Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has brought negative effects to the environment produced by the materials that compose them. The proper implementation of management plans of WEEE should integrate measures to prevent, mitigate and correct these affectations. As an initial step, it is necessary to make a diagnosis of the current situation of WEEE management which is the objective of this work. The studied zone was composed by the municipalities of Tampico, Ciudad madero and Altamira located in southeast Tamaulipas, mexico. The descriptive analysis of technical and regulatory aspects of the current management system in the study area was developed, including generation rates and analysis of waste streams. Among the main results, the generation of WEEE was estimated in 2040.38 tons/year for 2013, distributed in the municipalities of Tampico with 830.93 tons/year, Altamira with 650.18 tons/year, and Ciudad madero with 559.27 tons/year. This calculation was estimated using mexico’s WEEE generation indicators. The analysis of waste streams includes five categories of WEEE, Televisions with 61% of the total generation, followed by sound devices with 18%, personal computers with 17%;mobile phones with 2% as well as fixed phones with 1%. In the study area, reports of Tampico’s municipality indicated that 96 tons of WEEE was collected in the city of Tampico in 2013. In méxico, the national legislation considers WEEE in the category of waste requiring special handling (WRSH), however, it exists an inadequacy in the environmental laws about the specific classification of this kind of debris that makes their effective management more difficult. No companies who provide a management or treatment operations for WEEE are reported in Tampico, or in the near region. In addition, despite an initial interest for the municipality to attend the WEEE problematic, it exists a lack of sensibility of the population in the absence of environmental education programs.

Introduction: Recent studies showed relation between mortality and bleeding in acute coronary syndromes. Objective: The objective is to analyze the prognosis of patients with acute coronary syndromes with or without in-hospital major and/or minor bleedings. methods: This was a pro-spective data bank analysis study with 546 patients (39 with bleeding (group I) and 507 without bleeding (group II)) with acute coronary syndromes included between may 2010 and may 2013. Besides, mehran bleeding risk score was calculated to all patients. The primary endpoint was all causes of in-hospital death and combined events. Comparison between groups was made by Anova and Q-square. multivariate analysis was determined by logistic regression and was considered significant when p p = 0.005) and combined events (35.9% vs 11.4%, p me results were observed in multivariate and long-term analysis. Con-clusions: Almost half of patients with acute coronary syndromes had higher risk of bleeding, and that with major or minor bleedings had greater deaths and combined events.

Adolescent obesity is a health problem worldwide. Drug therapy for obesity in children is only acceptable if done within the framework of a comprehensive weight loss, prevention of comorbidities, including health education, changes in lifestyles, diet and exercise. These pharmacological treatments indicate that mainly young patients did not respond to standard measures and developing complications. The role of bariatric surgery, with or without the use of drugs is subject to further research to elucidate its role among the various treatment options for these patients. Currently being studied a wide range of drugs to those included gastrointestinal hormones. Scientific information regarding the use of exenatide in obese patients without diabetes is still limited. The use of exenatide in adolescents with morbid obesity may represent a therapeutic complement invaluable, effective and free of complications, and prevents future bariatric surgery.

Application of a Sulfur Removal Hydrometallurgical Process in a Lead-Acid Battery Recycling Plant in Costa Rica

This study presents the implementation of a desulphurization process for lead recycling under different chemical and physical conditions using pyro-metallurgical processes. Desulphurization was done using a hydrometallurgical process using sodium carbonate as a desulphurization agent and different lead-bearing loads compositions. Waste characterization included: SO2 concentrations in the stack emissions, total lead content in the furnace ash, the total lead content in the slag, and the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP). A significant reduction in SO2 emissions was achieved (~55% reduction) where mean SO2 concentrations changed from 2193 ± 135 ppm to 1006 ± 62 ppm after the implementation of the modified processes. The desulfurized lead paste (i.e. the metallic fraction lead of the battery) of the modified process exhibited an improvement in the concentration of the lead in the TCLP test, with an average value of 1.5 ppm which is below US EPA limit of 5 ppm. The traditional process TCLP mean value for the TCLP was 54.2 ppm. The total lead content in the bag house ashes shows not significant variations, when comparing the desulphurization (67.6% m/m) and non-desulphurization process (64.9% m/m). The total lead mean content in the slag was higher in the desulphurization process (2.49% m/m) than the traditional process (1.91% m/m). Overall, the implementation of a new desulphurization method would potentially increase the operation costs in 10.3%. At the light of these results, a combination of hydrometallurgical and pyro-metallurgical processes in the recycling of lead-acid batteries can be used to reduce the environmental impact of these industries but would increase the operational costs of small lead recyclers.

This article reports the evaluation of antioxidant and antifungal activity from synthetic naphthoquinones derived from lawsone. The antifungal activity was carried out through the inhibition of exoenzymes produced by Candida albicans. The inhibition of phospholipase and the proteinase production by Candida was similar in all derivatives tested;however, the difference between the enzyme production of the control and test does not show statistical difference in any of the studied strains. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity using DPPH radical-scavenging assay showed an important activity for all naphtoquinone derivatives.

