Immediate Effect of Electro-acupuncture on Endometrial Blood Flow in Patients with Recurrent Implantation Failure:A Randomized Controlled Trial

Objective To investigate the immediate effects of electro-acupuncture(EA)on endometrial blood flow among recurrent implantation failure(RIF)patients.Methods Eighty RIF patients,enrolled from March 2022 to December 2022,were randomly allocated into either the EA group(40 cases)or the waiting-list(WL)group(40 cases)by using a random number table.The EA group underwent acupuncture at points of Shenting(GV 24),Baihui(GV 4),Benshen(GB 13),bilateral Zigong(EX-CA 1),Huangshu(KI 16),Sanyinjiao(SP 6)and Xuehai(SP10),and electric acupuncture apparatus was connected to EX-CA 1,KI 16,SP 6,and SP 10 with disperse-dense waves at 4/20 Hz frequencies for 30 min after transvaginal ultrasound,while the WL group received no intervention.The primary outcome measured was the endometrial volume blood flow.The secondary outcomes included the bilateral uterine artery index,endometrial volume,endometrial blood flow type,vascular distribution index(VI^(MV))for endometrial and ovary,clinical pregnancy rate,and embryo implantation rate.Results In the EA group,there was a notable decrease in the bilateral pulsatility index and a significant improvement in the endometrial blood flow type post-EA(P0.05).Besides,no adverse events related to EA were observed.Conclusions EA can promptly ameliorate VI^(MV) for the endometrial and right ovary,and endometrial blood flow type.Future randomized controlled trials are warranted to investigate the long-term effects of EA on blood flow of RIF patients and its implications for pregnancy outcomes.(Trial registration No.ChiCTR2200057377).

Anisotropic etching mechanisms of 4H-SiC:Experimental and first-principles insights

Molten-alkali etching has been widely used to reveal dislocations in 4H silicon carbide(4H-SiC),which has promoted the identification and statistics of dislocation density in 4H-SiC single crystals.However,the etching mechanism of 4H-SiC is limited misunderstood.In this letter,we reveal the anisotropic etching mechanism of the Si face and C face of 4H-SiC by combining molten-KOH etching,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)and first-principles investigations.The activation energies for the molten-KOH etching of the C face and Si face of 4H-SiC are calculated to be 25.09 and 35.75 kcal/mol,respectively.The molten-KOH etching rate of the C face is higher than the Si face.Combining XPS analysis and first-principles calculations,we find that the molten-KOH etching of 4H-SiC is proceeded by the cycling of the oxidation of 4H-SiC by the dissolved oxygen and the removal of oxides by molten KOH.The faster etching rate of the C face is caused by the fact that the oxides on the C face are unstable,and easier to be removed with molten alkali,rather than the C face being easier to be oxidized.

Tough Semi-interpenetrating Polyvinylpyrrolidone/Polyacrylamide Hydrogels Enabled by Bioinspired Hydrogen-bonding Induced Phase Separation

Semi-interpenetrating(semi-IPN)hydrogels formed by the continuous interpenetration of cross-linked polymer network and linear non-crosslinked polymer with multifunctionality are widely used in biomedical and other fields.However,the negative impact of linear polymer on the homogeneity of the cross-linked network often leads to a decrease in the mechanical properties of semi-IPN hydrogels and severely limits their applications.Herein,a bioinspired hydrogen-bonding induced phase separation strategy is presented to construct the tough semi-IPN polyvinylpyrrolidone/polyacrylamide hydrogels(named PVP/PAM hydrogels),including the linear polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP)and cross-linked polyacrylamide(PAM)network.The resultant PVPx/PAM hydrogels exhibit unique phase separation induced by the hydrogen bonding between PVP and PAM and affected by the amount of substance of PVP.Meanwhile,the phase separation of PVPx/PAM hydrogels results in excellent mechanical properties with a strain of 2590%,tensile strength of 0.28 MPa and toughness of 2.17 MJ/m^(3).More importantly,the hydrogen bonding between PVP and PAM firstly disrupts to dissipate energy under external forces,so the PVPx/PAM hydrogels exhibit good self-recovery properties and outperform chemically cross-linked PAM hydrogels in impact resistance and damping applications.It is believed that the PVPx/PAM hydrogels with hydrogen-bonding induced phase separation possess more potential application prospects.

