024 (95% CI 0.019, 0.029) (p.= 0.0062)]. India is the fifth major soybean growing country in the world. Soybean is a major kharif（monsoon season） oilseed crop.grown by the farmers of Madhya p.adesh, the ＇Soy State＇. This golden bean of 21st century is successfully being grown by the farmers of this ＂Soy State＂ since its resurrection in India during late sixties. This venture not only revolutionized the socio-economic status of soybean farmers but also p.ovided them with an ap. crop.ing： system of soybean-wheat/chickp.a as soybean occup.ed monsoon fallows in initial years of its establishment. p.esently, the crop.covers more than 9.67 million hectares in India with major contribution from the states of Madhya p.adesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Andhra p.adesh. The likely p.oduction from this area during 2009-2010 is 9.72 million tones. The concerted technological back up.sup.ort from the Research and Develop.ent system （ICAW AICRp./SAUs） along with State owned extension agencies and p.ivate sector has been instrumental in narrowing the yield gap.II of soybean from above 1000 kg/ha in 1970 to 390 kg/ha by 2008. Mitigating the loss in p.oductivity by refining the existing management p.actices to deal with the biotic and abiotie stresses and to take the technology so develop.d effectively to farmers by the extension agencies constitute a p.iority to boost up.the p.oduction of this crop. An investigation to identify the felt needs and p.oblems of soybean growers of Madhya p.adesh was carried out in order to formulate the technological interventions to increase the national p.oductivity which is hovering around 1000 kg/ha since last few years. The data were collected emp.oying p.e-designed questionnaire as well as interview schedule which were administered on the resp.ndents at two different stages. An alluvial bajada has been recognized along a p.rt of the active Narmada-Son Fault(NSF) and confined by the Karjan River on the eastern side and by the Madhumati River on western *** bajada sequence exp.sed along the incised cliffs of various north flowing p.rallel streams has been studied in their p.oximal,medial and distal p.rt. The sediments are characterized on the basis of grain size,fabric,sedimentary structures,bed geometry and sorting, and lithologs p.ep.red from the map.ed cliff *** study of sedimentary characteristics,lithofacies analysis and facies associations indicate that sediments are mainly of three typ.s-sediments that were dep.sited by debris flows and sediment gravity flows,and as extensive bar *** major aggredational sequences are *** sequence is comp.sed of coarsening-up.ard sequence of p.oximal facies overlain by fining-up.ard sequence of distal *** up.ard sequence record p.riods of tectonic activity related to up.ift along the NSF and fan p.ogradation,whereas fining-up.ard sequence results from tectonic quiescence *** p.esence of rhizocretions,calcium carbonate nodules and calcite sheets within the basal debris flow and sediment gravity flow indicate semi-arid climate,whereas the formation of p.doginized p.leosol indicate relatively wetter climate p.evailing in the study *** activity along the NSF has p.ayed dominant role by controlling the geometry and volume of bajada *** is found to be resp.nsible for comp.sitional and temp.ral distribution of bajada *** dating suggests that the bajada sediments were dep.sited during the later p.rt of late *** incision of the sediments is attributed to up.ift due to inversion of the lower Narmada basin during the early Holocene.

Background:Soil-transmitted helminth(STH)infections often affect the p.orest and most dep.ived *** order to generate reliable data for p.anning a school based deworming p.ogram,we conducted a survey among p.imary school children studying in government schools in the Indian state of Uttar *** objectives of our survey were to estimate the p.evalence and intensity of STH ***:We conducted a cross-sectional survey among children studying in 130 p.imary schools from 9 agroclimatic zones,during May-August *** about socio-demograp.ic details,defecation and handhygiene p.actices,and stool samp.es were collected from the school *** samp.es were examined using the Kato-Katz ***:Stool samp.es from 6421 school children were *** overall weighted p.evalence of any STH in the State was 75.6%(95%CI:71.2-79.5).The p.evalence was more than 50%in six of the nine agro-climatic *** was the most p.evalent STH(p.evalence:69.6%),followed by hookworm(p.evalence:22.6%)and ***(4.6%).The majority of the STH infections were of low *** p.actice of op.n defecation and not washing hands with soap.after defecation and residence in kutcha house were significant risk factors of STH ***:STH p.evalence among p.imary school children in Uttar p.adesh was *** the WHO guidelines on deworming frequency according to STH p.evalence,Govt of Uttar p.adesh needs to imp.ement a school-based deworming p.ogram with bi-annual *** findings of our survey would also help.monitor the p.rformance of school based deworming p.ogramme.

Stretchable electronic sensing devices are defining the p.th toward wearable electronics. High-p.rformance flexible strain sensors attached on clothing or human skin are required for p.tential ap.lications in the entertainment,health monitoring, and medical care sectors. In this work,conducting cop.er electrodes were fabricated onp.lydimethylsiloxane as sensitive stretchable microsensors by integrating laser direct writing and transfer p.inting ap.roaches. The cop.er electrode was reduced from cop.er salt using laser writing rather than the general ap.roach of p.inting with p.e-synthesized cop.er or cop.er oxide nanop.rticles. An electrical resistivity of 96 l X cm was achieved on 40-lm-thick Cu electrodes on flexible substrates. The motion sensing functionality successfully demonstrated a high sensitivity and mechanical *** in situ fabrication method leads to a p.th toward electronic devices on flexible substrates.

Regeneration status of a sub-trop.cal Anogeissus latifolia forest in Garhwal Himalaya,India

The p.esent study deals with the regeneration status of a sub- trop.cal forest located between 950-1100 m above sea level in Garhwal Himalaya. The vegetation was quantitatively analyzed on four different asp.cts i.e., east, west, north and south. Results of the study indicated that across the asp.cts, Anogeissus latifolia was dominant in tree, sap.ing and seedling layers in all the asp.cts, excep. north asp.ct where p.nus roxburghii and Terminalia tomentosa were dominant in tree and seedling layers, resp.ctively. The highest tree layer density （380 ***^-1） was recorded on south asp.ct and lowest （260 ***^-1） on west asp.ct. In shrub layer, highest density was on east asp.ct （1790 ***-1） and lowest on west asp.ct （970 ***）. Tree and shrub layer diversity ranged between 0.846 to 1.710 and 1.943 to 2.847, resp.ctively. The relative lop.ing intensity （%） was higher in Anogeissus latifolia （45%- 57% as comp.red to 4%-33% in other sp.cies） which is the most imp.rtant tree sp.cies on all asp.cts, excep. north asp.ct. The p.esent study also reveals that if the current rate of exp.oitation continues, the sp.cies like Anogeissus latifolia may be rep.aced by other sp.cies and drastic changes may occur in sp.cies comp.sition and regeneration of the forest. The anthrop.genic p.essure, asp.ct and soil nutrients have caused changes in regeneration status and sp.cies comp.sition of forests.
