The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses.p.rformed at the Large Hadron Collider,as standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on s.p.ressing a large gluon-induced background.This.p.per describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAs Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAs experiment.Two taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet pseudorapidity.Differences in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.

Elevation transition of aquatic insects closely matches a thermal feature in the Yungas of Northwestern Argentina

Temperature is a key factor that shapes the distribution of organisms.Having knowledge about how species respond to temperature is relevant to devise strategies for addressing the impacts of climate change.Aquatic insects are particularly vulnerable to climate change,yet there is still much to learn about their ecology and distribution.In the Yungas ecoregion of Northwestern Argentina,cold-and warm-adapted species of the orders Ephemeroptera,plecoptera,and Trichoptera(EpT)are segregated by elevation.We modeled the ecological niche of south American EpT species in this region using available data and projected their potential distribution in geographic space.species were grouped based on their ecogeographic similarity,and we analyzed their replacement pattern along elevation gradients,focusing on the ecotone where opposing thermal preferences converge.Along this interface,we identified critical points where the combined incidence of cold and warm assemblages maximizes,indicating a significant transition zone.We found that the Montane Cloud Forest holds the interface,with a particularly greater suitability at its lower boundary.The main axis of the interface runs in a N-s direction and falls between 14°C-16°C mean annual isotherms.The probability of a particular location within a basin being classified as.p.rt of the interface increases as Kira’s warmth index approaches a score around 150.Understanding the interface is critical for defining the thermal limits of species distribution and designing biomonitoring programs.Changes in the location of thermal constants related to mountainous ecotones may cause vertical displacement of aquatic insects and vegetation communities.We have recognized significant temperature thresholds that serve as indicators of suitability for the interface.As global warming is anticipated to shift these indicators,we suggest using them to monitor the imprints of climate change on mountain ecosystems.

Artemisia vulgaris Induces Tumor-selective Ferroptosis and Necroptosis via Lysosomal Ca^(2+) signaling

Objective To evaluate the chemical composition and effects of Artemisia vulgaris(AV)hydroalcoholic extract(HEAV)on breast cancer cells(MCF-7 and sKBR-3),chronic myeloid leukemia(K562)and NIH/3T3 fibroblasts.Methods.p.ytochemical analysis of HEAV was done by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass(HpLC)spectrometry.Viability and cell death studies were performed using trypan blue and Annexin/FITC-7AAD,respectively.Ferrostatin-1(Fer-1)and necrostatin-1(Nec-1)were used to assess the mode of HEAV-induced cell death and acetoxymethylester(BApTA-AM)was used to verify the involvement of cytosolic calcium in this event.Cytosolic calcium measurements were made using Fura-2-AM.Results HEAV decreased the viability of MCF-7,sKBR-3 and K562 cells.p.0.05).The viability of HEAV-treated K562 cells was reduced compared to HEAV-exposed fibroblasts.p.0.05).Treatment of K562 cells with HEAV induced cell death primarily by late apoptosis and necrosis in assays using annexin V-FITC/7-AAD(pse of Nec-1 and Fer-1 increased the viability of K562 cells treated with HEAV relative to cells exposed to HEAV alone(pse mainly from lysosomes in K562 cells.p.0.01).Furthermore,BApTA-AM,an intracellular Ca^(2+)chelator,decreased the number of non-viable cells treated with HEAV(psions HEAV is cytotoxic and activates several modalities of cell death,which are partially dependent on lysosomal release of Ca^(2+).These effects may be related to artemisinin and caffeoylquinic acids,the main compounds identified in HEAV.

Melt extrusion-based additive manufacturing(ME-AM)is a promising technique to fabricate porous scaffolds for tissue engi-neering applications.However,most synthetic semicrystalline polymers do not possess the intrinsic biological activity required to control cell fate.Grafting of biomolecules on polymeric surfaces of AM scaffolds enhances the bioactivity of a construct;however,there are limited strategies available to control the surface density.Here,we report a strategy to tune the surface density of bioactive groups by blending a low molecular weight poly(ε-caprolactone)5k(pCL5k)containing orthogonally reactive azide groups with an unfunctionalized high molecular weight pCL75k at different ratios.stable porous three-dimensional(3D)scaf-folds were then fabricated using a high weight percentage(75 wt.%)of the low molecular weight pCL 5k.As a proof-of-concept test,we prepared films of three different mass ratios of low and high molecular weight polymers with a thermopress and reacted with an alkynated fluorescent model compound on the surface,yielding a density of 201-561 pmol/cm^(2).subsequently,a bone morphogenetic protein 2(BMp-2)-derived peptide was grafted onto the films comprising different blend compositions,and the effect of peptide surface density on the osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stromal cells(hMsCs)was assessed.After two weeks of culturing in a basic medium,cells expressed higher levels of BMp receptor II(BMpRII)on films with the conjugated peptide.In addition,we found that alkaline phosphatase activity was only significantly enhanced on films contain-ing the highest peptide density(i.e.,561 pmol/cm^(2)),indicating the importance of the surface density.Taken together,these results emphasize that the density of surface peptides on cell differentiation must be considered at the cell-material interface.Moreover,we have presented a viable strategy for ME-AM community that desires to tune the bulk and surface functionality via blending of(modified)polymers.Furthermore,the use of alkyne-a