Association between body mass index and in vitro fertilization/intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection outcomes: An analysis of 15,124 normal ovarian responders in China

Background: High body mass index (BMI) results in decreased fecundity, and women with high BMI have reduced rates of clinical pregnancy and live birth inin vitro fertilization/intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI). Meanwhile, ovarian responses show great heterogeneity in patients with a high BMI. This study aimed to analyze the effects of a high BMI on IVF/ICSI outcomes in the Chinese female with normal ovarian response.Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study comprising 15,124 patients from the medical record system of the Reproductive Center of Peking University Third Hospital, with 3530 (23.3%) in the overweight group and 1380 (9.1%) in the obese group, who had a normal ovarian response (5-15 oocytes retrieved) and underwent fresh embryo transfer (ET) cycles from January 2017 to December 2018, followed by linked frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) cycles from January 2017 to December 2020. Cumulative live birth rate (CLBR) was used as the primary outcome. Furthermore, a generalized additive model was applied to visually illustrate the curvilinear relationship between BMI and the outcomes. We used a decision tree to identify the specific population where high BMI had the greatest effect on IVF/ICSI outcomes.Results: High BMI was associated with poor IVF/ICSI outcomes, both in cumulative cycles and in separate fresh ET or FET cycles. In cumulative cycles, compared with the normal weight group, obesity was correlated with a lower positive pregnancy test rate (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 0.809, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.682-0.960), lower clinical pregnancy rate (aOR: 0.766, 95% CI: 0.646-0.907), lower live birth rate (aOR: 0.706, 95% CI: 0.595-0.838), higher cesarean section rate (aOR: 2.066, 95% CI: 1.533-2.785), and higher rate of large for gestational age (aOR: 2.273, 95% CI: 1.547-3.341). In the generalized additive model, we found that CLBR declined with increasing BMI, with 24 kg/m2 as an inflection point. Runx2 regulates peripheral nerve regeneration to promote Schwann cell migration and re-myelination

Runx2 is a major regulator of osteoblast differentiation and function;however,the role of Runx2 in peripheral nerve repair is unclea r.Here,we analyzed Runx2expression following injury and found that it was specifically up-regulated in Schwann cells.Furthermore,using Schwann cell-specific Runx2 knocko ut mice,we studied peripheral nerve development and regeneration and found that multiple steps in the regeneration process following sciatic nerve injury were Runx2-dependent.Changes observed in Runx2 knoc kout mice include increased prolife ration of Schwann cells,impaired Schwann cell migration and axonal regrowth,reduced re-myelination of axo ns,and a block in macrophage clearance in the late stage of regeneration.Taken together,our findings indicate that Runx2 is a key regulator of Schwann cell plasticity,and therefore peripheral nerve repair.Thus,our study shows that Runx2 plays a major role in Schwann cell migration,re-myelination,and peripheral nerve functional recovery following injury.

Identification of high oxygen-consuming substances in stormwater drainage systems illicitly connected with sewage system

The dissolved oxygen content in water is an important indicator for assessing the quality of the water environment,and maintaining a certain amount of dissolved oxygen is essential for the healthy development of the ecological environment.When a water body is anoxic,the activity of anaerobic microorganisms increases and organic matter is decomposed to produce a large number of blackening and odorizing substances,resulting in black and odorous water bodies,which is a very common and typical phenomenon in China.Presently,there is still a relatively universal occurrence of illicitly connected stormwater and sewage pipes in the urban drainage pipe network in China,which makes oxygen-consuming substances be directly discharged into rivers through stormwater pipes and consume the dissolved oxygen in the water bodies,resulting in an oxygen deficiency of the water.This induces seasonal or year-round black and stink phenomena in urban rivers.Hence,identifying high oxygen-consuming substances,which lays the foundation for the subsequent removal of oxygen-consuming substances,is essential.Through a series of comparisons of water quality indicators and analysis of organic characteristics,it was found that the oxygen consumption capacity of domestic sewage was higher than that of industrial wastewater in the selected area of this study,and the oxygen-consuming substances of domestic sewage were small molecular amino acids.By comparing 20 conventional free amino acids,it was found that seven of them consumed oxygen easily,and compared with chemical oxygen consumption,biological oxygen consumption was in a leading position.

