Frailty is a multidimensional dynamic condition characterized by decreased physiological reserves. In this issue,Wu et al.(2019)describe the largest whole-genome resequencing dataset published to date for rapeseed (Brassica napus),an allopolyploid crop species that originated just a few thousand years ago under anthropogenic influence and rapidly evolved into one of the world's most important oilseed crops. In almost 1000 *** spanning species-wid.e germplasm for oilseed rape,a comprehensive analysis of sequence diversity related to flowering-related traits uncovered selective sweeps associated with eco-geographic adaptation and human selection,attributable particularly to divergence among homoeologs of key flowering-time regulation and ethylene synthesis/signaling genes.

The differential diagnosis for irritability in children is *** patients with congenital heart disease,one must strongly consider cardiac etiologies such as low cardiac output or elevated central venous pressure(CVP).In patients with single-ventricle physiology,the second stage of palliation includes bidirectional Glenn,which involves anastomosis of the superior vena cava to the pulmonary artery resulting in volume offloading of the single systemic ***,early in the post-operative period,patients may experience a headache due to the acute increase in CVP,and symptoms improve over *** intracranial hypertension(IIH),also known as pseudotumor cerebri,is a rare neurologic disorder in children,characterized by raised intracranial pressure(ICP)in the absence of brain parenchymal lesions or cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)*** the pathogenesis of IIH is unknown,early recognition and treatment of IIH are important to prevent permanent vision *** are only rare reports of IIH in patients with Fontan *** our knowledge,we report the first case of IIH in a 2-year-old female after bidirectional Glenn.

On 7 January 2022,a 57-year-old man with terminal heart disease became the first living human to receive a genetically modified pig organ—a heart—transplanted into his chest during a 8 h surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore,MD,USA(Fig.1)[1].The pig heart,provided by the biotechnology company Revivicor(Blacksburg,VA,USA),had ten gene modifications intended to boost the chances of a successful pig-to-human transplant.

Both matrix biochemistry and neurotrophic factors are known to modulate neurite outgrowth and pathifnding; however, the interplay between these two factors is less studied. While previous work has shown that the biochemical identity of the matrix can alter the outgrowth of neurites in response to neurotrophins, the importance of the concentration of cell-adhesive ligands is unknown. Using engineered elastin-like protein matrices, we recently demonstrated a synergistic effect between matrix-bound cell-adhesive ligand density and soluble nerve growth factor treat-ment on neurite outgrowth from dorsal root ganglia. This synergism was mediated by Schwann cell-neurite contact through L1CAM. Cell-adhesive ligand density was also shown to alter the pathifnding behavior of dorsal root ganglion neurites in response to a gradient of nerve growth factor. While more cell-adhesive matrices promoted neurite outgrowth, less cell-adhesive ma-trices promoted more faithful neurite pathifnding. These studies emphasize the importance of considering both matrix biochemistry and neurotrophic factors when designing biomaterials for peripheral nerve regeneration.

For the first time, functioning of the planetary climate system is considered in terms of the self-organization laws with account of positive and negative feedbacks. It is shown that the maximum risks in the development of positive feedbacks that can lead the climate system to a planetary catastrophe, are associated with an unprecedented increase in the concentration of methane in the atmosphere. Over the last 30 years, its concentration in the atmosphere has increased by 2.5 times and continues to grow exponentially. In this review, we show that today the principal source for increase of methane concentration in the atmosphere is the self-accelerating decomposition of methane hydrates in the cryosphere of the Northern Hemisphere. In the history of the Earth, the emissions of methane into the atmosphere due to mass decomposition of methane hydrates led to climate-induced biosphere catastrophes. Paleo-reconstruction analysis of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere and its temperature over the last 420,000 years has allowed us to conclude that the self-organizing planetary climate system is currently in a state of dynamic chaos (close to the bifurcation point). This means that even a relatively weak impact on it, also of anthropogenic characters, is able to affect the planetary climate system to select its future development trajectory.