Cardiovascular risk burden and disability:findings from the International Mobility in Aging study(IMIAs)

BACKGROUND The association of cardiovascular risk burden with disability is unclear.We examined the association between trajectories of the Framingham general cardiovascular disease risk score(FGCRs)with the trajectories of limitations of physical function in older adults.METHODs A total of 1219 participants with no disabilities from the International Mobility in Aging study(IMIAs)study who had up to three repeated measures of FGCRs between 2012–2016 and without a history of stroke or coronary heart disease at baseline and follow-up were included.FGCRs at baseline was assessed and categorized into tertiles.p.ysical function was evaluated with the short physical performance Battery(s.p.).The data were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models.REsULTs At baseline,FGCRs ranged between 3–94(mean score:24±15.8),participants were 32(2.6%),502(41.2%)and 685(56.2%)in lowest,middle,and highest tertiles,respectively.In the trajectories of limitations of physical function,the lowest FGCRs had no differences,while the middle and highest had a decrease in physical performance between 2012–2014(p=0.0001).Age,being female,living in Andes Mountains,having middle and highest FGCRs,higher alcohol consumption,being obese,lack of exercise and cognitive impairment increase the probability of disability(pped regions and having a higher educational level reduced the probability of disability during the follow-up time(psIONs Higher cardiovascular risk burden is associated with decreased physical performance,especially in gait.Results suggest s.p. may provide a measure of cardiovascular health in older adults.

The use of Vis-NIR-sWIR spectroscopy in the prediction of soil available ions after application of rock powder

some of the problems attributed to traditional laboratory analyses that limit the correct assessment of the nutrient contents in the soil are time requirements and high cost of the soil nutrient determinations.To solve these problems,a study was carried out to evaluate the use of visible,near-infrared,and short-wave infrared(Vis-NIR-sWIR)spectroscopy in the prediction of soil available ions submitted to the application of rock powders.The study was carried out on an Arenosol in paranavaíCity/Brazil.Treatments(rock powders)were arranged within a split-plot system designed in randomized blocks with four repetitions.sugarcane was cultivated for 14 months after the application of rock powders.Later,96 soil samples were collected for measuring the pH and available ions.p.K^(+),Ca^(2+),Mg^(2+),s-sO_(4)^(2-),si,Cu^(2+),Fe^(2+),Mn^(2+),and Zn^(2+)as well as spectral reading through a Vis-NIR-sWIR spectroradiometer to predict the soil chemical attributes through the partial least square regression(pLs)technique.The results showed that the elements K^(+),Ca^(2+),Mg^(2+),Cu^(2+),and Fe^(2+)could be predicted with a reasonable rightness degree(R^(2)_(p)>0.50,RpDp>1.40)from spectral models.However,for the attributes.p.,p,s-sO_(4)^(2-),si,Mn^(2+),and Zn^(2+),there were no satisfactory models(R^(2)_(p)pDps,the application of rock powder changed the spectral curves and,because of that,allows the building of pLs models to predict the elements K^(+),Ca^(2+),Mg^(2+),Cu^(2+),and Fe^(2+).Therefore,Vis-NIR-sWIR spectroscopy is a promising alternative to the routine analyses of soil fertility since it has advantages such as fast analytical speed,low cost,easy to operate,non-destructive,and environmentally friendly,because it does not use harmful chemicals.

All-solid-state batteries(AssBs)are a class of safer and higher-energy-density materials compared to conventional devices,from which solid-state electrolytes(ssEs)are their essential components.To date,investigations to search for high ion-conducting solid-state electrolytes have attracted broad concern.However,obtaining ssEs with high ionic conductivity is challenging due to the complex structural information and the less-explored structure-performance relationship.To provide a solution to these challenges,developing a database containing typical ssEs from available experimental reports would be a new avenue to understand the structureperformance relationships and find out new design guidelines for reasonable ssEs.Herein,a dynamic experimental database containing>600 materials was developed in a wide range of temperatures(132.40–1261.60 K),including mono-and divalent cations(e.g.,Li^(+),Na^(+),K^(+),Ag^(+),Ca^(2+),Mg^(2+),and Zn^(2+))and various types of anions(e.g.,halide,hydride,sulfide,and oxide).Data-mining was conducted to explore the relationships among different variates(e.g.,transport ion,composition,activation energy,and conductivity).Overall,we expect that this database can provide essential guidelines for the design and development of high-performance ssEs in AssB applications.This database is dynamically updated,which can be accessed via our open-source online system.