Context: Bronchial fibroepithelial polyp is a very rare benign endobronchial tumor. Typically, it is a slow growing lesion, and the differential diagnosis includes other benign and malignant endobronchial tumors. Case Report: We report a case of a 75-year-old female who complained of intermittent productive cough. Computed tomography of the thorax showed a solid nodule with lobulated contours in the right main bronchus and subtotal atelectasis of the right lower lobe. Bronchoscopy with biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of a bronchial fibroepithelial polyp. Conclusion: This case is illustrative and demonstrates the importance of imaging methods and of histopathological correlation for the accurate diagnosis of this benign treatable lesion.

Atherogenic Indices and HDL Particle Size as Laboratory Parameters to Evaluate Cardiovascular Risk in the Presence of Dyslipidemia

Current anti-epileptic drugs mostly control convulsions with a limited efficacy, and do not seize epileptogenesis. One of the structural-functional modifications occurring during epileptogenesis is an abnormal axonal sprouting. The hippocampal mossy fiber(mF) sprouting found in patients and in animal models of temporal lobe epilepsy(TLE)(Neuroscience14, 375-403) generates an aberrant excitatory feedback circuit in granule cells that is thought to contribute to the hyperexcitability underlying the seizure-prone state(Neurochem. Res.28, 1649-58). However, the mechanism underlying this aberrant re-wiring is still poorly understood. There is now a growing evidence for a sustained increase in extracellular ATP levels in different pathological conditions, prompting ATP as a danger signal in the brain(Front. Neurosci.9:148). Accordingly, we now measured a sustained increase of the evoked release of ATP from hippocampal nerve terminals of Sprague-Dawley rats subjected to Status Epilepticus(SE) induced by pilocarpineinjection. Concomitantly, we found in developing rat hippocampal neurons that the pharmacological activation of adenosine A receptors(ARs) with the selective agonist CGS21680(30 n m) induces the formation of abnormal secondary axons. This prompted us to propose that this abnormal sprouting is due to an abnormal reactivation of the developmental-related AR-driven axon formation and outgrowth. We have now found in hippocampal organotypic slices that the spontaneous mF sprouting was attenuated by the pharmacological blockade of ARs, since the current densities(p A/p F) recorded were significantly lower in the slices cultured in the presence of the selective AR antagonist SCH58261(100 n m). more importantly, we found that the animals subjected to a long-term systemic treatment with SCH58261(0.1 mg/kg, i.p.), beginning 10 hours after pilocarpine-induced SE in rats, displayed significantly less hippocampal mF sprouting. Dyslipidemia may influence enzymes and transfer proteins needed to the lipoprotein particle remodeling. Calculated indices and evaluation of lipoprotein particle size have widely been used to predict cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate HDL particle size and LDL particle size estimate based on TG/HDL-C as well as apoB/apoA-I ratio as possible marker and atherogenic indices, respectively, of cardiovascular disease risk in the presence of dyslipidemia. We evaluated 100 individuals of both gender, without treatment with lipid-lowering drugs, 27 normolipidemic and 73 dyslipidemic, such as isolated hypercholesterolemia (n = 16), isolated hypertriglyceridemia (n = 17), low HDL-C (n = 26) and mixed dyslipidemia (n = 14). The HDL particle size did not differ between groups. The TG/HDL-C ratio was higher in groups with isolated hypertriglyceridemia (4.2 ± 1.5), low HDL-C (5.2 ± 3.1) and mixed dyslipidemia (5.3 ± 1.6). The apoB/apoA-I ratio was increased in all groups of dyslipidemia (apoB/apoA-I > 0.5) when compared to normolipidemic (apoB/apoA-I = 0.5, p man). The results suggest that the evaluations of lipoproteins particles remodeling markers and the use of calculated indices may contribute to the evaluation of cardiovascular disease risk when dyslipidemia take place.

柯萨奇Ｂ３非亲心肌株病毒（ＣＶＢ３ｏ）是否引起心肌炎还缺乏直接的实验依据。我们采用柯萨奇Ｂ３亲心肌株（ＣＶＢ３ｍ）和ＣＶＢ３ｏ感染鼠培养心肌细胞，对两株病毒感染细胞的特性进行了比较，结果表明，ＣＶＢ３ｏ与ＣＶＢ３ｍ在乳鼠心肌细胞培养液中的滴度，１２小时和２４小时无明显差别，４８小时后ＣＶＢ３ｍ的滴度变化不大，而ＣＶＢ３ｏ有所下降；两株病毒均能使鼠心肌细胞死亡，但随着时间的延长ＣＶＢ３ｍ感染后心肌细胞死亡率明显高于ＣＶＢ３ｏ；ＣＶＢ３ｏ不能阻断ＣＶＢ３ｍ对心肌细胞的感染。因此我们认为，ＣＶＢ３ｏ能感染心肌细胞，但其程度低于ＣＶＢ３ｍ。
