Prevalence of type 2 diab.tes in Algerian patients with hepatitis C virus infection

AIM:To investigate the prevalence of,and risk factors for,diab.tes mellitus(DM) in Algerian patients with chronic hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection and in a control ***:A cross-sectional study was undertaken.A total of 416 consecutive patients with viral chronic hepatitis attending the Internal Medicine Department of the University Hospital Center Touhami b.nflis in b.tna [290 HCV-infected and 126 hepatitis b.virus(Hb.)-infected patients] were prospectively ***:The prevalence of DM was higher in HCV-infected patients in comparison with Hb.-infected patients(39.1% vs 5%,P b.tes was more prevalent in HCV-infected patients than in Hb.-infected patients(33.5% vs 4.3%,P b.tes was more prevalent in HCV-infected patients,b.t the difference was not significant(67.4% vs 20%,P = 0.058).The logistic regression analysis showed that HCV infection [odds ratio(OR) 4.73,95% CI:1.7-13.2],metab.lic syndrome(OR 12.35,95% CI:6.18-24.67),family history of diab.tes(OR 3.2,95% CI:1.67-6.13) and increased hepatic enzymes(OR 2.22,95% CI:1.1-4.5) were independently related to DM in these ***:The high prevalence of diab.tes in HCV-infected patients,and its occurrence at early stages of hepatic disease,suggest that screening for glucose ab.ormalities should b. indicated in these patients.

Sero-Prevalence of Hb., HCV and HEV among the Egyptian Pregnant Females

b.ckground: Viral hepatitis in pregnant women can b. caused b. multiple types of hepatitis viruses and can cause a wide range of symptoms and complications, ranging from asymptomatic infection to maternal and fetal deaths. Ob.ective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the sero-prevalence and the associated factors of viral hepatitis b.(Hb.), viral hepatitis C (HCV) and viral hepatitis E (HEV) among the Egyptian pregnant females. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the period from January to July 2017 in two selected antenatal clinics;El-shat b. maternity university hospital at Alexandria city and El-b.hera health insurance antenatal clinic at Damanhur city on 261 apparently healthy gravid women. Eligib.e women were evaluated b. a questionnaire ab.ut socio-demographic data and viral serological tests were done at El-shat b. maternity University Hospital Lab.ratory. Results: The overall Hb.-Ag sero-prevalence in the pregnant women included in this study was 7 cases (2.7%) and HCV-RNA PCR was 4 cases (1.5%). Of the total study participants, none of them (0%) were anti-HEV IgM positive and 48 cases (18.4%) were anti-HEV IgG positive. According to our results, neither age of the woman, place of residence, past family history of hepatitis virus infection nor having a pet animal had any strong association to b. considered as an associated factor for acquiring HEV infection. Conclusion: Although it seems that there are many improvements in the prevalence of different hepatitis viruses in the country, hepatitis viral infections are still high enough to continue their preventive programs and health education, to protect the mothers and their fetuses from the hazardous effects of these serious infections.

Evaluation of D-Dimer as a Diagnostic Tool in Patients with Acute Aortic Dissection

Acute (Ac.) Aortic Dissection (AD) is a life threatening cardiovascular emergency. The diagnostic methods (e.g., TEE, MRI, Multislice CT) are limited b. availab.lity. A fast, cost effective and technically simple method for diagnosis of AAD is needed. D-Dimer is a measure of clot formation and lysis. The aim of this study was to determine whether assessing D-Dimer level can b. used for the diagnosis of AAD. b.Methods:b. 45 patients with clinical suspicion of AAD who presented within the first 24 hours from symptom onset were studied prospectively. 20 patients were proved to have AAD by TEE (group I). The other 25 patients had other final diagnosis (group II). All the 20 patients in group I (100%) with confirmed AAD had positive and elevated D-Dimer levels while only 9 patients in group II (36%) had positive D-Dimer levels (p b.Conclusion:b. D-Dimer levels are positive and elevated in all the patients with AAD presenting within the first 24 hours from symptom onset.

Cardioprotective activity of alcoholic extract of Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers in calcium chloride-induced cardiac arrhythmia in rats

The present study investigated the antiarrhythmic activity of alcoholic extract of Tinospora cordifolia （T. cordifolia） in CaCl2 induced arrhythmia. CaCl2 （25 mg/kg） was administered b. intravenous infusion （iv） to produce arrhythmia in rats. The animals were then treated with T. cordifolia extract （150, 250, and 450 mg/kg） and verapamil （5 mg/kg,iv）. Lead II electrocardiogram was monitored. Plasma calcium, sodium and potassium levels were measured. In CaCl2 induced arrhythmia, heart rate was decreased b. 41.10%, T. cordifolia at 150, 300, and 450 mg/kg decreased the heart rate b. 26.30%, 29.16%, and 38.29%, respectively, and verapamil reduced the heart rate b. 9.70% compared to the normal group. The PQRST waves were normalized and atrial and ventricular fib.illation was controlled in rats treated with verapamil and T. cordifolia. CaCl2 increased calcium and sodium levels and decreased potassium levels in b.ood. T. cordifolia dose-dependently decreased calcium and sodium levels and increased potassium levels. Hence, T. cordifolia can b. used in antiarrhythmic clinical settings and b.neficial in atrial and ventricular fib.illation and flutter and may b. indicated in ventricular tachyarrhythmia.

Investigation of the Effect of Film Thickness and Heat Treatment on the Optical Properties of TeSeSn Thin Films

Glassy sub.trates TeSeSn thin films were thermally evaporated onto chemically cleaned glass. The as-deposited (as-prepared) and annealed thin films were characterized b. scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical transmission. The optical ab.orption of the as-prepared and annealed TeSeSn thin films is studied in the wavelength range of 300 nm - 900 nm. The direct optical energy gap (Eg) increases from 1.989 to 2.143 eV with increasing the thickness of the as-prepared films from 100 to 200 nm. The annealed TeSeSn films showed a decrease in the optical energy gap with increasing the annealing temperature. The effect of heat treatment on the lattice dielectric constant (εL) and carrier concentration (N) are also studied.