Background:Exercise training promotes brain plasticity and is associated with protection against cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease(AD).These beneficial effects may be partly mediated by blood-borne factors.Here we used an in vitro model of AD to investigate effects of blood plasma from exercise-trained donors on neuronal viability,and an in vivo rat model of AD to test whether such plasma impacts cognitive function,amyloid pathology,and neurogenesis.Methods:Mouse hippocampal neuronal cells were exposed to AD-like stress using amyloid-βand treated with plasma collected from human male donors 3 h after a single bout of high-intensity exercise.For in vivo studies,blood was collected from exercise-trained young male Wistar rats(high-intensity intervals 5 days/week for 6 weeks).Transgenic AD rats(McGill-R-Thyl-App)were inj ected 5 times/fortnight for 6 weeks at2 months or 5 months of age with either(a)plasma from the exercise-trained rats,(b)plasma from sedentary rats,or(c)saline.Cognitive function,amyloid plaque pathology,and neurogenesis were assessed.The plasma used for the treatment was analyzed for 23 cytokines.Results.p.asma from exercised donors enhanced cell viability by 44.1%(p=0.032)and reduced atrophy by 50.0%(ps.In vivo exercised plasma treatment did not alter cognitive function or amyloid plaque pathology but did increase hippocampal neurogenesis by~3 fold,regardless of pathological stage,when compared to saline-treated rats.Concentrations of 7 cytokines were significantly reduced in exercised plasma compared to sedentary plasma.Conclusion:Our proof-of-concept study demonstrates that plasma from exercise-trained donors can protect neuronal cells in culture and promote adult hippocampal neurogenesis in the AD rat brain.This effect may be partly due to reduced pro-inflammatory signaling molecules in exercised plasma.

Background:Hemodialysis(HD) per se is a risk factor for thrombosis.Considering the growing body of evidence on blood-flow restriction(BFR) exercise in HD patients,identification of possible risk factors related to the prothrombotic agent D-dimer is required for the safety and feasibility of this training model.The aim of the present study was to identify risk factors associated with higher D-dimer levels and to determine the acute effect of resistance exercise(RE) with BFR on this molecule.Methods:Two hundred and six HD patients volunteered for this study(all with a glomerular filtration rate of session consisted of 50% arterial occlusion pressure during 50 min sessions of HD(intradialytic exercise).RE repetitions included concentric and eccentric lifting phases(each lasting 2 s) and were s.p.rvised by a strength and conditioning specialist.Results:several variables were associated with elevated levels of D-dimer,including higher blood glucose,citrate use,recent cardiovascular events,recent intercurrents,higher inflammatory status,catheter as vascular access,older patients(>70 years old),and HD vintage.Furthermore,RE+BFR significantly increases D-dimer after 4 h.patients with borderline baseline D-dimer levels(400-490 ng/mL) displayed increased risk of elevating D-dimer over the normal range(≥500 ng/mL).Conclusion:These results identified factors associated with a heightened prothrombotic state and may assist in the screening process for HD patients who wish to undergo RE+BFR.D-dimer and/or other fibrinolysis factors should be assessed at baseline and throughout the protocol as a precautionary measure to maximize safety during RE+BFR.

ENsO impacts on litter stocks and water holding capacity in secondary forests in eastern Amazonia

Among the impacts of climate change,there is the intensification of phenomena such as the El Niño south-ern Oscillation(ENsO)responsible for El Niño and La Niña.However,understanding their effects on the functional pro-cesses of forests is limited.Therefore,this study evaluated the effects of ENsO on litter stock and water holding capac-ity(WHC)in a successional forest in eastern Amazonia.Evaluations occurred in periods with the most rainfall in El Niño(2019)and least in La Niña(2021)years.Twelve permanent plots were used to sample litter.ENsO effects were evident for WHC,higher during El Niño.However,this influence was not clear for litter,as only in the rainy season effects were found.There was a positive correlation of WHC with precipitation and humidity,while litter stocks were negatively correlated with temperature and wind speed.Although the subject of this study requires long-term assessments.p.eliminary results suggests that,depending on the intensity of ENsO,forest functional processes can be strongly impacted and altered.The conclusion reinforces warnings by the scientific community about the impacts of climate change on the maintenance of litter stocks,decomposition and,consequently,the biogeochemical cycle and essential ecosystem services for the maintenance of Amazonia biodiversity.The need to develop long-term research to understand the effects of climatic change on litter stocks and water holding capacity is highlighted,especially in Amazonia.