Numerical Simulation of Droplet Generation in Coaxial Microchannels

In this study,numerical simulations of the pinching-off phenomena displayed by the dispersed phase in a continuous phase have been conducted using COMSOL Multiphysics(level-set method).Four flow patterns,namely“drop flow”,“jet flow”,“squeeze flow”,and“co-flow”,have been obtained for different flow velocity ratios,channel diameter ratios,density ratios,viscosity ratios,and surface tension.The flow pattern map of two-phase flow in coaxial microchannels has been obtained accordingly,and the associated droplet generation process has been critically discussed considering the related frequency,diameter,and pinch-off length.In particular,it is shown that the larger the flow velocity ratio,the smaller the diameter of generated droplets and the shorter the pinch-off length.The pinch-off length of a droplet is influenced by the channel diameter ratio and density ratio.The changes in viscosity ratio have a negligible influence on the droplet generation pinching frequency.With an increase in surface tension,the frequency of generation and pinch-off length of droplets decrease,but for small surface tension the generation diameter of droplet increases.

Emerging clinical relevance of microbiome in cancer:promising biomarkers and therapeutic targets

The profound influence of microbiota in cancer initiation and progression has been under the spotlight for years,leading to numerous researches on cancer microbiome entering clinical evaluation.As promising biomarkers and therapeutic targets,the critical involvement of microbiota in cancer clinical practice has been increasingly appreciated.Here,recent progress in this field is reviewed.We describe the potential of tumor-associated microbiota as effective diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers,respectively.In addition,we highlight the relationship between microbiota and the therapeutic efficacy,toxicity,or side effects of commonly utilized treatments for cancer,including chemotherapy,radiotherapy,and immunotherapy.Given that microbial factors influence the cancer treatment outcome,we further summarize some dominating microbial interventions and discuss the hidden risks of these strategies.This review aims to provide an overview of the applications and advancements of microbes in cancer clinical relevance.

Residual levels and health risk assessment of trace metals in Chinese resident diet

Large-scale metal contamination across the food web is an intractable problem due to increasing pollutant emissions,atmospheric transport,and dry and wet deposition of elements.The present study focus on several trace metals that are rarely studied but have special toxicity,including tin(Sn),antimony(Sb),gold(Au),hafnium(Hf),palladium(Pd),platinum(Pt),ruthenium(Ru),tellurium(Te)and iridium(Ir).We investigated trace metals residues and distribution characteristics,and further evaluated the potential health risks from major daily food intakes in 33 cities in China.Sn,Sb,Ir,Hf,and Au were frequently detected in food samples with the concentrations ranged from ND(not detected)to 24.78μg/kg ww(wet weight).Eggs exhibited the highest residual level of all detected metals(13.70±14.70μg/kg ww in sum),while the lowest concentrations were observed in vegetables(0.53±0.17μg/kg ww in sum).Sn accounting for more than 50%of the total trace metals concentration in both terrestrial and aquatic animal origin foods.In terrestrial plant origin foods,Sn and Ir were the most abundant elements.Hf and Au were the most abundant elements in egg samples.In addition,Sb and Ir showed a clear trophic dilution effect in terrestrial environments,while in aquatic ecosystems,Sn,Hf,and Au exhibited obvious trophic amplification effects.The calculated average estimated daily intake(EDI)via food consumption in five regions of China was 0.09μg/(kg·day),implying the health risk of aforementioned elements was acceptable.

Cartilage development is controlled by the highly synergistic proliferation and differentiation of growth plate chondrocytes,in which the Indian hedgehog(IHH)and parathyroid hormone-related protein-parathyroid hormone-1 receptor(PTHrP-PTH1R)feedback loop is crucial.The inositol-requiring enzyme 1a/X-box-binding protein-1 spliced(IRE1α/XBP1s)branch of the unfolded protein response(UPR)is essential for normal cartilage development.However,the precise role of ER stress effector IRE1α,encoded by endoplasmic reticulum to nucleus signaling 1(ERN1),in skeletal development remains unknown.Herein,we reported that loss of IRE1α accelerates chondrocyte hypertrophy and promotes endochondral bone growth.ERN1 acts as a negative regulator of chondrocyte proliferation and differentiation in postnatal growth plates.Its deficiency interrupted PTHrP/PTH1R and IHH homeostasis leading to impaired chondrocyte hypertrophy and differentiation.XBP1s,produced by p-IRE1α-mediated splicing,binds and up-regulates PTH1R and IHH,which coordinate cartilage development.Meanwhile,ER stress cannot be activated normally in ERN1-deficient chondrocytes.In conclusion,ERN1 deficiency accelerates chondrocyte hypertrophy and cartilage mineralization by impairing the homeostasis of the IHH and PTHrP/PTH1R feedback loop and ER stress.ERN1 may have a potential role as a new target for cartilage growth and maturation.
