Numerous leaf compressions of Glyptostrobus europaeus (Brongn.) Ung. (Taxodiaceae) are found in Aquitanian (Lower Miocene) lignified clay localities Bolattam and Akzhar in the Southern Turgay, on the right bank of the Dulygaly-Zhilanshik river (Central Kazakhstan). The finely preserved lignified compression remains of leafy shoots make micro-morphological investigation feasible. Comparative studies of the epidermal features both living G. pensilis C. Koch and a new finding of G. europaeus from Early Miocene of Kazakhstan and illustrate their certain difference. The cuticular organization and epidermal features of fossil leaves, which have been compared with these of 'the nearest living relative', G. pensilis, were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). The fossil leaves of G. europaeus from Kazakhstan are distinguished by stronger, than in living species, G. pensilis, developed 'micro-papillae' ('Kristallucken'), visible in SEM as ring-like structures left on the outer surface of cuticle in both nonstomatal and stomatal zones.

Robust reduction of graphene fluoride using an electrostatically biased scanning probe

We report a novel and easily accessible method to chemically reduce graphene fluoride （GF） sheets with nanoscopic precision using high electrostatic fields generated between an atomic force microscope （AFM） tip and the GF substrate. Reduction of fluorine by the electric field produces graphene nanoribbons （GNR） with a width of 105-1,800 nm with sheet resistivity drastically decreased from 〉1 TΩ.sq.^-1 （GF） down to 46 kΩ.sq.^-1 （GNR）. Fluorine reduction also changes the topography, friction, and work function of the GF. Kelvin probe force microscopy measurements indicate that the work function of GF is 180-280 mev greater than that of graphene. The reduction process was optimized by varying the AFM probe velocity between 1.2 μm.s^-1 and 12 μm.s^-1 and the bias voltage applied to the sample between -8 and -12 v. The electrostatic field required to remove fluorine from carbon is -1.6 ***-1. Reduction of the fluorine may be due to the softening of the C-F bond in this intense field or to the accumulation and hydrolysis of adventitious water into a meniscus.

The central region of the Neoarchaean Belomorian Mobile Belt (BMB) is, except for the Solovetsky Archipelago, largely covered by the White Sea. A newly discovered granitic gneiss outcrop on Solovetsky Island, Russia, enables a first age determination of the archipelago and evaluation of the hitherto poorly constrained central BMB. Zircons separated from the orthogneiss were analysed with SIMS-SHRIMP and LA-ICP-MS techniques. Both techniques yield a concordant U-Pb age of ca. 2.430 Ga, coinciding with ages of granitic intrusions in the BMB ca. 50 km west of the Solovetsky Islands.

For the past thirty years, intense efforts have been made to record atomic scale movies that reveal the movement of atoms in molecules, the fast dynamical processes in biological tissues and cells, and the changes in the structure of a solid confined to nano-scale volumes. A combination of sub-nanometer spatial resolution with picosecond or even femtosecond temporal resolution is required for such atomic movies. Additional important information can be obtained when the energy of the electron beam transmitted through the sample is measured. The four dimensional (4D) spatially and temporally resolved ultrafast electron microscopy method is made possible by the extremely high detection efficiency that is reached in 4D electron microscopy. Using ultra-short electron bunches for the visualization of biological tissue can also improve the spatial resolution compared to conventional electron microscopes, thereby enabling the study of complex biological samples of relevance to the life sciences. Of particular interest to a broad audience is the possibility to create a video, and in the future, a real atomic movie, using 4D electron tomography.

Analysis of monogenic forms and candidate genes of Parkinson’s disease (PD) does not allow to describe completely the contribution of genetic factors to the etiopathogenesis of the disorder. An approach associated with an analysis of changes in a transcriptome pattern during the development of the disease in model objects can be used to identify new candidate genes that are involved in the pathogenesis of PD. In this work, we performed a transcriptome analysis of a PD model, created via stereotaxic unilateral introduction of the 6-hydroxidopamine (6-OHDA) into the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) of a rat brain, to identify new candidate genes for PD. We studied transcriptome alterations in the substantia nigra of the rat brains 2 weeks after toxin administration, when the rats developed the Parkinson-like phenotype, and 4 weeks after toxin administration, when maximal changes in the behavior of animals were observed. The transcriptome analysis of the substantia nigra of the rat brains at the first time point (2 weeks) revealed changes in expression of genes that were clustered with high significance (p value) into three metabolic pathways according to protein participation: modification of the extracellular matrix, signal transduction (including genes encoding signal peptides), and inflammation processes. This likely indicates that, during this time nonspecific effects associated with the response to surgery took place in the substantia nigra of the rats. Concomitantly, the situation changed dramatically and a response associated with damage to the nervous tissue was observed 4 weeks after neurotoxin administration. As a result, we identified five metabolic pathways containing predominantly genes, that encode protein products that are involved in the processes of neuron projection, normal functioning of the soma and dendrites of neurons, synaptic transmission, and transmission of nerve impulses (p < 0.01, modified Fisher extra

The results of observation of different structuring techniques of thin metal layers applied in micro system technologies are presented. The Ti v getter films formed by magnetron sputtering have been explored using scanning electron and atomic-force microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, thermogravimetric analysis and fractal geometry. The film sorption capacity for hydrogen given by thermogravimetry was of 7.7 m3·Pa·g-1. To estimate the effective surface area, the fractal geometry tools were used and the calculated value of the specific surface area was about 155 m2/m3. The second object under investigation was a structure composed of micro- and mesoporous silicon and copper layer deposited electrochemically on the pore walls. Porous silicon when coupled with a reactive metal or alloy is expected to be an effective getter for micro system techniques. The use of porous silicon and specific conditions of depositions allows to form the structure of complex fractal type with a specific surface area of 167 m2/cm3.
